For Petronas and other major OnG players, there's not much impact. They just suspend/delay most deep water projects. Some MNC service companies, e.g baker & weatherford have reported freezing new employment earlier this month.

There are a handful of companies out there requires engineering background. Its best that you study each OnG company and determine how your engineering background can put into good use for the company.

Ask yourself, do you wish to work under upstream or downstream? Do some studies. Most of the answers are already in this thread

Your question is too generic. Its like seeking for employment.

* FYI most companies are freezing up new employment.

Just try. You will never know until you try. Most MNC and OnG practice equal opportunity.

if the reserves are empty, they'll just explore more.

you know that wildcat exploration will cost billions and I won't be surprised if the price of petrol per litre becomes RM100/L

Well if things are coming cheap now, I would take the opportunity to explore more wells. If demand is lower than production, AKA cheap petrol, I will just suspend the well and regulate the production down to the market demand. Either way, petrol price will slowly crumble back.

Reserve depletion is something inevitable. Most OnG companies have managed to ensure the longevity of the reserve. They do EOR to ensure more oil can be recovered and no wastage has been left behind.

Deepsea exploration is considerably costly as opposed to surface. Well if surface has run out of reserve, everyone will start finding oil in the deep ocean. By then petrol price would definitely go higher.

Scientist had discovered ways to reduce the dependency of crude oil. They have introduced renewable energy, biofuel and even converting waste into oil. Hence, there is nothing to worry about. There will always be plan B.

Can.. register as a student. Just need to present your student ID if not mistaken. Anyway, it's a good exhibition. Some exhibitor was good enough to give free first aid kits and mugs.

Anyhow its great to explore new technology exhibited in the exhibition.

That's because Shell brunei monopoly most of the field. They're earning big yet they still contribute back to the nation.

I know they're shaping up the organization since July, but I didn't expect a cut in manpower.

Do you mean by only current reserve & without new exploration, the current well can sustain till 2013?

Wow, if that's not the case, then no point spending $$ on deepwater exploration.

If you're talking about earlier this year till 3rd quarter, yes. Some projects came into halt as crude oil prices were low. I'd even seen drilling engineers sitting on their desk praying for new offshore job. Now some of the projects are slowly pacing up. SM & GM are probably talking about the annual achievement correct me if I'm wrong. E&P team should know better on the condition of our oil reserves.

Everyone is talking about alternative source of energy. If you're thinking hybrid is the next big thing, then you're wrong. Look back on the whole vehicle. See which type of energy source is it generating power from. It will only run on electric current when it's cruising. When there is demand on power, the combustion engine will fire up. To me the best engine to work with is diesel engine. Why? your homegrown vegetable oil mixed with some caustic soda can produce diesel fuel. Plus, there is no loss in power.

Nope. Not laughing. Its just that the statement, " by 2013, M'sia would be a net importer" somewhat contradicts current O&G developments locally, what with the existing PSCs, deepwater development for Gamusut Kakap and Malikai in Sabah (not to mention Ambalat, should they are able to resolve the issue) and the vast field in JDA that so far, only few platforms had come to life over there. And to think of it, should M'sian reserve is really at critical level, why would Talisman, Murphy, Nippon, etc would even bother to invest and be tied to at 20 yrs PSC with Petronas in the 1st place.

And should that time (100% depletion) comes in the future, it wont just be about the price at the petrol stations, M'sia would lose substantial funding from Petronas in dividend and taxes that are currently used for.....

I always thought it was Gumusut Kakap sweat.gif . Anyway, good point there, even if we're running out of resource, Petronas will still have foreign projects to earn profits from. E.g Sudan, Africa, vietnam/myanmar, Iran, turkey etc.
