omfg, i just read all the 15 pages..

i just acquired my 1st gundam model yesterday. normal grade 1/144 Force Impulse. it was just for the fun of it, but when i started building it, i could already see myself getting HG's and MG's soon..

anyways, right now the colors are really bland, so i intend to do some painting n finishing. can any sifus help me here? i have no experience in all these stuff before. wat do i need and where can i find tutorials to help me with it?

oh and another thing, where can i find Gundam models in Penang or Malacca for a good price? i got my 1/144 normal grade for rm26, and i dont know the real price for it. can someone tell me how much shud i be paying for grades and sizes?

thank you in advance:) its nice to be part of this community.haha.

I prefer the Justice though. The Aegis is too "pointy" for my liking. tongue.gif
*
true true..but i like the pointiness.rofl! plus all the transformation stages.

on the other hand, it seems like justice's colors looks more lively than aegis.

No choice lah....since he is not the lead actor, then no PG/MG for him lor..... blush.gif

in seed he was main actor also ma...like co-main actor. rclxms.gif
im looking forward to IJ! but the unpainted one from the earlier posts looks WAYYY better than the 1/100 just now.

i got a question:

Where can i refer to for gundam modelling tips n guides? im really noob at it, and i almost ruined my force impulse. so is there any website that i can go to?

There's a chinese book that shows you how to make a model step by step and if I'm not mistaken all the demo is demostrated by Max Watanabe. I can't remember the name but I got the book, try to tell you by tomorrow.
*
oh thx man. but dont bother la, i cant read chinese. if theres a website or book in english then ok. thx again:)

haha, then i guess Blitz cant be wrong. Its black, its unique and has got cool weapons. The problem is the pilot's a faggot.

ah anyway, i think Blitz it is then.

I think it is bcoz of the transformation that makes it look bulky or rather retarded as u mentioned it. Saw Blitz in shopping complex recently, i think it looks cool, at least dun really looks disproportion... smile.gif
*
yeah. i find the parts on the aegis like..kinda jutting out. maybe its just for the sake of the transformation, thats why they paid little attention to the proportions.

QUOTE(infested_ysy @ Apr 6 2006, 05:02 PM)
Cautious in buying plastic crap != asking others to decide what model kit YOU should buy, despite the fact that most of the time, people buy model kits because they love the design/color scheme, and they'll tell you to buy a kit that they like, not a kit that you like. If you were to ask me which 1/144 HG SEED kit to buy, I'd recommend Strike Rouge +IWSP because the IWSP pack itself kicked so much ass (main focus on physical weaponry FTW!), although I would end up telling you to diss the 1/144 SEED line, and buy the much superior HGUC 1/144 Hazel or Advanced Hazel instead.,

Blast Impulse has a superior color scheme. I always adored Gundam units with forest-like-green camouflage colors, in addition to having a SURPRISE BUTTSECKS! hidden weapon. And profits? Bandai's a weird company, you know. If they only churn out model kits or toys if it's popular, we'd see the whole market being bombarded with 329487675 Destiny figurines/model kits already, as opposed to 329452376 Strike Freedom crap. The 1/100 Destiny was wildly popular among fans and outsold all of its other GSD kits when it first came out. But yet, Bandai still continues to churn out more and more SF crap. Bandai would've made an Astray Gold Frame Amatu already if they wanted to profit. Oh, and did I mention how bad the sales for GSD kits are, that at some point various Japanese shops are throwing the price out of the window just to make it sell?

And you fail. Yzak and Dearkka used Zaku Phantom. Zaku != Zaku Phantom.
*
w00t! ure a genius man! how come i couldnt find the Strike Rogue + IWSP on HLJ? lol, anyway ive seen it, and i think its so damn hot! blitz can wait for now..

so instead of 1/100 aegis, its gonna be 1/100 blue frame astray 2nd L. and for the blitz, im taking Strike Rogue IWSP instead.

EDIT: WTF?! on HLJ it says that Strike Rogue IWSP has been discontinued. so do u think young_soul can find it?

I'm guessing discontinued only means they stopped production. My friend wanted a Wing Gundam Endless Waltz Custom MG...HLJ.com discontinued, but I still found them at the shops. So, like I said...you cannot use these sites other than to browse for what's in the market. Use it like a catalogue, don't see any other detail except maybe the size, weight, and release date.

okay, then its good news!

hopefully u'll be able to find the Strike Rogue + IWSP!!! ganbatte bro!

You're doing it wrong hurr. You're supposed to use acrylic/enamel paints, along with a primer if you want to apply lighter color on dark surfaces. Apply light colored primer on the dark surface, wait for it to dry, then apply paint.
*
huh? acrylic n enamels..wat are those? are the gundam markers either of em?

its my first time leh. i just went there n said "need stuff to paint n do finishing on gundam kit" then he said use the marker. so i bought the 6pack one with grey panel liner.

wats primer? where can i get it and how much is it? sorry yea, all this sounds like gibberish to me~~ lol at tha noobness...

thx infested:) n i saw that thing in ur avatar in LYP..in some dumb shop selling overpriced kits.

Acrylic and Enamel is the type of paints like there are water based paint and oil based paint when you go to hardware store/paint shop. biggrin.gif

Primer is basically the base coat modellers put on the assembled model. Its benefit being it will highlight any imperfection - i.e. improperly done seam fix - and also acting as the good base for the paint to grab on and gives you the even base to paint... Tamiya makes a can spray though it can be expensive - heck all primer is expensive considering the amount one need to paint per model. sad.gif You can get the bottle type but that's really for the air brushing so I'd say if you can find Tamiya's can spray would be the ideal/only choice.

for panel lining there are half million ways - ok. maybe not that many biggrin.gif - to paint.
Gundam marker is alright though many people use the rotering pen for that since you can get the finer tip...
If you are interested check out Military modellers and see what they do.
They often use what they call washing - not recommended for Gundam models unless you are going to use for diorama with heavy weathering... Try Goggle as there are again half million or more web pages on these subject on the vast sea of Internet
*
thx for the explanation but i still got some questions..

ive seen those can sprays. so first i gotta spray it on (with masking tape right?) and then paint it with acrylic or enamel? then where does the gundam markers come in?

okay, ive managed to paint my kit with ONLY gundam markers. before this i mentioned that i cant apply light colors to dark ones; but later it was okay already cos i think the marker was still new, so it needed some 'warming-up'. the only problem is, painting with gundam markers are not very nice..cos the surfaces dont look smooth.

as for panel lining, im quite happy with the job done by the fine tip gundam marker.

and googling..sigh, i got bad results. can u guys direct me to any site with good info on modelling?

sry, mini bump for my question.

-what did u mean by spraying the primer on the whole surface? its like this; lets say i wanna paint a certain section of a white part blue. i assume primers come in different colors, so does that mean i have to spray the whole part white or just the section (blue)?

-is it possible to just have primer alone? and how many layers of primer do we normally apply?

-and for the paints, i still have no idea wat are enamel and acrylic paints; does the Gundam Marker fall under any of those two?

so now that i have the gundam markers, wat else do i need to start a proper painting?

sorry im kinda new in this modelling stuff. thx a lot for ur help rclxms.gif

primer comes in either grey or white if you want the white base coat...
one of main use of primer is to find out any imperfection before you start to paint and also gives the nice even base for the paint to grab on.

if using white primer well you could leave it at that followed with decal, lining, top coat, etc...

enamel and acrylic is just different types of paint. if you like think of permanant marker and white board marker. tongue.gif it really depens on the availability as for me getting Acrylic paint is far easier

I really don't recommand the gundam marker unless you want to do is pre-assembly with lining O_O
*
err..isnt it those tamiya ones? cos i saw the tamiya cans at jusco..they come in a lot of colors.

how abt those parts that dont need painting? do we still need to prime it?

as for the gundam markers, why is it better to use acrylic/enamel than the markers? sorry ya, still blur smile.gif

thx

Why ToyCity...? O_o

Aren't the stuff they sell overpriced? At least, the Melaka branch does it. I can hardly imagine them making a profit otherwise (given how skyhigh their expenses should be, what with renting two HUEG lots in Parkson, and hiring like, 2 dozen of employees? O_O)
*
ooO..infested u from malacca too? im studyin in mmu. so i guess that makes u the best person to ask for sources for modelling stuff rclxms.gif

QUOTE(dj898 @ Apr 13 2006, 08:50 AM)
Yes Tamiya makes nice selection of Acrylic paints though I prefer Gunze as they have more wide range - so I don't have to mix paints tongue.gif
I do use Tamiya spray can when I see one for cheap but it's mainly for paint the diorama base or something I just need the basic cover up.  Other than that I don't use coz it's quite costly

for smaller parts don't need painting? Don't know which parts don't need painting with MG kits coz I only use MG and PG kits myself. Never do 1/144 scale nor HG kits

I use the paint brush for the small piece since it's not easy to use air brush and masking can be a hell with small pieces.  It's easier to hand paint 'em

well IMHO Gundam marker could be alright for smaller scale kits and even that at smaller areas unless you have the skill to cover large areas with Gundam marker and not have the stroke(?) marks - well I don't.  Using air brush will give you the nice even finish though properly prepared/thin'd enamel/lacquer could achieve nice finish with hand paint provided you have steady hands and patience doh.gif
*
which one is cheaper, tamiya or gunze? this is for the primer right? how abt the acrylic paints? normally how much do u pay for a can/bottle/watever ?

for the parts that dont need painting, i meant that the part is those that comes molded in the right color already. for example, freedom, do u paint its white parts too? (since u tear it off from the trees its already white)

oh, so the reason u guys dont use gundam markers is cos of the stroke marks? yeah i noticed that when i painted mine..i was wonderin how to get rid of those marks. so i guess the best solution is acrylic paint huh?

hmm, looks like i gtg toycity and find those stuff. anyone knows where i can get these cheap in malacca?

I'd say Gunze. I remember a hobby shop somewhere in Ipoh (I forgot where, it's in a building where a whole floor is dedicated to shops that sells animu crap/gaming crap/pirated CD/model kit crap) selling those tiny Gunze paints (small, rectangular, long container) for around RM6 or so.

For painting parts with paints of the same color, it's entirely on your personal taste. Some just leave it as so, some elitist paint everything over to reduce the plasticky look of it.

Stroke marks? What kind of marker you're using? Felt tip? Coloring the surface over a few times more after the initial coat's dried can reduce the stroke marks (at least that's what I did when painting my 1/100 HG Heavyarms Custom-EW)

NO. Toycity (at least the one in Melaka) is made of lose and fail. Don't ever go there unless you're a rich ******* with loads of cash to burn. There's no model kit shop here that sells model supplies cheaply (or at all). So far I've only seen them selling Tamiya's acrylic paints, going at RM14~18 a pop, and a Tamiya acrylic thinner (say, around 1litre worth of it?)for RM35... O_O
*
6bucks is kinda cheap compared to gundam markers. but thats ipoh. hmm hard luck malacca doesnt have those stuff. recently my friend bought a 1/100 HG from a shop in gajah berang..he says its 100bux after haggling. thats quite cheap right? im not sure if that shop sells supplies or not..

the gundam markers that i have are the standard 6pack ones. well, coloring on top of a dried coat seems like a good idea, but sometimes i find that when i paint it, the bottom coat comes off..leaving a really nasty smudge. anyways, how many coats do u apply with a gundam marker?

omg, painting eq's arent cheap..just thinner alone 35 bux. crap thats damn expensive.

QUOTE(dj898 @ Apr 13 2006, 01:29 PM)
primer is kind of paint with small particles inside - it serves dual purpose as I explained before. You can get primer from other makers but it seems Tamiya and Gunze are the two most popular - Tamiya has a small pray can that can be found cheap depends on shops and sales day whereas Gunze has the primer in bottle so you can use w/ air brush

if you don't want to paint, say the white area you can leave it out though in my case after done fixing seam line and sanding I need to prime/paint anyway

if you don't fix seam line and just snap assemble you can put the flat top coat to kill that plastic sheen which makes the kit like toy

Gundam marker can be useful especially for panel lining though you can use the Routering(?) pen as substitute and it can be found cheaper
*
ah so primers are important if im gonna paint with acrylic or enamel. but i guess my painting plans are gonna be put on hold, since malacca doesnt have any modelling supplies shop. crap, shud have gotten those at xl-shop when i went there..haha.

oh, i remember a post abt the top coat spray. that spray will kill the glossy plastic look right?

and the pen. its Rotring. my dad has those. its really fine tips, and he uses that for his engineering drawings. LOL, accuracy huh.

By right, 1/100 HG kits have a retail price of 2000yen, which translates to RM66. Which shop did your friend bought it from? There's two (not counting the third one selling Bendi crap) shops selling model kits at jalan Gajah Berang.

So it's felt tip then?

You're supposed to leave the paints dry (aka 'curing process') for a looooonnnngggg time before applying the second coat. Some even leave the painted parts over a day before applying the second coat.

Hurr I don't apply paints with Gundammu marker. I just black panel line'd them. Or outline the edges with the black panel line pen, before painting it with black acrylic for surfaces that are supposed to be black.
*
well, most of the time i see 1/100 HG's at 150+.. at jusco the freedom was 249.90 i think. during the anime event at my uni a few weeks ago, they were selling 1/144 HG's at 89.90. expensive compared to young_souls prices. must be all that importing costs and bloodsucking.

err, that shop. im not sure. i think he said Anime Tech. or was it teencom. anyways, the same shop is havin a promo at my uni concourse this week. i saw iDolls for Lacus and Lunamaria. but no kits though. however the Loli's (?) are pretty nice.

ah, the pen must be felt tip. im not sure though, cos ive always thought that felt tips are spongy or ink absorbing stuff (think Artline). this one is like hard plastic.

well, i left mine for a day, but still it happens. its like the new coat is dilluting the bottom one.

oh so wat acrylic paints do u use the? given the poor availabilty of supplies in malacca sweat.gif ... and where did u get em?

Teen@Com is the name of the shop having a booth promo thing in MMU's animu wap event thingy.

Ah yes, the pen. I think either there's some problems with the batch, with the retarder being ineffective in the markers (I got it from Teen@Com too, the emerald green marker) or they're meant to be made of lose and suck. I'm frustrated of all the stupid careful reverse pumping required before using it everytime. I eventually opened the pen and just drew ink to my 000 brush and paint the visors of my Wild Falken.

Maybe you should also do the same thing as I did? I applied 3 layers of the ink on the Wurger's eyes. Have no problems with new coat cancelling previous coat (PROTIP: paint it quickly, I find the ink dries up rather quickly... perhaps a case of old, old markers with retarder not working efficiently anymoar?)

I use Tamiya's acrylic paints. Basic colors (yellow, white, black, red, blue) Got them from Jusco's.
*
yeah teen@com. must be that shop. been there? i think 100bux per 1/100 kit is quite a good price.

i faced problems with my pen too! its like after a few strokes it will stop inking and i gotta scribble over paper to get the ink running again. irritating yaknow.. but good idea with drawing out the ink. too bad i got no brush. will Nylon paintbrushes do?

well, theres no doubt the ink will dry fast. its from the same pen after all. though this could be an annoying problem..hmm. do u mix it with thinner? and doesnt ur brush get sticky and hard when the ink dries up?

oritey. thx for info. i shall go to juscos to look for em. the last time i was there i only saw spray cans. are urs the can or bottled ones?
