If you wanna say the light dim after screen lock, then yes. However, I wont go as far as saying rendering it completely useless. Perhaps would be hard to see under bright sunlight, but indoor is perfectly okay. Not sure why the black wont dim nor do I have a black unit to test. Mine is white.
