vincent. ur company no epf and no socso? Hmmm.. u sure u engaged in an O&G company? Or maybe it's one of petronas's contractors? no way it can be a shell contractor cos shell ensures that their contractors take care of the worker's welfare. I need to check the regulations regarding employment without socso and without epf cant remember >.< But from what I know its a must for socso and epf in any malaysian based company who hires locals. You can clarify this with EPF themselves.

Anyone knows any upcoming vacant for as HSE coordinator or HSE officer? Only has 3 years oil and gas experience in the same field. Anybody can help?

Are you looking for a permanent job or contract? DO you have your green book already? Also 3 yrs exp in doing what HSE? Marine? Plant TA? etc? there are actually quite a number of Plant TA's happening this next few months and i'm sure you will be able to apply for a position at any plant. It's a matter of timing and contacts. Ask around and find out. Ask for Marine HSE, well Petra and Sapura Crest was awarded a 5 yr contract with shell and Sapura's PMT is shaky but they're looking for people in mgmt positions now, NO harm in trying. as for Petra, well they're taking in experienced Marine hse personnel.

Final, wat r the important things i shud look for in the contract's terms?

For contracted staff, you are basically a freelancer, contracted staff get paid higher than permanent. Freelancers like myself are in High demand due to the level of professionalism we bring to the job. Also as a freelancer we HAVE to perform to get good results and recommendation for our next job.

Yes it's true. I myself am directly in the O&G business recently, although I grw up in the Oil Town but moved back to KL after I finished school etc. Tried to avoid getting into the O&G line but in the end also got pulled back in. Overall, I would have to say its about the attitude of the person, the willingness to learn, the willingness to be independant and the drive of the person that make him/her valuable to a company and then only you start raking in the dollars. Overall, My direct exp in O&G started just a few years ago, decided to take a paycut from my previous profession and only after 1 yr of earning only 2k a month, (9 months to be exact) I got offered a 5 figure income and a mgmt position. Took it and enjoyed every moment of it. Now currently on another project with slightly lower income but less working hours although the income can be increased if i have to go offshore but try not to lor. Its not about the money now, its about what I can do from here. Remember just a single drop will create a ripple that spans till the edge of the lake.

SO please gather your experience, then judge yourself how uch you think you are worth. I believe one cannot demand until one is retired and the industry knows you well enough. Or maybe I'm just lucky to have come from a line of O&G family. who knows. I am my own man I make my own waves. And trust me the more ppl hate me the more I know i'm doing my job. I step on people's feet to wake them up. hehehe

Radiation Safety Officer, wun be a spelled out in the websites. You need to have contacts to know if the position is available. In O&G we tend to help each other or rather help our friends to get jobs. It's a close knit community. For that kind of post, i would suggest joining as a HSE officer / HSE advisor first ( depending on your qualification ) then once slowly branch out to specialise.

Oh and as for Radiation HSE officers, you would need to basically look for NTD companies who do radiography, though not many are around but there might be a chance to get into that position however I highly doubt it. I know a few major players in the NTD industry but i've yet to meet a radiation hse officer.

i'm a nuclear science student
we learn about basic NDT..
very hard to find NDT companies in malaysia
can u tell me more about HSE officer?
*
Very hard cos u're not looking in the right places. There are various types of NDT, conventional and non-conventional practised here. I'm not in NDT but i know just enough. You should know more than me actually.

One of the big players is velosi, go search them up on the net. They're public listed in the UK and all that BUT they'er essentially a training ground for those in the NDT game in Malaysia.

Oceancare is also another NDT company and so is PNR Inspections, etc. there's LOADS of em out there.

Is offshore that lucrative? Seriously, you guys ( those in chemical backgroud, etc) should look into chemical plants. i.e. ON shore! u'd be suprised how much yuo may get. Earning big $$ offshore is now a myth is no0t as high as you may imagine. I mean I work onshore and offshore and I find that Onshore i get more but then again, it's due to responsibility. Offshore the only extra is the offshore allowance which aint that much over time.

LOADS of them are out there. Just jump in and join lor. But you must know one thing about the OnG community, we might be a huge industry but we are a small community, hence most ppl in OnG know each other before some got into it, in other words, go rub shoulders with some OnG ppl and get them to pull you in. hehehe

OK so many pages came and went i'll try to remember to reply what i can. SOmeone asked about Talisman? if got offer, then GO grab it. It's one of the main contractors around that actually pays well. However, it also depends on which line u're getting in.

Technip : also a good company, they provide a lot of training. You will find that you will stay in Technip for a long time as you will grow very comfortable in it.

Shell : Which shell? SSB? SSPC? or Shell Trading? They make a difference. I'm sitting on contractor side as I like doing projects and not so keen on a permanent position. I find it more challenging plus the money is damn good. lol. Currently, am contemplating which company to join as I too was offered by SSB but not too keen on a permanent position. 3 main-cons have offered me an offer mroe attractive than shell so i'm just weighing my options now. Oh btw, there's still 2 more years left in this current contract i'm doing.

If anyone is interested in getting into O&G ( as a fresh grad but the community prefer experienced ppl) do let me know what line u're in, be it HSE, ENG, etc. I get an average of 3-5 e-mails a week from friends and companies requesting me to recommend ppl for contract jobs, so if u're really interested to work short term, i.e. 3-12 months project let me know. Especially Mariners as they're in great demand.

Actually ICdeadpeople is right talisman is an operator, but like newboy said, everyone's a contractor to me, makes no difference really as I'm not bothered about the benefits etc, for me its just I perform the task assigned as long as u meet my price. So heck in the end I also macam contractor! lolx

you're a leagal advisor and you do not know of how the world works? Come on, it's not like O&G is a new industry..

Destroyer : yes, a mariner is a seafarer. there is an opening for a class 1 foreign going master and also a class one foreign going engineer. i.e. marine captain and chief engineer. However, experience in support vessels is essential but not neccessary. So if u'ev worked on a workboat before your chances are high. There is also an opening for a Marine HSE Coordinator and a Marine Safety officer. I emphasize marine cos having sailing experience helps a lot. SO if you have friends who have perhaps done their sea time as a cadet but dun wanna continue, get them to buzz me and I'll ask them to take up a HSE course and well the future would look much brighter.

You wanna sail or you wanna be on shore - it's their pick. If they decide to sail then stay at sea, if offshore they dun have anything related to sailing which they can use on any other job except sailing. For marine HSE the core is HSE not marine. The sailnig experience is only used as a leverage to get their foot in.

And I dun think fresh dip grads gets USD2200 monthly as on board a vessel, it does not matter what qualification u had from shore, everyone starts from the bottom i.e. a Cadet. ur friends are BS-ing you man lol.
For marine captains on board the salary range is between USD250 - USD500 a day. it's less than half of the global rates but it all depends on the fellow. If he wants to do it or not, that's why we have captains from Myanmar and indonesia filling in the gaps out here in offshore world.

As for the course, well go attend NIOSH, and like any other career, ur'e new to the damn field dun expect much. I had one uni grad, well actually a masters in chemistry or something like that who just toko a NIOSH course ( safety officer course) and demanded 10k month. lol. I asked him to come in for interview then fired the living daylights out of him. cos he could not answer questions pertaining to HSE but instead tried to outsmart me with his knowledge of chemistry lol. I told him what he knows about chemistry has no relevance to the work in HSE. SO basically i told him to take his masters in chemistry and stick it where the sun dun shine if he wants to get into HSE lol.

yeah i'm evil I know but we dun need smart alecs and ppl who demand unless they can prove themselves. SO freshies, be careful if you find someone like me lol, actually theyre lots of guys like me in our world. lolx.

bro, u gotta get ur license before you can even try to touch usd2.2k. As a cadet u're getting jack shit if u asked me. I used to get USD 700 as a basic and then we had cadet allowances which varies from month to month depending on the chief mate and the vessel, which usually starts from a min of USD 250 up to USD 500 a month extra. But then again , that was when sea time for cadet training was 24months unlike now which I heard is only 12 months? crap man no wonder the quality of masters we're getting here are BAD!. I've seen masters and chief mates who cant even plan a proper passage!! >.< and I wonder how the heck these guys get their tickets!?

Overall the master's i've seen here that are really bad are local trade licensed. Which makes me wonder WTF the marine dept is doing, churning out tickets to people like that.

As for the sea time 24 months WAS the required time for Foreign Going license for the Singapore Marine Dept. And it used to be the same for Malaysian marine Dept as well but during my final few months on board I heard that they shortened it to 20 month sea time, and I guess now i'ts even worse! only 12 months! >< nobody will learn much in 12 months seriously, I was on board Container vessels and tankers, and I had a chance to sail on one 30 yr old container vessel and a massive 5,400 TEU container vessel, Oh plus I was also on a VLCC! and managed to go alongside a ULCC and maan it was HUGE!!!! All this I did while sailing as a cadet. SO 12 months? really not enough time to experience all one can experience as during cadet time is our honey moon time! lolx

Now i'm a kuli oni. Marnie HSE Specialist. Got sucked back in, into the marine line after I left it like YEARS ago. But it is an advantage for me now as there is a need for Marine HSE but lack of marine personnel who can run HSE effectively. I guess i'm lucky cos after i left the marine line, I ventured into HSE and loved HSE so much until this offer came, I ws reluctant but well the offer wasnt that bad so I grabbed it after I finished my last contract ( I freelance btw) SO now this is like the longest contract 3 +2 yrs and it's so relaxing lol. Plus I get to argue with HSE ppl who do not know much about marine and argue with marine ppl who do not know much about HSE lolx. I guess i fill the gap? lolx

for those started from deck side, i've found it easier for them to entr HSE coz i've search around and found that most marine HSE superintendent requires Class 1 deck officer COC. can those from engine side also join HSE? mind elaborating more about it since quite curious about it.
Not true, it's a very niche thing so requirements are not too strict as there is a real shortage for Marine HSE. For example, here in Miri the majority of plp who are in Marine HSE are basically ppl who have never gone to sea or those who have been to sea but HSE is not their core. Lucky for me I'm balanced? lolx. I used to sail but HSE is my strong point thus I can relate to the mariners on board. Oh plus I LOVE to argue a LOT lolx.

Preference is from Deck side as in HSE you know the law and can churn out reports like breathing, yeah HSE is all about documentation and reports lolx. And those from Deck I feel has exposure to reporting or rather story writing skills compared to engine side as on the engine side its all about numbers and not much story telling. ALthough I may be wrong. For surveyors such as Class Surveyors they prefer Engineers as it is very techincal but I say it aint that hard cos Deck side we have to know about the engine too and a chief engineer doesnt need to know about navigation.

I'm neither from BP nor Shell, they hardly hire freelancers direct, I'm sitting on the contractor side, but behave like i'm on client side, cos I can! hahaha.

Hmm. salaries I would have to say while sailing cos no.1 it's a hazardous job dude, but there we work like hell and party like hell. No politics and all that crap. In the office well, i get to go home after office hours and go play games lah lol. And while on shore i get to go partying and picking up hot nurses! lolx

Actually, global rate for Master ( Foreign Going License ) is USD 1k if USD500 a day kene con lah lolx.

Also FMC would be a better platform to join international companies or rather for a chance to be placed overseas and also to get picked up by companies not operating in Malaysia. Ranhill, there's more local jobs.

For Sapura Crest, make sure the contract you sign is under sapura crest instead of TLG, But more likely than most you will get a contract to sign with TLG.TLG and TLO are learning / training grounds for Crest and other main cons.

nah skin colour doesnt play that much of a role unless its to join a small company, but the senior mariners know each other thus can jack their own rates. heck my dad is a retiree and on occasion if he wants to go out for a bit he gets between usd 1k - usd 1.5k a day. Cos no.1 his name is very welcomed in the industry and confirm to get approval, he was the head of marine in Shell anyways in his heyday. and Now i'm in his shadow.. haiz more than 10 yrs he left shell and still ppl expect to be like him but sorry lah I made it very clear from the beginning, i'm not like him, i aint no goody two shoes I'm evil and I swear like no tomorrow lolx. I guess some ppl get it now. lol
