I've been researching quite a bit, and I just cannot find anybody saying that xenon projector is capable of projecting 1.43:1, regardless if the screen size is 1.43:1 or not. In fact, the Dunkirk Format Guide even says under Imax Xenon "Please be aware - 'Traditional' 1.43:1 aspect ratio Imax theaters without Imax laser or 70mm imax film projection will present the film on xenon. The xenon system will not be able to fill the full height of the screen."

I don't think there is anywhere in Malaysia where we can get the proper Oppenheimer experience.

I can't decide which is better - Dual Xenon vs Single Laser biggrin.gif

Laser should be better.
I have compared Laser vs Xenon, Laser trumps all.
But the screen size tho, quite small.

Tapi nak buat macam mana, IOI City Mall is the only IMAX that have Laser.
I do hope Pavilion Bukit Jalil will be the next one to get it.

This list is directly from IMAX.
It seems no IMAX Theatre around MY including TH and SG that does show Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm.
Kalau dekat pun is Aussie.

Sunway Velocity IMAX is the largest in Malaysia, while also being the tallest at 1.33:1 aspect ratio (the screen however should only display at 1.9:1 as the Xenon projector can't do 1.43:1). It's a good hall but the AC is slightly audible, so it can be softly heard during quiet scenes in a film. It also uses the old dual xenon projector and not laser, so the image clarity is questionable especially since it is projecting on that very large screen, though honestly, it's not going to be that noticeable for casual viewers and you will still have a great viewing experience.

The biggest negative is definitely the seating arrangement (image can be found in post #279) where the good, center seats are indulge couple/twin seats which are also priced very expensively (RM 40 per person, total RM 80). I only recommend Velocity IMAX for people with movie partners and Maybank cards as Fridays and weekends usually have discounts (Should be RM60 but currently checking the Oppenheimer seats there and there's no promotion/discounts likely cause it's premier week).

If you do want to go there, you should bring a partner and be able to swallow that indulge tag-on price, but other than that, it's a great hall.

Hi, I'm planning to watch MI7 at Sunway Velocity IMAX. Since we have 3 persons so couldn't choose the couple seats, do you recommend the middle F row or the slightly sideway G/H rows? Thanks!

I already asked them since last month, they confirm it is IMAX in there, but one thing they never confirm, is it Laser or Xenon?
I keep bugging them but they won't say anything.
Susah macam ni TGV.
I prefer TGV than GSC because of the seats.
TGV seats comfort is way better than any GSC halls.
Heck even IMAX GSC halls seats is no match with Pavilion Bukit Jalil Deluxe+ halls.

Ok thanks for the reply.
But one thing matter, IMAX Laser just change my perception towards Xenon projectors.
Xenon projectors suck.
I recently watch a movie at GSC Palm Mall and it is just bad in terms of picture quality.
Bila dah tengok Laser, suddenly all normal halls picture quality is not up to my expectations.
The only saving grace for those normal halls are the seats in TGV.

Laser will look better no matter what, hence GSC Big is better image wise than majority of Malaysia's IMAX right now aside from screen size because of the Barca 4k laser. However, I will say I-City's IMAX although Xenon projector is still a fantastic experience because it is the largest 1.9:1 (it's slightly taller but very close enough) screen in Malaysia. It's the 2nd behind Velocity in size, but the seats are comfy, the hall and the cinema chain itself looks very cantik/high class. The IMAX hall itself is very dark so there won't be any distracting lights (1U's keluar sign for example lol).

Honestly, it comes down to what you want. You want large screens? Then from biggest to smallest, Velocity, I-City then 1U IMAX. Honestly, imo Xenon 2k still looks fine to me, the screen size overtakes the slight negativity in image quality.

I recommend seats above row F as you will need to uncomfortably lean your head backwards to properly encompass the movie's image in your peripheral view. The downsides of the sides of row G and above, especially if you sit near to the middle of the hall is that the seat indicator lights on the floor steps which can be distracting when viewing the screen/film. However, this is less distracting and uncomfortable than row F. I recommend row H, J and above as G has those fences/half walls in front of them, which may block some portion of the screen.

Lol. I think animated films still look good in normal halls (watched Across The Spider-verse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish at GSC and TGV). Live-action movies though, yeah kinda ooof.

IOI City Mall Wing 2 GSC will open a Big hall with DA soon. Great alternative to IMAX Laser honestly mainly for pricing.

Ok since IMAX Central iCity have the best IMAX, which I really agree.
Even the Deluxe halls is just amazing.
The screen and sound system is just nice.

Which is the best seat based on the current condition?
Thinking to switch my target from Sunway Velocity to Central iCity.

I'll be traveling from East Coast to see Interstellar in September (the GSC event one). I don't think I care too much about xenon vs laser thing but I'm looking for big screen with nice sound system because Interstellar.

Anyone can help with recommendation?

This is my benchmark screen size (Auckland IMAX):

I love to sit up front, and my favorite row is row G. Fills up your whole peripheral vision and close to the speaker in front to feel the bass.

Though some people might feel it's a bit too near (you might need to move your eyes around a bit to see the whole screen), but it's how I like it, to feel immersed!

So far GSC has not announced whether Interstellar will be re-released in IMAX, but if you dont care too much about Xenon and Laser (visual clarity), Central i-City is the best choice for screen size and sound system.
