bonus???i dunno bout that....SLB dint mention bout it coz i also dint ask much bout salary....thanks anyway... nod.gif

yeah, allen's right.

btw, the bonus only after you "break out" i.e. after trainee phase ~8 mths for other divisions, not sure about western geco.

also, make sure it's usd4k not rm4k, otherwise too much risk for too little money.
*
what you mean by "break out"...traineee phase is around 8 month????really??????christine also get SLB but she based in office doing processing...from wat i heard from their seminar is rm5080 for freshie who based in home country....

Well, schlumberger always pay better, but the job is abit tough/demanding also. Years ago before the oil and gas booming, they have this notorious habit to sack people. Not anymore nowadays.
A friend of mine keep asking me to join them, but Im not that keen.
*
ICDeadPeople...where you working at now?????y ur not that keen to join SLB????do u mind to share????thanks

i work somewhere in the middle east, field engineer but not in western geco, one of the other services.

As for land operations, there's the "empty quarter" which everyone's talking about now in saudi, russia, middle asia (all the "*stan"s) and maybe the arctic soon...lol

basically, in your early career, like someone used to joke with me, you can imagine SLB like the army, just with better pay...you might even earn more than your manager...lol, but it's not that bad!

The good thing IMHO is that there's a fixed step programme, where they try to accelerate your career, giving you a list of what to achieve and a suggested timeline to do it, so you get promoted based on merit. The faster you finish the requisites, the faster you get promoted & most ppl don't wanna stay in the field for too long. Average time is 36-48 months before you get into office. Fastest I've seen is only 2 years.

Also, the international exposure is great, so far I've made good friends in all the continents & countless nationalities.

But since they are paying you to goto UAE to experience something new, I guess it's best for you to face it positively & then come back and ponder about it.
*
thankk zeusu....really know more bout this field now.... thumbup.gif

well, the structure's like several pyramids with ladders across them since SLB's made of alot of different services. At certain points of your career, you can get a "choice" to crossover to another division depending on your ability. "Choice" is subjective 'cos sometimes there are business needs which require your set of skills.

There's also a fast-track program for high potential employees, which they classify under a special group & these guys will be given alot of opportunities & all to groom them fast. And also, other career acceleration programs which identifies which area of the business critically needs manpower.

At the lower rungs of the ladder, there'll be alot of focus on technical training, etc and you'll reach a point where you need to go into operations management/R&D/production/sales & marketing/hr/learning centres/finance/hse/other technical roles or just choose to stay on in the field.

Once you've chosen the path you'd like to take, there'll be another pyramid again, and from here, it depends on how competitive/good you are to reach the top.

Anyway, internally, they have something like an interactive flowchart showing all the possible career paths, and you can choose what you would like to do & they'll try to fit it into your career path if possible. [this is in theory, i'm still too young in the company to know if it works]

Also, it functions as a tool to filter out those who don't see themselves suitable for any role and these guys will automatically cross over to other companies, etc.

They try to promote within since this business requires alot of knowledge about the field & our technology before one really knows what's happening.

[size=7]yea... another thing is that they seems to be more interested in the students recruited through the career fair etc... fast respond and reply from them. Last time i sent an online appication form to SLB but there's no respond at all.. it is after around 2 months later they came to our uni, and i just tried out their screening process at their booth before i got the chance for the next interviews. We also got the result on whether make it or not in quite a short time, around 1 weeks.. So,for the fresh grads, i reckon, its better to show up at their booth during career fair ... smile.gif
*
yea...that's how me n Christine went through the whole interview...better to go to career fair n start from there...from our experience..the 1st interview will be a 5 minute one to one interview by the recruiting manager...you will be given some small pieces of paper...then u just take any n open it up...you will see your question there....for my 1st interview..i get a quite funny question....that is...What will you do if your boss is a woman????

i say oh gosh(silently) icon_question.gif , i tell the recruiting manager...i never encounter a female boss before..i have been worked in Sapura Crest before as a trainee Geophysicist, but my boss is a man...well, i think there is nth much diff between a female boss n male boss..i still do my work as usual...then she start asking me bout my experience in SapuraCrest....thn i said bla bla bla brows.gif thn she said...YES, MR LING UR 5 MIN IS OVER...you can check your result at 5pm (i interviewed at 2pm ---> its fast)i say thank you...
you know wat, my num that day is 14 which mean "must die" in cantonese..i thought its a bad omen but stimes dont be too superstitious icon_rolleyes.gif
yea, i still rmb the 1st interview the recruiting manager stared at me like wanna swallow me into her stomach..but i keep cool alto im scary inside...so next time if u being interview by her just keep cool..just my 2 cents

well, 2nd interview (the next day which is my bday _/3/08) which is an interview they called it group activity...its very fun..u will be divided into groups..n will be given an assessment..complete it in a required time with limited resources..my advice is act fast n try to divide the job among ur group members..rmb some1 must be the time keeper..wat kind of assessment i cant tell you.. wink.gif wat i can tell you here is winner got prize which is a pen drive for each of the group member...there are 3 person that day who assess us --- walking around holding a board and a pen...(made me tension)....my group cant achieve the requirements..but still u should stand to ur point...but make sure its reasonable and realistic....

3rd day which is my 3rd interview and also christine bday thumbup.gif hehehe..she is younger than me one day....this interview consists of 3 interviewer for our day whcih consist of the recruiting manager (lady) and 2 Western Geco Guy...well, i go in..sit down...n they start the interview by asking me to introduce myself...i say bla bla bla...whn i come to say my parents both are hair dresser..n suddenly she stop me...HOW DO YOU THINK BOUT MY HAIR??? (erhhhhhh...how come she ask me this kind of questions which is nt related shakehead.gif )well, i said mmmm..ur hair is a bit dry and you need TREATMENT and a CLEANSING TREATMENT B4 APPLY NUTRITION TREATMENT...then those guys start laugh at her... laugh.gif thn she ask me what is my hobby??i said i like backpack, swimming, outdoor activities, playing guitar...STOP!!!she said....OK LING...I FEELS LIKE WANNA SING NOW..CAN YOU BRING YOUR GUITAR HERE N I SING???I WANT IT NOW!!!!!(i say to myself crazy man blush.gif )i blurred for a while and continue back....erm, sorry maam, this is an interview now..i dont think its appropriate to bring guitar here and sing...how bout next time if i joined Schlumberger, i bring it there n let you sing???(Luckily i can turn it back laugh.gif )thn she ask me wat i have done in my Industrial Training..I said bla bla bla....she asked me what have i done in UNI besides study..i say i joined USM Lifeguard Corps +++ bla bla bla..OK, LING..CAN U TELL ME MORE BOUT USM LG??thn i said bla bla bla again....n she ask me what kind of challenges i met so far..i give an example where I faced a big challenge in my Lifesaving Class as Instructor where i teach 4 levels of lifesaving...students come from non swimmer background...have to trained them...motivate them..nt physically but mentally as well.......bla bla bla..ok this Guy (chinese) from western Geco he ask me...LING..INSIDE HERESTATED UR BLACK BELT 2ND DAN...IS IT THE HIGHEST???i say nope..the highest is can reach up to 9th dan which is my master..thn this recruiting manager again provoke me with her questions...she asked me..IS IT MEANS THAT U CAN CHOP A BRICK??..i say yes maam, i need to chop 2 bricks without support to pass my 2nd DAN...she yelled!!!WOW!!!!LING, I WANNA C U DO CHOPPING...CHOP THE TABLE NOW..FAST!!!!CHOP THE TABLE NO!!!!!!(walao!!!i really bengang with her la)...but still, i keep cool and blurred for a minutes..dunno wat to ans...thn continue back....errrr..sorry maam, i cant perform it now as i dint go for training for long time and Im not goin to vandalise USM property too...(FUiiiiiiiiiiiiiii... rclxub.gif )then lastly she ask me, do u have anything to ask?????i say yes...suddenly this lady STOP me again....YOU CAN ONLY ASK 1 QUESTION COZ U TALK TOO MUCH(i say to myself..im goin to fail this interview ohmy.gif )..i ask is it this is the final interview..then they say no..if u pass this thn u need to go to kl to have ur final interview....thats all..

Final interview on 31 of March (kinda fast)....drive all the way to kl...go to rohas perkasa...wait the Asia pacific Manager to come..thn she (did i mention SHE again??? hmm.gif really a lot of lady manager...hehe laugh.gif )she show us a video on land operation..how land operation crew do theier job etc....n she ask..ladies...do u think that u can fit in into the environment where it is a male dominant world????yea..there are 3 gals who go to interview that day with me...im the only guy...seems lik Schlumberger like to hire lady....all the ladies keep smiling...thn this lady manager ask me what do u think??wats ur feedback from the video??i say..mm..it ok..far more better than wat im thinking (actually i tell lies...the work it tough... icon_question.gif )thn wait my turn to be interviewed....ask the questions similar to wat they ask in 3rd interview...but more on ur future prospect matter....last bout 20 mins..finish...drive back to penang again...home sweet home...

hope my interview experience can help those who are goin to Schlumberger interview...AU REVOIR

Not all students would prefer to have interview during career fair as there are many other potential companies as well.
I have seniors who decided not to go SLB interview coz it took long time and missed out other good companies where their interview shorter in duration.

Somehow, it should be a good experience as said to be among the tedious interview tongue.gif

And kevin1mil, how you get the chance to interview b4 the career fair? just by sending form online? share with us.
*
is it u asking me???i send in my resume during the PGCE conference which is held in KLCC Convention Centre......thn later they send me email ask me to go kl..but later sens again a letter ask me to wait for them to come to career fair.....yea there are alwaz other potential company as well...stimes its depends on ur perseverance..if u really want the company..i think u dun mind the waiting period as long as u can get in...

well OFS1 is basically like an orientation for SLB (1-2 weeks depending on location), you'll get to meet ppl from other locations & different departments, go for lectures about QHSE & SLB's training structure & resources, department managers or somebody quite high up will also be there to explain your career path & what you'll be doing, get your laptops, prepare your bank accounts (I'd recommend Citibank GEB, unless you can qualify for HSBC Premier/you have an HSBC account in Brunei/you're interested in offshore savings), sign the contract, do a driving test, (and for some, defensive driving school), etc.

Mine was done in KL, in Renaissance Hotel. Some ppl did theirs in Dubai/Abu Dhabi/Houston/Melun/Rio de Janeiro/etc; depends on where you are posted. It was really fun and it's a good opportunity to know ppl who'll be in your same location. Basically, giving you a good time, before they ship you out to the "wilderness"...lol

you need to have your own driving license by yourself, once you get that, it's just 5 mins to get the international license, which you can claim from them.

the driving test here is to see if you can drive safely following some safety standard, which if you pass, then you'll be qualified to drive SLB vehicles. Defensive driving is learning how not to lose control when the roads are slippery e.g. ice/mud/etc, sudden handbrakes, etc. Normally, they have this for the guys who goto the US for OFS-1 since in most US locations ppl can drive to the rigsite. I didn't go for this 'cos of last minute changes....sighz...so can't say much about it.

well, i just came back from abu dhabi, food can be a bit pricey though compared to M'sia, just be ready to spend upwards of 20 dirhams/meal.
*
wow!!!!!means ur company dint provide meals for u???so whn u go onshore...they provide meals for u????well..juat wanna know...my rotation is 6 weeks on shore...1 week office...2 weeks holiday.....6 weeks onshore--->they provide meal n accomodation rite???how bout 1 week office??do they provide accomodation n meal????thn 2 weeks holiday....let say we wanna stay back..do they provide accomodation???thanks ya zeusu

offshore, meals & accomodation are provided...in office, depends on location, if very remote, you'll be given food as well. Accomodation's provided as well. For your 1 week thing, I'm not too sure, never been to that, but for OFS-1 breakfast & lunch is provided, dinner you have to find yourself, but they give you something like 50dirhams a day.

On your days off, why would you wanna stay back? They'll pay your air ticket back home & you get a housing allowance too if i'm not wrong.

icic..thanks zeusu for ur info....much appreciated it......ic..is it they will pay us the flight ticket back for the 2 week holiday???yahoo..i tot they will nt provide the air ticket back msia...then it sounds good........thanks again zeusu..

I have a friend working in O&G... this is the story:

As a fresh grad, you earn RM2xxx
After one year, you earn RM3xxx

It is normal. After five years, you will definately earn 5 digits...

Bonus depending on the company. Some give 6 months (like Petronz), some give based on percentage of your annual income, it varies.

If you work offshore, you will be paid more. Additional half of your monthly salary, or around that. reason being:
- Its very risky. HIGH risk.
- when you fly using helicopter, if the heli crashes, you die
- if you use boat to transfer, if boat sinks, you die
- to transfer from boat to platform, you need to 'tarzan' to the other side. if you slip and your head knock the steel, you drown/die/bit by big fishes
- when you work on the platform, totally no life. there is astro, tv, food, gym etc. but imagine you work in an environment as big as your house in two weeks. you dont see anything out there, just the vast emptiness of the sea. its very stressful, and in some cases, people go nuts
- if you are a contractor, you have limit to call home. can only call 2-3 times a week (maybe)..
- if you are a contractor, if you are forced to work more than 4 weeks, you can go crazy
- no hang phone coverage
- only a few computer to surf the net. 100+ people using it
- if you work on a drilling rig, if there is a blowout, you die

and finally
- if you work too hard and go back home less, your gf find other guy, leave you, you die

hahaha.

so why work with o&g? cuz they pay good? is that your justification of a good job?

think again.

Hi Kevin & Christine,

Yes - I am with BH INTEQ. LWD field engineer based in Qatar, on rotational. Life's good, but USD depreciation affected nearly everyone in this region dealing with Oil & Gas! I call it involuntary pay cut... Sigh...

Well, soon you both will join the ranks in SLB, and I can only wish you both the best. Oh yeah, safety driving courses, offshore safety and helicopter emergency training - you'll love those things...

I am getting so weary of tomorrow's prospect, rigging down...

Thn, the HR Ass. Recruiter told me that she already send my details to the Western Geco DP segment which I will be based in office n will become Christine85 colleague IF AND ONLY IF I PASS THE FINAL INTERVIEW AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! Now waiting for my Final Interview confirmation mail again and they MEAN it the FINAL INTERVIEW......I've a bad day!!!!dun like to be based in office...dull life plus lower salary....Hope i can pass the final interview or is it their excuse to ask me to go for the final interview n later tell me that im failed???really sad and disappointed......

Job Title : Process Eng
Job Desciption : Offshore Design Consultant
Years spent in company : Nil (Fresh)
Company : Somewhere along Jalan Tun Razak
Industry : Oil & gas
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Exec
Experience before joining : Nil (Fresh)
salary : RM 2.4k
Benefits: Nothing much except for relatively more annual leaves

Hey i was wondering whether this is the standard salary for O&G industry for fresh grad now. Are there better companies that provide much better pay for fresh grad?

I've got first class from overseas uni in my CV, but so far i don't think there's any difference than other workers who came in without a good degree.

I know Aker Kvaner has reviewed their salary to 2.5k, but still it's not alot.

I'm thinking of changing job right now bcoz many ppl in my department are leaving. Any advice for me as in where I should go?

Does other comp like Technip, RNZ, Ranhill Worley, Shell, Petronas or Schlumberger offer better for fresh grad?
(Btw I've read some horror experience on working with Schlumberger and Petronas, so I might rule it out for now)
