Hi, I'm seriously considering removing all tiles of my new house and changing it to marble flooring. My budget is depending on value. Generally Ipoh marble is okay coz my wife and I are both from there.

Can anyone attest to the quality of local Ipoh marble? I find paying steep price for imported marble is purely asthetics if not snobbery.

Most importantly, the construction of marble flooring, is it laid before or after it has been water proofed?
How is it waterproofed and with what material? How is it sealed afterwards? With what sealant and how long does it last?

Could someone shed some light here.? I'm trying to save some future headache here. Thank you

if you are talking about 'ipoh white marble', i advise against using it on the floor as it is not as dense and is more prone to chips & cracks. this marble is more suitably used for furniture tops, shelving and wall cladding.

waterproofing of floor slab and wall are to be done before laying marble. usually cementitious would be used for ground floor. if it is for a wet room on second floor, a bathroom/toilet for example, torched on membrane would be much safer.

for 'waterproofing' of the marble on floor, it should be done on every piece prior to its installation with impregnator, whereas for wall installation, it could be done after installation only on the exposed surface to save cost. impregnator usually last for >5years for residential usage

thanks
Funny. I have just been told by an installer that Ipoh marbles are denser , less veins and thus less porous. What is the layman term used by contractors for impregnator?

Can anyone confirm that Ipoh marbles are actually inferior to imported ones? I made a few inquiries but nobody can confirm it for sure
