does anyone here has TMJ?

i've been having TMJ for almost 5 years now
everytime i google, most of the people replied saying that they suffer big amounts of pain just by opening their mouth to eat
in just about 2 years of having this disorder..

but im currently at my 5th year.. still no pain, but my jaw just gets a little sore now (can feel it)

anyway. TMJ's symptoms are cracking of the jaw bones.. like cracking your knuckles with the "pop" sound..
sometimes it can be very loud, sometimes just sounds normal..
but the sensation is there, it makes you want to crack it.

i've been to the dentist, but he says he dont see any misalignment in my jaw.

pls help/advise!

Hello mafioso, it is actually called TMD. Normally ppl have clicking sound during opening and closing.but it does not produce any pain. Normally if it is not severe, we can do a simply exercise. If does not help, we may need to construct a night guard cuz bruxism which is a teeth grinding during sleep may cause or exaggerate it. It may due to other causes as well. If it is pain, I advise you to go see TMD specialist.

TMJ is temporomandibulat joint which just means ur joint. TMD is temporomandibular disorder which is covered a huge topic. Well, prevention is better than cure. Some ppl may not develop pain because the condyle which is the joint bone will remodel well. Some may develop pain. Normally ppl will not seek treatment until there is a pain. The cause may due to bruxism, stress, muscle pain which tense the joint. I'm actually a dental student. My knowledge may limited.i hope it helps. So prevention is better than cure.

for the past few years i've been checking on google..
they gave a couple of way to try to "make" them go away..

its by:

1. massaging the affect jaw area
2. sleep early

i've been doing this 2 for almost 6 months (back then)

but still no results.

its weird because it happened out of nowhere 5 years ago and its been popping till today.

Hi TS, how is your condition now?
I started to notice cracking sound on the left side when chewing about half year ago.
My condition is getting worse recently. After I extracted my lower right wisdom teeth, the cracking sound get louder and now it turn out to cause ear pain.
Why I'm having such problem?

been having TMJ since 15..
already 6 years with this.

last year around second half of 2012, i had really serious pain issues when i open my mouth. but after awhile it was gone.. until today (so far).
but i guess it'll come back again if it "pops" too much?

sometimes if i opened too fast or too "extreme", it really locks and when i close it, its REALLY painful.. its like the jaw isnt aligned at all and i have to stop all mouth related activities for about 5-10 minutes :S.

how often do you have the pop? and is it painful? or it feels like cracking your knuckles?

mine isnt painful at all. only second half of 2012 i had pain. after that no.

It is very misleading keep on saying like TMJ is an disorder. it is a normal joint.

without TMJ, human cannot even open your mouth to bite or chew. TMJ is just a freaking joint. your condition is TMD aka temporomandibular disorder

anyway, is it a serious issue? as there isnt any serious pain. just that it pops every now and then.

Almost every time I chew, there will be pop. The pop is not painful. But I'm having ear pain when swallowing.

You know what we mean is TMD.
Even practicing doctors also need to know about layman's terms.

once in awhile i do get ear pains.
sometimes i massage the part where the joint connects to ease down the pain (when i have it)

have you googled on why it happens?
they say its due to teeth grinding when sleep / stress.
i might be both

some ppl even wrote that they have it for more than 20 years and still living a healthy life so far.

but its weird that its already 6 years now and it felt like nothing's serious..
i just hope one day my right side jaw wont disconnect due to this. lolz.

that's like saying "doc, i have a knee!" and expecting him to know that u have arthritis.

or saying "i have a head!" and expecting the doc to know that u have headache.

TMJ is just a joint. no we dont know if u have TMJ dislocation, or pain, or swelling, etc, if u just say TMJ. if really wanna use layman term, can just say ur jaw clicks when u open and close mouth, then we can understand u have TMD.

anyway, nothing serious TS. if u notice, the click only happens if u open ur jaw too wide. and if u open ur jaw a bit deviated to the left or right (like how a camel chew food), the click reduces or disappear. dont let it click too much if possible, and it will be reduced as time goes by.

i used to have TMD too, so bad that one day the ligament just locks and i cant even open my mouth. it gets worse when u keep inducing the clicking urself (e.g. play around with ur jaw, open n close even when not eating), the ligament swells up, causing the pain to become worse and the click also.
