QUOTE(kenchew @ Nov 22 2012, 10:11 AM)
Need some advice from the sifus here.

Is it possible to use the Nexus Media Importer application + OTG Cable to play videos on my Nexus 7 from my USB-powered External Hard Disk drive? Have yet to download the app as it is a paid app (and do not want to root).

If possible, will it cause any "damage" to my Nexus 7 since it is drawing power from my Nexus 7.

If this method is not feasible, any other methods to recommend playing videos from my USB-Powered HDD? All my series and videos are in there (can't fit into pendrive) and will be away for a looonnnggg trip.

Thanks in advance for all your advice.
*
YES you can use Nexus Media importer to directly play movies from your USB drive > use the STREAM function at menu and you will be given a choice of video players to use

USB OTG - depend on what type you buy ( so many types ranging from RM 5 to RM 20). I have a Samsung 1 TB USB Harddrive and only one out of my 3 USB OTG cable can detect the harddrive easily without any problems. The other 2 units just failed to detect
I recommended my unit to one of the forumer here but he told me it cannot be used at all on his 1TB drive ( other brand). So getting a right USB OTG cable is another hit n miss affair. Detecting up to 64 GB thumb drives is not an issue at all

I'd think is not advisable to use such methods playing movie continuously directly from the hard drive as battery draining could be a big issue. Anyway is your choice. A better way is to copy the movie you want over using Nexus Media Importer and delete movie after watching and recopy again another movie you wish to watch

It is just a piece of certificate . You can use one copy to bring in up to 3 units at same time
The certificate will state type of phone/tablets you wish to import in

What I have said is import in through courier service
Personal handcarry rarely you need to declared n most if time custom don't bother if only one unit
If kena custom hold than he need to go to sirim n apply permit to clear it. Tablet will be hold in customs
Tell him be smart bring in the tablet n box open n packaging all opened to show is used personal set

Thanks for the info.  Already PM them earlier thru FB and got the reply.  They are temporary suspended the order until Nov 28 due to ongoing promotion.  Furthermore, 32GB Nexus 7 is out of stock anyway.  New stock coming in 2 weeks time.  Total price quoted is RM820.90 including shipping charge to JB.  thumbup.gif  Price difference with Note 10.1 is too much to ignore.  biggrin.gif

Actually very cheap n no inconvenience
I pay rm1000+ ( all in) buying direct from USA. Have to go to sirim jb in technology park pay rm100 for sirim n back to jln bakti custom to show them sirim permit n pay another rm100+ for tax ( on invoice value plus courier)
Did not even count in my time cost plus petrol cost going to JB

nope, dun have the chance yet, only watched the video reviews but most of the review says the screen is good, no?  tongue.gif  But still considering whether should get the Nexus 10 instead if the price is as good as N7 32GB.  I mean based on the current Newegg Malaysia formula of US Price x 3.1 + RM50 shipping.  Anyone know how much is N10 32GB?  I only can see 16GB N10 selling for $399.  32GB $449?  hmm.gif

Edit: Just google, the 32GB is $499.  Double the price of 32GB N7 $249.  doh.gif   For $499, i would rather buy Note 10.1.

The lift screen is a known major issue?  Can RMA it with local Asus service centre?
*
My personal opinion, the N7 has the WORST display in all the androids phones/tablets i have used. Only text looks good as its colors are generally paler and some times look washed out. You wont be admiring it much viewing videos, photos etc.
N7 has international warranty. I send my unit in to Skudai center to replace motherboard ( dont know how it got fried while flashing a different rom ). Was told warranty covered even though i have unlock bootloader and root/flash with custom rom. The technician subsequently screwed it replacing the motherboard and offer me a new unit as replacement. NO need even to show proof of purchase - they just key in serial number and is inside Msian system though my set was directly purchased from Google USA

Can RMA they say,but I don't know how do they consider as lift screen.Mine has creaking sound,I call it as lift screen, because the sound is caused by the lift surface.
*
Why hesitate - send in to repair. Or do it yourself. A few users here has open the backcover and adjust the screws themselves and immediately rectified it
My ex 16 Gb and 16GB replacement unit and present 32GB unit has no such lift problems

I am using the guide below to root 4.2. I faced 2 issues with the guide below.
When I reached step 7, how come I get another prompt saying something like "...ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix?". I am using this image (recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.9-grouper.img).

What do you guys do when you get this prompt?
My other problem is at the 3rd paragrah below when I select "Recovery Mode" and always getting the 'Android' bot belly up with a red exclamation mark when I followed the steps below, any idea why?
Anyone can share?

Edit: Change code to quote.

When you reach step 7 , just select NO or go back will do fine

And why follow such a complicate and long winded guide
Just use the NExus 7 toolkit - you will be guided fully or use Wugfresh
This guy who writes the post is only confusing a lot ogf new users
Use the N7 toolkit and you need not even need any written guide

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195

I just follow this guide to root/and have CWM installed on the latest ver 4.2 though his guide is not updated yet to have it working on ver 4.2. It still works very well

And I highly recommend you guys use TWRP as recovery as it allows nandroid backup to , say external USB thumb drives. Restoring has always been perfect for me so far. You will appreciate the space savings ( up to 2 GB per rom backup) especially if yours is a 16 GB unit

It has NEVER fail me as recognition of the USB thumb drive is outside the android OS and should never be any issue
Even on Note 2 now I have converted to use TWRP as recovery mode

For rm430 seriously how much you can save using others? Probably less than a hundred . Is it worth it using other 3rd party
Is considered cheap considering other tablets you are looking at rm600+ region

When will the Nexus 7 32GB with 3G be available in the local stores, and roughly how much will it cost?

And one more thing, why the sale price is higher than US retail price?
*
US retail price is lower as Google gets additional income from sales of its playstore books, music and movies
Google claims it is not making any profit selling the tablet, which is probably true

Thanks for the info.

Regarding original vs AP, what are your thoughts or opinions? I asked some retailers, not on the Nexus 7 but on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. According to one seller, the only difference is the AP set is covered for software failure only but not hardware failure. So if the hardware fails, the unit is good as dead. Even if it can be repaired, the cost of repair will be close to a brand new unit and it's not worth it to fix the thing.

As for the Asus international warranty, perhaps it is wise to check whether it is covered for everything ie. both software and hardware failure. Even if it is, I suppose the unit will need to be shipped to the Asus HQ(in Taiwan?) for repair. Will need to pay for courier fees, and getting an original unit may be a better choice. If nothing happens within the warranty period, then I would say the AP set is worth the money, but nobody can predict if the set will develop faults or not within the 1-2 years warranty period.

What do you think?
*
I have bought several Samsung phones/tablets ( AP ) from directd, satugadget.com and item.com and all are perfect till I sold it off. Never have need to claim warranty. I'd suggest for AP you buy from directd as they are more established and have own technician and service center. These sellers will honour all hardware failures. Standard warranty of AP sets range from 18 -24 months while display and accessories is usually 6 months. If you buy AP from any other 3rd party parttime resellers do not expect too much for warranty services. Their prices could be cheaper but seriously it is not worth it. The guy who told you hardware failures is not entertain is lying to you and obviously he is one of those many 3rd party unauthorised resellers

Nexus 7 is international warranty and you can submit in claims to any ASUS center in Msia ( see Asus websites for the various centers in Msia). Quite few users here has successfully claim warranty in KL Service center for sets bought from USA. My first 16GB ( bought directly from Google USA) I claim warranty for motherboard replacement and is FOC despite my tablet still boot up showing clockworkmod recovery and showing bootloader unlock. The technician in JB screw up replacing the motherboard and i got a free unit ( Msian unit) as replacement. And I do not even need to show prof of purchase. They just key in the tablet serial number and system verified is a genuine sales unit

OKay thanks for the info. So you are saying AP set for Nexus 7 is covered for everything, and warranty claim can be done at the local Asus service centres. If that's the case, will there be an "original" Nexus 7, since there won't be any difference between an AP and original set.

Don't have time to go through all the pages of this thread. I normally just go to the last page.

So for Samsung AP set is not recommended.

Cheers.

So far I know of only one retailer , Hotspot at Lowyat Plaza ( ground floor) that sells Nexus 7 sets as authorised reseller
Dont worry many users here in this thread has got their so called AP/foreign purchased sets and ASUS KL has honor the warranty. There was another user who also got a free replacement set. Most other users sent in to replace their speakers and repair screen display issues
