I just got my hand on the WH-1000XM3, here's my initial comparison with the old MDR-1000X.
The sound-stage is definitely wider compared to the first gen. It sound bassy, and I can't use the equalizer to fix it unless I revert to SBC. They do sound a little more detailed for BT headphone, but nothing to shout about. I'm not sure if it any burn-in, maybe I'll try burning mine tonight. Also, I'm not an audiophile so take it as a grain of salt.
NC is only so slightly better, at least the quick A/B test inside the bus and at the store. Good news it is not worse, because some in Amazon claimed it is worse.
Built quality feels cheaper, but it is too early to tell. Probably it helped reducing the weight. There are only 2 buttons like the 2nd-gen, I love more buttons even if I don't really use them all.
Comfort is slightly improved due to the lighter weight. I think it may be nicer to sleep with these. Touch controls are the same, but the beep sound are softer, which is better for me.
USB-C charging is fast as advertised. The case which come with the headphone also feels a little cheaper, but I like that material. It fold down to a smaller size, good! more space for other things in my bag with/out using the case.
Do I recommend current 1000X or XM2 user to upgrade - NO, unless you really want that slight improvement in sound quality.

Just bought the WH-1000XM3 yesterday. So far so good, paired with my phone, laptop and desktop. It is really light weight and comforter than the XM2.
I tried playing the headphones through Jot w AK4490 DAC and it sounded more detailed and laid back than in BT mode(AFAIK, no LDAC on Windows 10). As edmund_yung stated above, the original EQ on the headphones are bassy but by disabling all Windows enhancement including bass boost will reduce that extra bass and give you a more flat response for longer period of listening.

Someone did a scientific test comparing LDAC and other BT codec. The ultimate guide to Bluetooth headphones: LDAC isn’t Hi-res

Yup agreed, I'm listening on my pc with no boosts. The bass is much more controlled compared to BT on my mobile.

Listening thru cable is definitely going to sound better due to the better DAC/AMP you're rocking, by passing the build in DAC. I think a wired headphone half the price will sound better than XM3, minus the NC.
Just gotta accept that Sony tune it to better suit pop and EDM listeners, which is a bigger market for this kind of headphone compared to other genres.
Now I'm trying out AptX HD to see if there's any slight different. Need to make sure Sony app is killed before paring, otherwise only stuck with either LDAC or SBC in the Adroid's Developer Menu.

QUOTE(jonoave @ Oct 12 2018, 05:27 PM) Did anyone receive this email - some new IEM were launched recently and i wasn't even aware of it. Thought they already launched all their new electronics in IFA this year. Only available to view in the US version of the website https://www.sony.com/electronics/in-ear-hea...1L1PAUDMOREINFOThree IEMS: IER-Z1R $2,299 IER-M7 $1,499 IER-M9 $799 They seemed to be studio monitors so I guess they focus more on accurate reproduction, not sure it will appeal to casual music fans. M7 & M9 are available in Malaysia now. Z1R should be next month, not sure whether will delay

Hi All,
Was wondering how much the difference in terms of sound quality between Sony Walkman NW-A40 series and NW-ZX300.
Ive tested both at Sony Center (using the display model MDR 1AM2, unbalanced btw) but maybe its because of the surrounding noise, I cant tell much about the difference?(or maybe its just my ears that could not tell the diff?)
Is it worth the price diff for the sound diff?
I know sound is quite subjective but appreciate your opinion here guys. Thanks.
