Went to Lowyat yesterday to check out laptops. I must say that if you are a gamer (maybe not a heavy one) and want the best bang for buck, then go for Lenovo G480. i5, 6 cell battery, 2.5ghz for only RM1750. Really worth it.

QUOTE(RedSiglap56 @ Oct 15 2012, 05:43 PM) Good evening, My requirements are as follows : Brand : anything except Acer Budget : around 3K Usage : surfing, live streaming of sports events e.g. BPL, IAAF; online videos and movies, online music (watching & downloading), online stocks and other financial applications Screen : around 15" I'm not tech savvy and used the laptop for work previously; now retired and doing own agency work. Would greatly appreciate your advice and recommendation, including where I can go to get good deals. Thanks very much! ASUS N56 or Lenovo Y480/580. Are you from Siglap, SG?

When I was at LowYat, one of the sales man said that I should get an i5 at least and some graphic card so that I can use the laptop for many years.
But in my case, I only use it for work (MS Excel and Word) and surfing (reading news and Youtube) and sometimes HD football matches that I missed.
So I basically won't turn into a gamer overnight or next year or anytime in the near future. 1) So I don't really need a high spec laptop right since my tasks doesn't require high specs. I don't mind spending a bit more for an i5 but I seriously don't need a high spec graphic card right since I don't play games at all.
2) A high spec graphic card is a must for video games but does it have any influence in the smoothness in the running of the laptop? According to another sales man, a low spec graphic card will result the laptop in lagging when watching HD movies. Is that true?
Correct me If Im wrong.
Thanks

Why do some 15.6 inch laptops with numpad at the side and some don't?
I personally do use numbers a lot but I'd rather use a USB powered numpad and get a better lay out keyboard rather than a off centre trackpad and keyboard.
And is there an SSD slot (as an aftermarket) in every laptop or only some?
Thanks
