Hi!

Was wondering, in the event of a total loss. Is it possible to keep the old number plate? Would I need to purchase a new car immediately to keep the number plate? Or can I wait a couple of months?

What's the procedure like? Any idea?

Thanks!

If u purchase new car, just ask the dealer to kao tim everything for u. Without extra charges.
I think u might probably need to wait until Insurance company clear everything 1st.

If u want to do it, it probably costs about RM500-1K

Thanks!

So does tht mean tht if I wanted to hang on to the number plate I'll have to fork out about RM500-1k?

Is it possible to hold off on a new car for a couple of months after insurance claim is sorted?

The correct procedure would be to wait for the car to certified as total lost by insurance company.
By then, you will need send the vehicle to the nearest Puspakom inspection centre for plate number transferring inspection.
You will need to register a new car number plate for the total lost vehicle, and transfer out the old number.

Usually in this case, you must transfer the old number plate to a new vehicle within a month time frame. Falling to do so, u might lose the number forever, go JPJ and appeal for extension? You can try that.

If u thinking to hold the number for several months, transfer it to a motorcycle.

The expenses to tow the car to Puspakom for inspection, a new number for the wreck and all sort of fee, shall be bear by your side.
