After awhile of shooting products, i arrive to some questions

1 ) What constitutes a good product photo ?

2 ) As long as the product looks clear and sharp and nice then its ok already ?

3 ) Is there like a next step to product photography ?

4 ) How do i know the arrangement of the product is good enough ? anything to do with fengshui ? haha

For me these are some recent product photos that i took

My favourite is #2 coz the reflection in the lens seems interesting and exciting for me hehe

C & C welcome

This is a gathering thread, anyone else who do product shoots too can post your works here

We try to share and improve together

white background should be white all over not grey on some and white on the rest

made use of the lighting to accentuate the product

and to me the usual side shot and 45" shot just wont cut it anymore

use the part of the product to highlight the feature of it

product photography is not about clear sharp picture and white background and bokeh alone

just bear in mind that different photography style works for different visual presentation. hilmiangah's are not applicable in all situation, that's why if you look at computer hardware website, it's all white background and all parts shown clearly because consumers want to see full thing.

the style hilmi used is of course, great for brochures or features that show a little highlight to get people's attention.

in fact some of Hilmi's photos has too much black space, which is not good. the first 2 pics are alright, the other 2 has decent highlights but barely pass due to too much dark areas and quite some distractions.

QUOTE(hilmiangah @ Oct 21 2012, 09:46 AM)

let me correct you on a few things.

1. product photography, has always been about clear / sharp pictures.

2. yes it's not about white background but product photo with white background makes it easy to manipulate, and easiest to apply on any design, whether print, web, whatever - because it works.

3. product photography has never been about bokeh to begin with. It's about Depth of Field.

QUOTE(hilmiangah @ Oct 21 2012, 09:46 AM)

not necessarily.

you can see for yourself http://www.shutterstock.com/g/briancyc how many are not white all over. there's more here http://www.dreamstime.com/Goldfries_more-latest-adition_pg1

QUOTE(hilmiangah @ Oct 21 2012, 09:46 AM)

this is correct.

QUOTE(hilmiangah @ Oct 21 2012, 09:46 AM)

there was never a fixed rule for angle. smile.gif

use LIGHT to highlight the product feature.

if you were to give me hilmi's photos vs adam's photos and ask me who would I hire, I would go for Adam's.

simply because 2 out of 2 of Adam's photos look fine here but 2 out of 4 of Hilmi's photo shows the photographer's lack of care in detail and composition.

that aside, Hilmi - keep up the good work. The above sharing is for you to learn and improve.

I think product photography is as hard as portrait photography? The position and lighting is very important, as well as the message to convey to audience. Like some shots client need spaces to put caption or wordings.

I think a good product photo should create a want/need immediately when audience sees it. But sometimes, photo tell lies too sweat.gif
