Okay, I'm just a normal user with 3 pcs in the household. I do use bittorrent. Probably one is gonna switch to wifi. What's so good about DDWRT compared to the original firmware?

My situation? I got an unused WRT54G v5 (was cheated by a d**khead shop in Sunway Pyramid saying its a v4.Turns out they don't have a v4 after waiting 2 weeks) and I have the option to upgrade to WRT54GS and probably install DD-WRT by doing so. Should I go GS, or stick with this v5 crap?

Go with GS and please make sure your GS is not V5 too....and its V4 (you could only use the mini , but I think that will be fine)

If you use BitTorrent then QoS plays an important role here. So its better for you , to dump the V5 (which has many problems) and go with GS Instead

Thanks, is there a V5 GS too?

Ok thanks for advice, just got myself the WRT54GS v4. Haven't got the guts to update the firmware to DD-WRT yet. Is it possible to backup the original Linksys firmware?

Anyone got a better link for dd-wrt.v32_mini_wrt54gsV4.bin? I keep disconnecting before I finish my download.

Ok, I'm freaking out, I've flashed my WRT54GS v4 with the mini bin file. Everything went well, but now I can't access the router. Its by default at 192.168.1.1 right? I tried putting the name as root and pwd as admin, but it doesnt work. Why?

Damn, I'm gonna regret doing this. I've followed the procedure, and now 192.168.1.1 just brings a blank white screen. And right when I needed to do work. Sigh.

try opening cmd and ping 192.168.1.1, if it is showing TTL=100, then u r in Boot Wait (NO GUI MODE), go download the mini generic and flash it via tftp... it should work...

did u reset b4 upgrading ur firmware? u MUST reset b4 doin upgradin... try to reflash the mini or linksys original firmware via tftp again and c...

Thanks for that, got it working. However, I think DD-WRT disconnects more frequent than my Linksys firmware. And my utorrent is running slower. Weird.

Anyone know how to check whether the router's faulty or not?

Torrent running slower ? Have you change the max number of ports under the Adminstration section in your configuration page ? Try changing that to 4096 and the TCP and UDP timeouts to 120.

Yep its back to normal now, but still disconnects frequency, keep changing ip. Do you have any idea how to check if the router is faulty?
