QUOTE(borneosailor @ Nov 27 2008, 03:00 PM)
hi guys.
i posted a question here some time ago, but i x get any reply, so im asking again.
im from a marine engineering background and i've worked 3 years with MISC bhd and a year (currently)with AP Moller Maersk Ltd.
im still in a junior rank, so my current basic is usd1900+ allowance usd(-+)500 .

my job has nothing to do with OnG, but i am REALLY keen into entering the OnG field, as i heard u OnG make money triplefold more than me.

do OnG companies employ marine engineers for their oilrig/upstream operations?? or maybe their services companies???

i have heard that supply/accomodation vessels operate at oilrigs. anyone can tell me what these vessels do there??

also, where's the cheapest place to undergo huet/boset training in malaysia??? im from sabah.

Added on November 27, 2008, 3:38 pmi was going through rigzone.com website, and i was wondering, what does ''$80k to $95K DOE'' mean???

Added on November 27, 2008, 3:43 pmwhat does DV DP mean??? what does DP DSV mean???

My reply last time: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=21427395

DP DSV means Dynamic Positioning Diving Support Vessel.

Destroyer,

I think your experience will be weigh a lot in your supposedly next job. Working on a vessel and on a platform is almost the same. You will be dealing with motors, electrical systems, instruments, power generation, desalination plant and many more. There will probably be more safety procedures on the platform.

Why don't you consider working on a survey vessel, seismic vessel or a drilling rig? The pay is better and you get more time off, unlike your sea-going vessel.

So, you want to be a diver then. It's true that you can earn a lot of money in this field, because the risk is so high. The last I heard, a freelance diver can get more than USD500/day. Not sure about now, might be more.

Anyway, before you can do any diving job, you need to get a service ticket. Depending on what you do, each type of job requires different ticket. As far as I know, only TWI in Pattaya offer these kind of underwater courses. Try to contact them if you need more info.

Diver can get very high pay without having a lot experience, because of the nature of the job.

On the other hand, a specialist with many years of experience, and does only work coordination and trouble-shooting can get good money.

Those team leader / superintendent / supervisor MUST have experience or else workers will BS them all the time. The supervisor will take all the sh*t from the company if something went wrong. That's why they are getting higher pay and can't always put the blame on others.

People without technical knowledge can be a project / job coordinator. Booking tickets, decide who is available for job, speak to the client and etc.

I think salary wise, it's considered good for a fresh graduate. SAR 1=MYR 1.

A quick check on cost of living index, the capital of Saudi is placed lower than KL. Plus you get 28 days annual, return flight ticket, overtime pay and contractual bonus. It's not an offer you get everyday now in Malaysia.

PhD qualified corrosion engineer, with c.a. 5 yrs overseas experience in materials and Oil & Gas, what kind of prospect and salary I can expect in Malaysia?

Any thought would be great! thank you
*
My guess, more than RM 10k with consulting firm or oil operator. You get more if you have NACE qualifications.

What about those rig drilling companies?

The current company I am working with build rigs for people like Ensco, Seadrill, DDI, Skie Drilling. But I've never heard of these companies in Malaysia. Considering them as I might want to come back to Msia to work instead of continuing in Sg.
*
I think Seadrill has an office in Malaysia, under the name Tioman Drilling Company.

hi...
i have a question here. how do we check whether the company is a legal company in UK? Cause my bf get a offer from UK in oil and gas company. But not sure whether it is a legal company or not. The company have website : http://www.gallerygroup-uk.com/..
*
Perhaps you can contact the British Embassy for more information on this company. The website looks a bit "simple" for such a large corporation. Is the offer your bf got too good to be true?

got another question here..let say if i'm workin wif mmhe in the marine conversion dpt for 2 years as project eng..wud dis help me in applyin for upstream services comp out there? dats my target actually..any opinion?

I guess only an HR manager from one of those service companies can give you a straight forward answer.

My personal opinion, your chances of getting into those companies are higher compare to those without any OnG background at all. Use the two years you have with MMHE to learn as much as possible, and impress your interviewers later.

Hi All,

I'm currently working in an service company. I'm satisfy with the working environment and the company's role in this industry. I also feel that it's a good company that can provide knowledge and career advancement in oil n gas.
However, the jobscope that I'm doing is not what I'm into, not much technical and 99% staying in office.

I have a degree in Chemistry and would really wanna work in technical/application related responsibilities. Any ideas/suggestion that i could go for?? Drilling fluids or Oilfield Chemicals perhaps?
Also, anyone here have any info on vacancy or service company hiring this position?

Any Chemistry graduates here working in service company?

Your comment/responds will greatly appreciated

Try MI-Swaco, LINK. A big chemical supplier for the OnG industry.

anyone could enlightened me on what does an electrical and instrumentation engineer does?

normally, on interviews, what sort of questions will be asked?

thanks in advance
*
Commissioning, maintaining and trouble shooting of instrumentation systems, depends on the company you work for.

If you have knowledge on Modbus, PLCs, SCADAs, OPC, then you stand a better chance.

Hi new~b0y,

If working for consultant firm like rnz, ranhill? what are their job scope? always go offshore or not? hows the frequency of going offshore for work?

thanks bro..
*
I'm not so sure, I haven't worked work for consulting firm before. But I believe the scope of work will be similar to those consulting firms in the construction sector. The difference is the the clients are now the oil operators and they have a much higher budget and put more emphasis on safety.

Offshore wise, I think it will less frequent compare to most service companies. Perhaps once every two months or even less, depending on which department you work in.

Wanna asking if somebody knows an opportunity working as Navigation / Survey Engineer?? I think it's also a part of oil n gas industry. Hopefully can share with me

There are a few companies you can apply in Malaysia, as far as I know, but I can't guarantee that there are vacancies in those companies at the moment. You can try TLGH, Offshore Works, Orogenic GeoExpro, Fugro Survey and Western Geco.

The job scope is I will spent 30 days offshore and 2 weeks onshore and mostly is coordination of offshore project similar to field engineer. Hesitate to get this job because I never been to offshore before and not sure I can adept to the sea life. What do you think?Btw, my background is chemical engineering
*
Two weeks in the office or two weeks at home?

Depends on which and what kind of offshore installation you go to. If you're getting everything is TV, telephone, internet and good food offshore, spending 4 weeks away is not too bad.
