'A meeting in coarse cotton, sixpence for leather and laces. Factory hardened arms mix oil and mud. A century and a quarter forward, Gunners together; battles ahead. From those first heavy steps; Men will become gods.'

Arsenal Football Club was originally founded in 1886 by employees of the the Dial Square workshop at the Royal Arsenal, which was an armaments factory in South-East London, in a district named Woolwich. Consequently, they were first named āDial Squareā A Scotsman, David Danskin is the man said to have bought the first football for the club. Among the first players for the club was former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, Fred Beardsley who would be the one to obtain a set of red kits, the colour the Arsenal still wear today. The first match for the new club took place on December 11, 1886 in an open field in the Isle of Dogs (another London district) against a club known as the Eastern Wanderers in which the club won 6-0. What is interesting is that other than the date of this match, everything else written so far may possibly be a myth.
By Christmas however, they had changed the name of their club to Royal Arsenal. They originally played on Plumstead Common before moving to Manor Ground in 1888. Royal Arsenal would move away and then return to Manor Ground as Invicta Ground proved too costly for them. Playing in the amateur leagues proved fruitful for Royal Arsenal as they won a couple of trophies and largely outclassed the other amateur clubs from London. But it wasnāt all rosy for them as the professional clubs attempted to sign their players and they were subsequently banned for amateur football for being too professional, which relegated them to only playing friendlies and in the FA Cup. So 1893 in a bid to gain access into the Football League, Royal Arsenal changed their name to Woolwich Arsenal and became a limited liability company, and attempted to buy the Manor Ground. This ended up working and Woolwich Arsenal began life in the Second Division, where they would spend eleven years, generally finishing mid-table every year. Under the guidance of manager Harry Bradshaw, Woolwich Arsenal would gain promotion to the First Division, where they would lose their manager before the season started to Fulham. They would never come close to challenging for the League title due to financial concerns. Their playing grounds were on the South side of London where most clubs in the division were on the North side, and so to stay afloat they were forced into selling their top players, which resulted in smaller attendances for home matches. In 1910 Woolwich Arsenal went into voluntary liquidation as they were on the verge of bankruptcy when Sir Henry Norris, the chairman of Fulham FC, and other businessmen bought the club. Norris was well aware of the financial difficulties of the location of Woolwich Arsenal and so attempted to merge the club with Fulham, and when that failed, attempted to have them play on alternating Saturdays, which also failed. And so Norris focused on finding a new location for the club, eventually setting his sights on Highbury, in North London, which was met with opposition from the fans and the residents of Highbury. Norris forced it through and spent 125,000 pounds on a new Stadium (9.5 million in 2010 prices) Having been relegated back to the Second Division, Woolwich Arsenal would move to Highbury in 1913, and change their name from āWoolwich Arsenalā to āThe Arsenal. After four years of no competitive football due to World War 1, The Arsenal would gain promotion into the First Division in a dubious way. In the final season of football in 1914, Arsenal had finished in 6th place, but the First Division was expanding from 20 clubs to 22 and two clubs were to be given the extra two places in the division. Chelsea was given the one place, despite being relegated in the previous season. The other club that had been relegated was none other than Tottenham Hotspur, and they were in the running for the extra place along with Barnsley and Wolves, who had finished ahead of Arsenal. Despite all this, Norris argued that The Arsenal should obtain promotion due to their ālong service to league footballā and the League board agreed, voting 18-8 to promote The Arsenal. It was alleged that they only managed this promotion due to bribery by Norris with his good friend and chairman of Liverpool, John McKenna, and has fueled the long-standing intense rivalry with Tottenham every since. It has also been argued that Norris was aware of match fixing before the war by Liverpool and Manchester United and used it as a tool to be promoted. Whatever the case, The Arsenal gained entrance into the First Division in 1919 and have never left since, holding the record for the longest unbroken stretch of top-flight football.
After some very poor showing and narrowly avoiding relegation, Norris had enough of his manager Leslie Knighton and hired Herbert Chapman in 1925. Chapman would put his stamp on The Arsenal, changing the way the club did things. Chapman changed the training philosophy and physiotherapy regimes and added numbers to the players shirts, a practice that is now common-place across the footballing world. He also altered the kit, adding white sleeves in 1933, and insisted The Arsenal be known as just āArsenalā so they would be the first club in alphabetical order every time. He even managed to change the name of the nearby tube station from Gillespie Road to Arsenal, which now has a 52 metre mural to commemorate the teamās move from Highbury in 2006. Chapman also changed the way the game was played on the pitch with the new formation now called āWMā which can also be described as a 3-2-5 or a 3-2-2-3. It proved so successful that by the late 1930s, most clubs had adopted this formation In Hebert Chapmanās first season in charge, Arsenal made their best finish ever in the league by placing second, but the next few seasons had them stay mid-table. Norris allowed Chapman to spend large sums of money however, and nearly won their first ever trip to the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Cardiff City. Three years later, and after buying Arsenal greats Cliff Bastin, David Jack and Alex James, Arsenal made the FA Cup final once more, this time defeating Chapmanās old club Huddersfield Town 2-0 and earning the clubs first ever major trophy. They then won the League title for the first time in 1931, recording their best ever win against Grimsby Town, 9-1, which still stands. In 1932 Arsenal lost the FA Cup Final to Newcastle 2-1 after they had a goal that was wrongly awarded as a goal kick. The 1932-33 season would see Arsenal win their 2nd league title. In January 1934, Herbert Chapman would suddenly pass away from pneumonia, but that would not stop the winning ways as they would win the League again that season, as well as 1934-35 and 1937-38 and another FA Cup in 1936. Arsenal were such a strong club that in 1934, England had seven Arsenal players start a match and defeated the then, World Champions Italy 3-2, and is still a record for most players from a single club starting a match for England. On March 9, 1935 Arsenal saw itās largest ever attendance for a match versus Sunderland, counting 73,295 fans at Highbury. The Second World War would suspend all competitive football for the 1939-40 season, and Highbury was used as an ARP station (Air Raid Precautions), and had a bomb destroy the North Bank roof and setting fire to the terrace. With Highbury taken Arsenal played their home matches at White Hart Lane while football still continued, although the matches do not count in official statistics as star players would play as āguestsā for various clubs when not in the armed forces. The war claimed nine first team Arsenal players, the most of any club in the top flight. Arsenal were also afflicted with a heavy financial burden of repairing their war damaged stadium, and consequently struggled when regular club football began once again in 1946, finishing 13th. Tom Whittaker took over as manager and won the League title in the 1947-48 season. They would then win the FA Cup in 1949-50, a 2-0 win over Liverpool. After nearly winning the Double in the 51-52 season, but failing in both competitions, Arsenal won their 7th League title the following year in what was one
of the closest title races ever, narrowly beating Preston North End only on goal average. The title would ultimately prove to be Arsenalās last trophy for seventeen long years. Tom Whittaker would pass away in 1956, and Arsenal would try and fail with Jack Crayston, George Swindin and Billy Wright as managers, generally finishing mid-table, and having to endure Tottenham winning the double in 1961. On May 5, 1966 Highbury would see itās lowest ever attendance be recorded with 4,554 in the stands, and having only one player in Englandās 1966 World Cup winning squad, a far cry from the successful and prosperous times under Chapman and Whittaker. Wright, then the manager, was fired and the Arsenal board made the odd appointment of their club physiotherapist Bertie Mee to replace him. The appointment of Bertie Mee was so surprising that he himself requested to return to his old role if he proved unsuccessful after one year. Alongside assistant Dave Sexton, Mee promoted players from the youth team, boys who would become household names in Charlie George, John Radford, and Ray Kennedy. Alongside Frank McLintock and Peter Shorey, they reached the League Cup in 1968 and 1969, but losing each one. They managed to make it into Europe for the 1970 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup however, winning it and ending their long trophy drought. The 1970-71 campaign then came, in which Arsenal recorded their first double winning campaign where they won the FA Cup and the League title, winning the league by defeating Tottenham at White Hart Lane on the last day, and defeating Liverpool 2-1 in extra time at Wembley. (And *we* complain about six years. Try 17 and then letās talk crisis) Sadly the double winning side was broken up shortly after this, and after finishing 16th and 17, Bertie Mee gave his resignation.
Terry Neill would be appointed manager, and his time at the helm witnessed the strong emergence of an Irish core of Liam Brady, Pat Rice, Frank Stapleton, Pat Jennings, and David OāLeary which gave Arsenal a still-strong following amongst the Irish. While Neillās time at the club was in the midst of the Liverpool dominance, he still managed to direct the club to three FA Cup finals in 1978, 79, 80 but only winning it in 79, when Alan Sunderland won the match in injury time to record a now-famous win. The 1979-80 season saw Arsenal play a record breaking 70 matches and reaching two finals, the FA Cup loss to West Ham and losing the finals in Europe to Valencia on penalties. The summer of 1980 saw Liam Brady leave for Juventus and apart from 1982-83, Arsenal continued to make the top four, but never looked like winning anything. The lost both Cup semi-finals that year and and Terry Neill struggled to manage the club, arguing with key players as a drinking culture immersed itself at Arsenal. After losing to Third Division Walsall in the League Cup, Neill was fired in Decemeber 1983 and replaced with Don Howe, under whom Arsenal would fare no better. And when Howe heard the board had approached Terry Venables (then at Barcelona) he resigned and Steve Burtenshaw was named caretaker while the club searched for a replacement. Alex Ferguson, then at Aberdeen in Scotland, was approached, but he rejected Arsenal and six month later would find himself at Manchester United.
In May 1986 former Arsenal player, George Graham was appointed manager of Arsenal. Graham would slowly sell off older players and promote from the youth team and was able to dictate a stronger sense of discipline at the club, something the previous managers had attempted and failed at. In Grahamās debut season, Arsenal was able to with the League Cup, coming from behind in the final against Liverpool with a double by Charlie Nichols. This was in the midst of a UEFA English ban for European competitions in relation to the Heysel disaster, and so Arsenal missed out on the 87-88 UEFA Cup.
The 87-88 campaign saw Arsenal lose the League Cup final to Luton Town, but Graham was building a squad that would continue to improve with their young defense coming together under captain Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Steve Bould and Nigel Winterburn. This, buoyed by the terrific midfield of David Rocastle, Michael Thomas and Paul Merson and goal-scoring sensation Alan Smith, in 1989 Arsenal would finally win their first League title since 1971, and would do so in stunning fashion. Arsenal led the league since Christmas, but allowed Liverpool, who were going for the Double, to overtake them by losing to Derby County and drawing at home to Wimbeldon. The final match of the season was at Anfield and Arsenal were required to win by two goals in order to win the title. With 90 minutes gone, Arsenal were up 1-0 when this happened:
And Arsenal were League Champions. Arsenal would have to wait until the 1990-91 season to find success again, and had to do so despite losing two points after a on-field brawl with Manchester United at Old Trafford, and losing Tony Adams for four months when he was sent to prison for drunk driving in December that year. However, they only lost one league match the entire year, and won the title by seven points. After signing Ian Wright from Crystal Palace in 1991 and losing David Rocastle to Leeds United the year after, Arsenal became known as āBoring, boring Arsenalā depending on their stout defense and the goal-scoring prowess of Wright to win games. The FA Premier League was then created for the 1992-93 season, in which Arsenal were one of the founding members, and became the first club to win the FA Cup and League Cup double. The following year Arsenal won their second European trophy, defeating Parma 1-0 in the Cup Winnerās Cup final in Copenhagen.
Arsenal were forced to sack George Graham February 1995 when it was found he had taken an illegal payment of a player. Bruce Rioch took over at Arsenal, who guided Arsenal to the Cup Winnerās Cup Final, but lost to Real Zaragoza from a 40 yarder in the 120 minute; a howler by David Seaman. The summer of 1995 saw him Rioch sign Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp, breaking the English transfer recorded at the time. He was sacked just before the 1996 season over a dispute about the transfer funds. Arsenal then made the audacious and obscure decision to hire Frenchman Arsene Wenger from Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan to manage their club. Wenger changed the club, completely eliminating the drinking culture that was prevalent at the time, changing the diets and training methods of the players, and brought about a change in tactics. Wenger brought in unknown players such as Patrick Vieira, Nicolas Anelka, Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars in 1997 and with George Grahamās noturious defense, Wenger became the first foreign manager to win the 1997-98 League title. Arsenal won the Double that year, winning the FA Cup. Ian Wright left that summer, having broken Cliff Bastinās goalscoring record, his tally at Arsenal ending at 185 goals. The next few years were trophy-barren at Arsenal, despite signing Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry. The rivalry with Manchester United fired up 1998-99 however as Arsenal finished 2nd in the League to United, and lost the FA Cup semi-final replay in extra time to them as well. The next season Arsenal again finished second best to Manchester United, this time by 18 points, and lost the EUFA Cup final in 0-0 game that went to penalties in Copenhagen to Galatasaray. The 2000-01 season saw Arsenal finish 2nd yet again to Manchester United, and lost in the FA Cup to Liverpool; as well as losing on the āaway goals ruleā in the Champions league quarter-finals to eventual finalist Valencia.
The 2001-02 season became memorable as Arsenalās furious attacking side lead by Thierry Henry won the Double for a record-tying third time. Arsenal were the only club to score in every game of the League that season, and went unbeaten away from home. They defeated Manchester United in the FA Cup, before also beating Chelsea in the finals. The 2002-03 was notable when Arsenal became the first club in over 20 years to retain the FA Cup title when they defeated Southampton in the final, but lost out on the League title to United losing their final game of the season at home to Leeds. That Last match day defeat to Leeds would become Arsenalās last loss for over a year, and the 2003-04 season saw the rise of the āInvinciblesā where they won 26 and drew 12 matches, finishing 11 points clear of Chelsea in second place. Preston North End in 1888-89 is the only other team to have ever completed such a feat.
The following season Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 49 consecutive League matches, an English league football record, when they finally lost to Manchester United. They failed to win the title that year as the newly cash rich Chelsea finished 12 points ahead, but managed to win the FA Cup for their 3rd time in four years. The 2005-06 season was largely disappointing, and Arsenal barely managed to obtain fourth place and their Champions League spot when St. Totteringhamās day came on the very last match day when Sp*rs lost to West Ham and Arsenal won their last ever match at Highbury stadium over Wigan. In the Champions League however, Arsenal made it the Finals against Barcelona, but a silly red card to keeper Jens Lehmann early in the match had Arsenal desperately defend a 1-0 lead for most of the game, before two late goals by Barca took the title away. Arsenal completed the move from historic Highbury to the Emirates stadium July 2006. Highbury was limited to only 38,500 seats after standing was banned in English football, and with the club unable to expand the stadium and needing to increase revenue streams to compete with money-giant clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United, a move down the road to Ashburton Grove was made. To facilitate the move in a manner that did not destroy the club financially, Arsene Wenger was forced to sell off highly paid stars and transition the club with youngsters, while still managing to be highly competitive and keep the fans into the massive 60,000+ stadium. Since the move Arsenal have stayed in the Champions League, qualifying for the competition for 14 years in a row, and have remained competitive in the Premier league, but ultimately collapsing the final months of the campaigns. December 11, 2011 saw Arsenal play at home and marked Arsenalās 125 year in existence, and Arsenal celebrated the occasion the only way they know how; with style and class. The great-great-grandson of Fred Beardsley, the man who sourced the Arsenal original kit, assisted Vic Akers with the clubās kits and was brought onto the pitch in the pre-game ceremony. Supportersā Stories were installed on benches outside the Armoury. A sixpence was thrown by referee Howard Webb at kick-off. Inside the playersā tunnel, celebrations of the 5-3 over Chelsea, and Henri Lansbury Sp*rs goal have been included on the walls. Arsenal had the Royal Artillery and Orchestra playing outside the stadium. The 1970s greats Bob Wilson, Charlie George, Frank McLintock, John Radford and Terry Neill were all introduced onto the Emirates pitch, followed by David OāLeary, Paul Davis, George Graham, Alan Smith, Anders Limpar and Ian Wright. Members of the Invincibles then took to the pitch, Ray Parlour, Robert Pires, Jens Lehmann, Lee Dixon, Lauren and Thierry Henry showed up. The great-grandchildren of founder David Danskin carried the matchball to begin the game. They even ensured there was a cannon alongside side the pitch.
Perhaps the best part of the weekend was the Friday prior, when Arsenal unveiled the statues of Herbert Chapman, Tony Adams and Thierry Henry outside the Stadium. So many greats could have been chosen, but itās difficult to argue with the man who revolutionized football in the 1930s, the winning-est club captain, and the Arsenalās record goal-scorer.
May there be more greatness to come for the beloved and storied club.

the whole thing was a shame. All the players were so lazy. There were no penetrating runs, no ideas and no cohesion at all. It's fine that we lost but to see we play like a 3rd rate football team is very frustrating.

Mannone, he just a good shot stopper that's all about him. Never had any command, and cleverness to play in such important position. Kinda like Manuel Almunia. Sometime, there'll be tight and boring affair like this. One mistake could be more than enough.
QUOTE(funnyTONE @ Oct 21 2012, 02:58 AM)
I've been observing him quite a while. To tell the truth, I'm not impressed by him. Sure he made some good stops. But he doesn't command his box well. His ball distribution is average at best. And the thing I hate most is when he always throw the ball to the closest defender regardless of how many opponents are nearby. I haven't seen him taking against penalty, but I rate szczesny much, much higher than him. Not that he was any bad tonight, but when szczesny returns, I hope he'll go back as back up.
Added on October 21, 2012, 3:01 amCan't wait to read what arseblog.com has to say about this match. This is what he wrote in the liveblog.
"One of the Norwich players going around telling his teammates to concentrate, think about things. They could probably play the rest of this game blindfolded and still win."

I hope for consistency at their best (the invincible era) more than anything really. Oh well, just another weekend with a lot of stress.

Very sad. After 10 days without arsenal's game..suddenly watched the worst ever performance by them. Y every big boys can win..we still cant manage to get a single point. Depressed!
Badlucks against promoted still there? Pls no...

Yeah, we're so tired from the inter-lull, everyone else seemed just fine. But not us, nope. Oh man, at HT break I really wished Arsene would shove a rocket up their asses. Its a dissapointing weekend indeed. Thank god we have Sundays to drown in sorrow.... Here's a little fact to vent some anger over Norwich. You guys recall the knee-high tackle against Cazorla in the first half? Well, apparently its the same guy who broke Sagna's leg.

Slept early and didn't watch teh game. Woke up at 2 sth & saw the FT score, laughed a bit and went back to sleep. Damn I hate having memories of games like this.
yea well... we dont seem to have the ability to break down teams when they play ultra defensive. we have players who can play a defence-splitting through pass, but if there's no space to run into we can't play that way. if the passing game cant be played usually a team will try to breakdown the opponent using individual brilliance (dribblers), crossing (crossers and a target man), long shooting and long balls. i dont see any dribblers in the team, crossing has been awful all season long, and long balls really do not fit in wenger's ideology. only santi seems to be attempting long shots at goal.

better don't watch. its like watching our reserved playing. this is a game where we're supposed to take the full point to win the league.
Norwhich were realy the better side last night. Seemed much more deadly in attacking compared to us. Giroud seems to be mis-hitting balls quite often, and gervinho just does the same cutting to the inner box every time.
Carzola was crazy last night, super fast trickery with the balls, but no one to finish off the play.
Why is it podolski comes out for a sub each and every game?
poldi's been rusty for a while now. well i might be comparing him to his fantastic early season burst where he was our goal revenue and that might not be entirely fair to him, but he's been quite poor for quite some time.

haish just 1 lost already lost hope.... not like we lost 5 out of 8 matches
last season 15 on the table still manage to get 3th at the end of season every teams will have their up and down
Lost 2 actually... no I wasn't talking abt the losses. It's losing to teams that we should be winning against and drawing when we should be winning that is gonna haunt us come May

even to fight for 3rd place sometimes the team looked wobbly and unconvincing..

Our atk yesterday is just toothless. Something seriously wrong with our tactics and training. Often I see our forwards stand in a line waiting a miracle thru pass. Without some support to the midfield at all, it's really hard to break a bus moreover at ppl home ground. Chelsea have been practicing the triangle movement of barca and it seems very effective. Or maybe we just dont have enough technically gifted players to do so.
Anyhow, yesterday game was the worst ever. Everyone just woke up from a sleeping pill night

Norwich have the Passion,Desire and Hunger to win the game but not arsenal... its nothing arsenal can do if opposition team perform against them, not all big team will get an easy win against relegation candidates... GO ASK WIGAN every season they will beat at least 2 or 3 big team in BPL

Yes I agree with u that not all team will get an easy win against relegation candidates, bt arsenal could hv done so much better yesterday.
now with both walcott and ox injured idk what kind of tactic will we have after this.... there is no one capable to be a super sub after this most of our back up is just a defensive minded players apart from arshavin
this is time of they year where injury will hit us all over again zzzz last season we lost defensive minded players due to injury and this season we lost attacking minded players zzzz
they compartmentalised our attack, essentially parked the bus, almost zero gaps, by the time the ball reached our forwards, they leave little rooms for shots. it's clear we need SzczÄsny back from injury, he would have caught the ball, the verminator looked sloppy as well. Hopefully during the Schalke match, arsene gets tempted by Klaas.

as wenger mentioned, we weren't good enough, we played our football, but credits to them really solid defense... as for their goal,of course manonne could have done better but ain't really gonna blame him we've seen many off these type of goals happen to so many keepers our penetration tak cukup hebat semalam
enemy park bus ever since they took the lead if its that easy to break buses, we woulda been champion year in year out thus, we did tried la, but nv good enough
Look like this season no need to watch arsenal games liao .. Another trophyless season quite sure aledi ... Very frustrated to watch game like yesterday midnite ... the team just passing passing and passing, keep possesion but never threaten, once lost possession, norwich look very dangerous ... Ramsey is not good enuf, Gervinho is not good enuf, seldom track back to help defend, look at the bench, when players on pitch not performing, there is no players on bench can substitute to change the game, maybe only one wilshere but he is just come back and it is very risky to loss him again if he play ... Haaiizzz ...

this enemy park the bus thing has been going on for far too long; and I'm talking multiple consecutive seasons here . the enemy do it because they know it works against us. but we keep on playing our same own game season after season and hoping that 'this time it'll be different'. the very definition of idiocity I'm telling you
and Norwich does not even parked the bus just for the sake of it yesterday. they defended from up top, pressed us all over the field and exploited our weakness. that's called playing with purpose, or playing with tactic that maximize one chance of winning. something that Arsene Wenger doesn't seems want to do very often. sometimes I wondered if he rasa berdosa to do that

itu le kena tanya le boss la... sometimes if given the chance i would like to sit next to wenger during games like this listen to what he has to offer to Sbould and the rest of the players we alway said in wenger we trust thus,i am sure wenger knows what he is dealing with and surely he has made some changes in terms of strategy, creativity and personal advices but it did not worked out
from the way norwich defended ytd, of course they press up the field on and off...but when they go back its the whole team at the penalty box its just like kuih lapis defenders, layers and layers of them any thru ball to giroud intercepted by 1-2 norwich men i guess we needed a few long shots from cazorla and others..which i think we did not try much last night
Given Giroud's height I'd think he should score a header or two, in fact when I looked for his video he did score quite many goals with header but he doesn't seem to be able to fight for header so far, I think he needs to go to the gym more to strengthen his body as he can't even receive aerial ball well sometimes.
Another problem with Giroud seems to be that he doesn't read passes from midfield very well. To break a defense like this you need splitting passes unseen by the opponents to reach the front line for your striker to go 1 on 1 with the GK. He needs to attack the offside trap more, up to this point I haven't seen him flagged offside too much. Cazorla and Ramsey always tried to create that yesterday but their balls but well closed by Norwich's defenders, even Arteta did a brilliant one yesterday only to be headed away.
I might be expecting too much from him but he's our only usable, natural CF at the moment and if he doesn't deliver it will be hard, can't expect Cazorla to net something like his third goal in West Ham game every week. Then the flanks.. Podolski's been on his off day for too long! Gervinho too wasteful in front third and he should learn how to cross. I only saw his first cross yesterday and it's really a brilliant first touch cross.

4 possible trophies, 1 only reaches to 1/4 of journey, 1 started 1games, 1 still in group stage and we're topping the group
they just cant accept a lost they expect we to win every match available.....
Sorry but with all due respect we should be murdering teams like Norwich. What concerned me more wasn't the result but rather the manner in which we lost. There was absolute 0 positives from last night's game apart from Gnabry's decent cameo. Sums up how sh*t we were to a T last night.
These are the games you should be winning week in week out if you want to have a shout at the title. I do believe to win the title its not about getting results against the likes of Man Utd/Chelsea/Man City but rather putting away the other 15 or 16 teams. Its pointless to win the big 4 or 5 mini league but fail to win the other smaller teams. Prime example: Liverpool in recent years.
If you were not worried about last night's performance then I really don't know what would make you worry. Probably when we are relegated then only you will start jumping.

so fast give up?
The same old arsenal, it repeated every season since 2005 arsenal won FA cup. The way of losing the games is so predictable. Norwich is a basis game that must win if arsenal want to challenging for title. I just watch 70 mins of the match, i cant see any sign arsenal going to get any goal. ARSEBLOG, THE ARSENAL BLOG NORWICH 1-0 ARSENAL: FEEBLE, FLAT, FORGETTABLE
Posted by arseblog on 21 Oct 2012 / 152 arses
Match Report ā By the numbers ā Video ā Player ratings
We waited two weeks for that? Bring back the Interlull, I say.
Normally after a game thereās all kinds of stuff to talk about, angles you can take, analyses to be made, but itās difficult this morning. Firstly, because Arsenal did very little in yesterdayās game thatās worth talking about again, and secondly ⦠erm ⦠well, I think firstly pretty much covers it.
It was a day when we just didnāt click, didnāt find any kind of rhythm and never really appeared capable of creating chances. And look, those days happen to all teams, and it is, in fairness, the first time itās happened to us this season. If we were somewhat nullified by Chelsea a couple of weeks ago, we did it to ourselves yesterday. The team looked flat and lethargic, the lack of movement was noticeable from the start. Arsenalās players were static far too often, never made any space for the man on the ball and thus made it easy for Norwich to defend against us.
The home side worked hard enough, as youād expect, but they are a team we should have been able to cope with. That we didnāt from the start is worrying enough, that we were simply unable to lift it in the second half is even more concerning. Weāve all seen these games ā Arsenal fall behind but in the last half an hour step it up and bombard the opposition goal. I could be wrong but I think our first shot in anger on target was in the 87th minute when Ruddy saved Mikel Artetaās low drive. There was no slice of good fortune, no moment of genius to get us back into it, and Norwich could have scored more but for Grant Holtās decision making which was, thankfully, rubbish.
As for their goal, well, it was avoidable. Tettey was not closed down quickly enough in midfield, allowing him to get the shot off, and secondly, and I know the ball was swerving a bit, Vito Mannone should have done better. The ball squirmed sideways into the path of Holt and even he couldnāt miss from there. For me, the bottom line is a top class keeper would have dealt with that shot. Either held onto it ā something even the not very good Ruddy was able to do late in the game ā or push it away from goal and not back into the path of the onrushing attacker.
Heās honest and he tries hard but those small moments are exactly why Arsene Wenger would have let Mannone go this summer. Those small moments are why you need a top class goalkeeper if you want to win, or even challenge, for the league title. Itās so important on days when a team fails to perform that you donāt give away a silly goal and defensively, and from the point of view of the goalkeeper, that was a silly goal to concede. Very serious consideration needs to be given to our goalkeeping situation now, a January purchase ought to be a priority because even if Szczesny returns and cements his place as number 1, we need more reliable back-up at the very least.
It was a reminder of the worst kind of post-Interlull performance yesterday. We had them in the past, we have them now, but we cannot blame the international break. United, Chelsea and Man City all won yesterday ā all three came from behind to win too ā and theyāve been similarly afflicted by the Interlull. Sure, thereās some mitigation when you face a team which has one player away and should be fresher, but in that case you would expect, or at least hope, the quality of our players and football would make the difference. Not yesterday.
It was as flat and dismal a performance as I can remember and the day took its toll too on the injury list. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came on, made a great burst down the right, and got a kick for his troubles which meant he had to be replaced by Andrei Arshavin. Arsene then threw on 17 year old Serge Gnabry for his debut and while we all love to see young talent given a chance at the club, the reality is that on a day when we needed something special, something to lift us, we were relying on two teenagers. As talented as they are they donāt yet have the experience and ability to graft out a result the way more senior players do.
The manager said of the decision not to use Jack Wilshere:
"We have to be conscious he has not played for 14 months. I would have brought him on if the game had allowed it today but it was too intense. He will play on Monday with the Reserves and then we will see where we go from there. He needs games."
I understand the caution about Wilshere but why have him on the bench at all if heās not ready? I get that we could have thrown him on for twenty minutes if we were winning comfortably, but thatās rather presumptuous. If anything, Wilshereās game is more suited for a day like yesterday when you need somebody brave, somebody with energy and drive, but clearly Arsene felt he wasnāt fit enough for that. So while his presence for a nice bit of PR before the game it was, for all intents and purposes, just that and useless from a footballing point of view.
Overall, a disappointing, frustrating day and itās tough to understand why we couldnāt get going or cause any kind of problems for a team who hadnāt won a league game until yesterday. It doesnāt take much these days to pick at the old wounds. Once again we stumble against a team we should have too much for. Arsene says we lacked the sharpness (*sigh*), that perhaps we underestimated the opposition (*double sigh*) and that he hopes the result is a shock to the system.
I hope it is too because more days like that and this season will start to prove extremely tough going indeed. Letās hope itās a one-off (from this seasonās point of view at least), and that we can regain our form and rhythm in midweek, but thereās a air of familiarity about this one thatās hard to shake off.
Mind you this is a very, very mild review coming from arseblog. But i agree on most points that he makes. At this moment, Arsenal fans are just taking ANY excuse/reasons to the lacklustre performance last night. tired, interlull, injuries, curse, etc..... but the truth is, WE SUX big time.
Only redemption is that this will be a wake up call for the players, managers and owners to realise that to have a winning team, we need a winning mentality.
Sorry but with all due respect we should be murdering teams like Norwich. What concerned me more wasn't the result but rather the manner in which we lost. There was absolute 0 positives from last night's game apart from Gnabry's decent cameo. Sums up how sh*t we were to a T last night.

Precisely. Yet you aren't worried? Last night was the epitome of the same bullsh*t we have faced over the past 6 to 7 years which has left us trophyless.

i chose to believe that last night's performance was a one-off and a wake up call considering that we have NINE PLAYERS in our first team who are in their FIRST/SECOND SEASON with us.
if they've been playing together for years, and still played like shit, then i would start worrying.

exactly. its not called being pessimist or what, its being called not delusional
Haven't posted here a long time.... what we need is consistency.. we played big against big teams & then against smaller team we forgot how to play big.. maybe we underestimated Norwich... even in the Arsenal column in The Star on Saturday it says it shud be a walk in the park for us. But we walked the wrong way in the wrong park. Our defence was suspect, struggling most of the game...not like the defence we saw in the 1st 5 games.... no, we're not gonna be relegated, but we sure have to do better if we were to challenge for something this season... win the 1st 3 games ppl say we can win the league... lose 1 game against Norwich we gonna be relegated... hahah...

Not enuf wake up call for last 7 years ? ... Man city won the league last season with majority of their player like Hart, Nasri, Milner, Aguero, Clinchy, Sliva, who are just first or second season with them ...
This is not a forgivable performance. We could have conceded at the very least three more goals if not for Norwich indecisiveness in front of goal. The BPL is a harsh and punishing league and so if you allow your team to perform like that then we will become a mid table team very soon.

Exactly. What upset me is the performance not the result.
Defeats do happen. But the lack of effort and urgency should not, well at least for a team with the aspirations of winning the league.
sorry to say, mannone is just not good enough for us. IMO, he is even worse than floppy fabianski.
Same to ramsey. You can criticize me, im not just a fan of ramsey. I dont believe he has the ability to become good player for us (this is what I think now).

Never liked ramsey as well, i mean whats so special bout him anyway ? cant make special passes, cant defend properly... only see him jogging most of the time. Imo podol should b the main striker, with giroud as support. Anyone else thinks gervinho's a so so player ?
Its difficult to be objective and fair after the dismal performance against Norwich City, but I do hope fellow fans realize that shuffling the team at this hour is pointless. The team needs stability and compatibility. Above all, we need a team with the right mindset to carry on the responsibility of winning games every single week. I mean seriously, they shouldn't be asking for more. They've been paid good money, good facilities, darn good manager. Only thing expected of them is to come and train everyday and play your hearts out. Everything else is second priority.
Don Vito never was my choice, but we don't have any other GK as backup, and despite my clear preference towards Sczesny, I do agree that all our GKs need the play time to improve themselves. But yeah, hopefully when our beloved Sczesny returns.
Aaron Ramsey is difficult. He is good at times, but like all Arsene's beloved goodson (Diaby, Walcott), he is too inconsistent. I can only imagine if he was to move to another club, he'll be spendinga more time on the bench than on field. Personally, I just got tired of his backheels. Not to say that we should sell him, but he should just be a sub than a first teamer.
Despite all my negative comments, I still see Mikel Arteta playing a good role in the match. Always so reliable and holding his position well. Carl Jenkinson too was active on the right field. Rarely Norwich City got hold of his positions, which I can't say the same about Andre Santos. I feel that our RB is a solid position and having both Carl Jenkinson and Bacary Sagna on our side, we could worry less on that one.
I just hope after this season lost, Wenger will leave the club. Same strategy and the same results will be end of the season. It just a bunch of kids trying to find the net and been blocked by a bunch of bull defense.

damn it, everton drew against QPR, we could have gone 4th position. Now it's gone. And the next match against QPR is going to be hard because QPR is going all-out attack no doubt, since they haven't a win yet, same situation as Norwich.

I'm less worried if QPR decided to goes all out atk. Seriously.
Szczesny is still young and being young makes you aggressive, which could be dangerous at times and cause you to make fatal mistakes like what he did in Euro.
I hope he will be more humble after coming back from injury, a GK needs confidence but you have to stay calm and composed and not committing needless fouls. That's what experience will teach you so Szczesny will definitely need more game time but at the moment we might need a better back up keeper. Mannone is just not up for the job, time and time again he missed saves he should have made, hence the reason Wenger wants to sell him last summer.
The January window will be important to us, we better spend on some prolific goalscorers as we definitely need to beef up our attacking options.
all gooners please be patience abit, yes everyone angry when we lose match we must win... but we should congrats how Norwich play, they play pressing game, we cant play during in pressure i think
yet someone want Wenger to leave Arsenal... there are a reason why we cant spend a lot of money for the last 7 seasons but fans never really care about it all they want just short term success which is trophy but not a long term success which is stability to the club

Looks like Wilshere is playing well for the u21 team... Involved in all chances created and two goals scored by Eisfield. Time to be bold and play Eisfield on the right flank!

darn it, 3 hrs too late. was gonna share this here too. truly amazing person.
What I see from Wilshere is that he is consistent. Always reliable during defence and offence and a true teamwork kinda person. Can see that he is a cool but determined on midfield and always so focused towards moving the ball upfront. Individually, he has lots of potentials (as all youngsters do) and used to look up to Fabregas, but these days he's marking his foot in his own style. Hoping that he will stay injury free this season and be an influential player for our team.
Benzema is true quality. Can score when given even a slight chance. He is La Liga approved, no doubt should fit like a glove in EPL. Best get it done as early as possible if RMA really wants Falcao.
i've heard enough from the past few seasons to take any links of a proven player with a pinch of salt. benzema's class, tho if we're talking about strikers outside EPL i've always been a fan of edinson cavani.

all the best !! . still cant wait for the kick-off time.
OH shi....Vermaelen yellow carded. Schalke is fast on counter and slicing our defence like butter. Please Steve Bould, create your magic tonight.
Added on October 25, 2012, 3:04 amOh man, Ramsey positioning looks horrendous. He needs to learn from Giroud. That looks to be a sure goal if he was two steps back.

Gervinho just wasted a golden opportunity to go 1 on 1 against the keeper. Did he just got cold feet? Haizz....wasted too much chances.
Added on October 25, 2012, 3:13 am26 minutes of awesome attack from both sides. I love the intense pressure seeing our players moving the ball forward. Cazorla is involved 80% of our attack at the moment. Hopefully we can see some goals in the first half. Its an open game right now from both sides.

my god so horrible at the left flank. u can't blame santos, he has been defending 1 on 2 situation all the time. Podolski, Gervinho all no where to be seen
Good, entertaining first half despite zero goals scored. Despite our solid possession, attention must be said of the poor execution by Gervinho and the too obvious lack of concentration by Santos. Please mr. Wenger, take Santos off before he causes us anymore trouble.

Gervinho - Run here and there but his brain look like missing, no finishing no nothing....
Ramsey - can already thinking about retirement, this lad looks like opponent in Arsenal shirt, can't pass right, can't defend properly, find opponent better than his teammate, Garbage!!!
Santos - Ever since this piece of crap starting, we lost, defend like sunday amateur league players, Can somebody shoot him please.... to end our misery...
screw u all who said arsenal don't hav enuf funds to buy players. these are the shareholders talking, not your typical 9 to 5 supporters. the main culprit ? Stanley Kroenke !!
playing 433 always leave fullbacks open to attacks from opponent winger. Santos had almost no support at all from Podolski in defending their attack. for me, i am angrier at Santos for their opener. again, he played the striker onside as he did against Norwich
imagine this Arsenal team without Mikel and Santi...terrifying thought
which we may very well be prepared to accept as probable scenario, with the boss seemingly happy to run them to ground before Christmas by playing them in every single matches this season bar the League Cup match
Ramsey is always shit. I'm not sure why there are still people likes him. We keep too many rubbish "potential youngsters" for years. It is time to clean these people.
Luckily i didn't watch. You can bet ur ass im not catching Arsenal play this weekend. It's only going to end up disappointing. Can never have high hopes or sight of optimism when Arsenal play.
Chelsea vs ManU, here i come. Bring ManU down, Chelsea!!
Such a terrible game to watch. Wasted my time staying up to see such poor performance.
Why can't Wenger f**king realize that Ramsey has been cutting off all the strings Arteta and Cazorla try to build in the midfield, he's hardworking but all his hard work HAS DONE MORE HARM THAN GOOD TO THE TEAM. His f**king misplaced passes always make us concede hard-earned possession and his two attempts to cross the ball near the end are just JOKE, flying far away from the goal!
Then there's the defense, what in the flying f**k to leave Klaas Jan Huntelaar lurking in front of your goal to go 1 on 1 against Mannone, both TV5 and BFG are guilty for second goal! Then there's Santos, I don't even know what to say anymore, it's him that gave space for the cross of first goal. Then there's the Mannone who's known for his shot stopping? It's time to say even his shot stopping is mediocre at best, true you don't expect GK to save that kind of goals but a good keeper will be able to save those every once in a while, he's saved 0 of those hard, close range goals thus far! Not to mention his ridiculous decision to bring down Affellay.
Going upfront I don't know what to say anymore, playing Gervinho and Ramsey beside each other? Then you'll have first shot on target at 90th minute. So many glorious chances wasted by Gervinho and he and Ramsey are just trash. It's painful to watch them two play.
Pethatic performance. The godson is always the godson. Why until today Wenger still believe in Ramsey. Why until today Podolski still being sub in every game even AW know we need goal. Why Wenger Why!
English supporters -- tend to chant and singing when something exciting happens. Jeered and boo their own player when things not go in their way. Wasn't that sarcastic cheer or jeer when Gervinho was substituted? That's the last thing you should do publicly as a supporter, think of the lasting effect.
Traveling fans are different though. Still remember the never ending singing after that shambolic display at Trad Brick Stadium last year.
These are the main reason why i don't completely agree with EPL being the best league in the world. The football, talent, drama are there but the atmosphere are sadly lacking compared to some other leagues. In my book, atmosphere is the other half of the football.
How many time times traveling foreign fans completely drown the home supporters in English soil? Even Liga M supporters are much vocal. I guess it's down to culture, they're polite, well mannered inside the stadium. No standing, no flare, no laser, no specific group to lead the chants (Ultras) etc.
I know football is 2 way of give and take, good performance will resulting more vocal support. However i still think the home fans could do better. It's devastating to see thousand of empty seats at the final moment.
Those are my observation, from my TV with little bit of real-life stadium experience.
Seriuosly we need another AM or CM to support Carzola. Pity on him, really played and gave 100% in each game.. Hope Jack or Rosicky can stat playing this weekend. We cant afford to put Ramsey all the way.
Main talking point still on the Striker position. Though Giroud was a great scorer in Montpelier, but I do belief he stills needs time to settle down in the Premier League.
Wenger needs to break the bank to sign a very good striker but that would be less likely due to his policy. But still I do trust Wenger will make up for it after this horrid run so far.
Seems like we're in a slump now . There is always someone to step up during these period . But hopefully we dont rely on 1 person again , sigh . I still couldn't understand how Arsene can tolerate these few players in the team .
we need striker we need backup for gibbs we need wilshere to come to squad like before n we need someone that good enough incase ateta or santi or both injured..
Hope AW can stop playing Ramsey. Hes just not good enough for bench moreover in the first 11. He got nothing to offer except having the stamina running around the pitch like a clown. Not strong and technical enough to handle midfield, not quick or skillful enough to take on defenders up front. Doesn't posses a decent shooting skill. Rage ar !!!

becoz sometime these player become supersub sometime these player play like godlike..but most of the time they play like last nite
I'm waiting for the AGM meeting today, sure stakeholders supporters' will shoot at the board directors..and also let's see what the excuse coming from them.

board of directors: umm we always appear in the champions league
our beloved club is facing a crisis.. columnists are calling us Title Pretenders...instaed of Contenders at such early stages. i myself is worried of the progress we've made. no doubt we did well defensively at the opening portion of our season, but now, we start seeing the gaps. offensively, i still have reservations of Giroud. he might be good for clubs in mid-table but not for Arsenal.
as such, im praying desperately for AW to dip his pockets are get someone in January. who would you want in your team? my choices are as below
Strikers 1. Falcao - brilliant striker, the heart of AM. rumours surround this guy but AM would want a hefty price for him. 2. Llorente - AW's young doppleganger is execellent in the air and technically gifted as well. cheaper price tag 3. Huntelaar - was always rumored to join us when RvP was still ard as well but at times he slacks off. 4. Saldado - goal machine, gifted , hardworker. he'll pair up nicely with santi and arteta 5. Others - Drogba, Adrian Lopez - both are linked with us
Midfielders 1. Cabaye - strong, hard working, a proper DM as compared to Arteta
Defenders 1. Leyton Baines - easy fit, good at set pieces, quick.. better than Andre facking Santos
Not surprised. Mostly played away, hence advantage to the underdogs, not heavyweights. With the exception of ManU, lucky enough to pull through after going 2 goals down at home.

Haih. Dunno what to say when you concede 2 goals in the final ten minutes.
Ya, that was bad compared with ManU leaking 2 goals in the beginning of their match.

Cabaye - not a DM just a CM
Leyton Baines - at least 15 millions which is never going to happen in Wenger Policy

I dunno why AW still keep faith in Ramsey, he should not be in squad at all. AW has very good patient. Gervinho not consistent, just good enuf sitting on bench not first eleven.
I have anticipate that arsenall will lose this game and it really happened.
No eyes see from now until wilshere come back, the only hope to turn things around ...
guys, Can't blame entirely on Ramsey on the CL match. Ramsey was played out of position. He played left winger instead of central midfield, also Gervinho is playing as a central striker. It's a hit or miss situation w Gervinho cause that's just him, inconsistent as ever.

Demmit Cazorla. That's the first time I see him play a poor pass. Good thing is that we're attacking a lot at the moment. Lets just hope our defense is alert.

We seem to be a bit high up on the line. Even Arteta is far into QPR's half. Good thing is QPR is easy to break especially in the left side. Hopefully we can convert one of the attack into a goal. So far, Wislhere has been doing most of the shootings.
Added on October 27, 2012, 10:25 pmI don't think Andre Santos is going to be called up to play in Brazil team anytime soon. He's got lots of improvement to do. Shaun Wright Phillips is waltzing around him all day.

Jack Wislhere looks very sharp indeed. He's back with his quick feet, but I really worried seeing him falling and pinned like dat. COYG! Just shoot already.
missed the entire first half cuz went beraya. but seems like i missed nothing. from the looks of it ramsey's been dismal and wilshere's been a breath of fresh air?
Quite LOL. At halftime they brought in Arsenal Ladies and show off their two trophies won. The FA and the LEague cup. Hahaa....kinda rubbing salt on the wounds eh?
