Asus Laptop N56VZ-3088V
Intel Core i5-3210M 2.5 GHz (Turbo Boost 3.1GHz)
15.6" HD LED Screen
4GB RAM DDR3 (MAX 16GB) - ADDED 4GB RAM to TOTAL 8GB RAM
750GB SATA2 HDD
NVDIA GT 650M 2GB DDR3
DVD +/- RW Dual Layer
Windows 7 Premium 64Bit

Yes, it will be able to play Dota 2 and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit at Ultra settings without lag.

I just watched a benchmark video of Nvidia Geforce GT650M in Youtube several days ago. GT650M can play Battlefield 3 at 1920x1080 Full HD resolution. 30FPS on HIGH SETTINGS. 40FPS on MEDIUM SETTINGS. FPS is the frame rate per second, 30 FPS is the minimum playable frame rate.

Which means you can easily play Dota 2 on Full HD resolution on 60 FPS if you're getting the Full HD 1920x1080 and BluRay one. If you're getting the 1366x768, then you can play most games at high settings on that resolution.

But don't expect it to play The Witcher 2, Crysis 3 + High Tesselation DX11 extra texture, Batman Arkham City on ultra settings...sure cannot..

If I'm not mistaken, 1366x768 is 16:9 ratio.

You can't set it to 16:10 resolution like 1440×900 , 1680×1050, 1920×1200. Because the max resolution supported is 1366x768.

You can do that, but you'll lose some fps.

Might as well just use your existing laptop screen.

There will be more lag in gaming due to lower FPS.

What is the reason of you buying the laptop? Why not a desktop?

You can't expect top end graphics settings on laptops for the budget you're going for and honestly, you're going to study no? Just go for a decent mid-end laptop (N-series, ala your choice comes to mind) and settle for mid-high settings.

In two years, you'll probably upgrade your laptop anyway so the thumb rule is not to overcommit on a laptop. Save the moolah for a desktop which you can always courier back to your hometown when you finish college (or heck, just disassemble it and bring it with you)

Do you actually need mobility? If not, i advise you not to get a laptop for gaming. Unless you have enough money for a proper gaming laptop that will be able to take almost all the games very well.

Getting a multimedia laptop, like N56V that you are buying, you wont be getting the visual enjoyment that you are looking for. Then, multimedia laptop is not designed for gaming for hours or long term due to the need to be lighter and thinner. On the other hand, a desktop will guarantee the best visuals and performance with half the price of the laptop. In the end, you could even buy 2 desktops to put at your home and college.
