US is big country. Give us a pair of city at least. From New York to Los Angeles for example, can cost between US$250 - US$750.

Hi forumers,

I'm planning to go for a trip to NY maybe within the next year, around spring time. What is the estimated cost for flight/hotel/expenditure? I don't want any tours as I'm planning for a free and easy trip. Let's say I go for two weeks. How much in RM do I need?

Flight: RM4,000 return...
Hotel: RM200 per night (RM2,800) more like a small private one person room at a hostel...common bath...
Food: RM70 a day (RM980) two meals a day at McD or Burger King.
Subway Pass: RM70 for 7days. (RM140)

Total around RM8,000 for necessities....You should probably aim to have around RM16,000 - RM20,000.

You can also couchsurf or eat p.b and jelly everyday...biggrin.gif

P.S: You need to have and purchased all your arrangements before applying for Visa...you might get rejected even after paid for everything...So take note of cancellation policy....

Lots of info on the web eg. kayak or bing travel. Go do your own legwork. steven13's estimate seem to be on the low side IMO.

Not true. My friend who went to apply for a US visa, did not book anything prior to that. He got his visa btw.

I'm not sure if there is this info or not, and if not mistaken, i think the website (for applying US visa) got mention that not necessary have to buy the air ticket etc first.

I'm planning to go new york with my friends in early October, but still haven't book anything and have no idea how to start
by the way, will there be enough time to process our VISA and all? or enough time to do ANYTHING?
and another thing, about 6 days there including flight... roughly how much should the budget be..just to really see everything there!

Since you go so far, might as well go for 10days?

You should get your b1 visa first before getting any air tickets. It's not easy to get American tourist visa.

return ticket should be around rm3.5k-rm5k

Depending on whether you wanna backpack or stay in a hotel. rm10k per person?

Just to add, getting a B1/B2 visa doesn't necessarily mean you will be allowed into the US either. But don't let this scare you, get the visa, if everything goes ok you'll get a 10-year visa which you can use for further trips into the US.

But I do agree with ethanps3, why spend 6 days when you're going to spend RM10k or more per person. Jet lag alone will already kill evenings for at least 1-2 nights. Go for 10 days and enjoy the city. Buy a Lonely Planet or something book and read it up. Again if you're spending money already, RM70 for a book is nothing biggrin.gif

dealnews.com for online shopping, Woodbury Common for outlet shopping. Yelp for food. craigslist, Google Offer, groupon for possible bargains. Ebay for prepaid SIM cards (have them ship to Malaysia). zipcar if you feel the need to rent a car (although Hertz hourly is probably ok and a bit cheaper). The Ranch or Great Adventure if you need that adrenaline rush.

i suggest stay in hostel because hotel are expensive. Don't rent car. you will spend a lot of money and time finding parking and paying for it. Best to use their subway station or taxi. 10 days like everyone say is best. By the time you fly there including transit already 20hrs.

Google it up and read the rankings. I'd trust a few hundred people ranking the hostels than 2-3 people on LYN to be honest biggrin.gif I've personally stayed at the Vanderbilt Y but there are others.

Good luck getting anything cheap though, mid August is peak season and most hostels and hotels are booked already.

just look it up on hostelworld.com or hostelbookers.com. rate should be around 35 usd and above per night, depending on location and the type of room. 35 is usually for dorm bed with free breakfast and wifi. i stayed at the ny loft, brooklyn. beautiful hostel and pretty close to the subway station. make sure that u stay near a subway station. saves a lot of time.

I'm gambling that the storm will be over by then.

Anybody been to NY?
Is following a tour or solo travelling better?

Was in NYC this time last month (pre Sandy). Poor New Yorkers when I saw the devastating impact from Sandy, I know where they're referring to. Even now, Lower Manhattan is without power with subway still flooded. Was with a family of four and spent 8 nights in NYC. In between we took a bus tour to Niagara Falls / Toronto and the falls was the highlight of our tour. Worth going to the falls by itself.

8 nights for us is more than enough, perhaps 7 nights would be just nice. Do all the tourist stuff like Staten Island ferry to see Statue of Liberty, Ground zero, central park, museum of natural history, Inteprid aircraft carrier museum, wall street, 5th avenue shopping, highline walk, Rockefeller's Top of the Rock observation point, Chinatown, Flushing, Empire State Building, Macy's shopping, premium outlet shopping at Woodbury etc. As a result of Sandy, some of the attractions are still close like ground zero, Inteprid as i believed ground zero is flooded.

Subway is the best way to travel. Do not underestimated this vast city. We read the map and walked for 3 hours (with stopping in between) to Highline attraction!

Accommodation is super expensive in NYC but makan is affordable.

Yes, like I mentioned, Niagara Falls was the highlight of our US tour. However, the must do thing was to take the 'Maid of the mist' boat ride underneath the fall to feel the fury of the falls will not be operating during winter.
