well like i mentioned, depends on the value of it. if no need dedicated can go all the way down to i3 (or even dual core) also np, cos in my experience nowadays any cpu good enough edy. just adjust on batt life, quality etc.

if no gaming at all, Asus Vivobook X202 is nice at RM15++. touchscreen, i3, win8, 11.6" @ 1366x768 which is very acceptable (actually already bought one for my gf.. if only i read the Asus thread...  rclxub.gif ). hell i used AMDe450 before, bought Samsung for less then RM1k, ok for old gaming like Company of Heroes etc no complain.

if gaming, then the problem (and price) arises lol haha. dilemma. rm2k maybe the sweet spot, but then again im in the buying mood so...  blush.gif maybe wait for pc fair later on dec

Your problem is a common one blush.gif
Brands seems to see FHD as an high end thingy, and that's why you will only see FHD with high end CPU, or business class, or ultrabook. Pick your poison laugh.gif

Don't expect Thinkpad built quality in ideapad  sweat.gif
Thinkpad, if you talk about the T / W series, has internal roll cage, and will withstand lots of abuse. (I had drop a T410 4 ft onto the floor, bang on the keyboard of T420 that sent the whole laptop jumping (after a shitty tele-con) and no problemo smile.gif. Spill resistant keyboard. Trackball (the red colour thing). Matte screen. Backward compatible ports.

For ideapad, you normally get better speakers (but you will be better off with dedicated desktop speakers), more game-oriented GPU and Glossy screen. And I am a lot more gentle with my Y580  laugh.gif

If your concern is built-in ventilation, look at Asus G series or Alienware. But most gamers use cooling pad or other ingenious solutions smile.gif

Inspiron 14SE is quite a good laptop for the price (~RM2k).
GPU is ok for light gaming. Speakers are better than run-of-the-mill variants. Keyboard are nice. Built quality is above average for consumer class laptop. And Dell warranty is good. Extend to 3 yr onsite if you can.

Negative - depend on your requirement, actually smile.gif
If you are a heavy gamer, then the GPU is not the best. If you want FHD screen, not available. If you want light weight, you better off with ultra-book. If you are business class user (need backward compatible ports, docking), not available.

nexus2238 is more towards hardcore gaming rigs laugh.gif
The GT640M is capable of mid-level gaming, hell its even better than the GT555m in my M14x already laugh.gif
And I have no problems playing NFS Most Wanted at near max settings nod.gif

Blame it on the lowest common denominator effect sweat.gif As manufacturers race to push cost / price down, screen quality inadvertably is usually the first to go. It's easier to sell on CPU spec, GPU spec, RAM size, HDD size for the less initiated tongue.gif

Sorry, sorry. Due to games I played when I was in my teens, I have always associated strategy / CRPG games as light gaming (call me weird blush.gif ), and FPS games as heavy laugh.gif
So as far as a GPU could handle the most graphic intensive CRPG (I think Skyrim for 2011, Witcher 2 is more action RPG) reasonably, I will think it can handle light gaming doh.gif
Younger people will associate "light gaming" with facebook games, minecraft ... generation gap sweat.gif

Hi guys,

Need your help for recommendation for new laptop. The criteria;

- Price: <RM3000
- OS: WIN8
-Harddisk: If possible SSD. I dont mind to get smal size coz afterall I will still use ex. HDD and thumbdrive.
-Brand: Other than Acer & Asus. Have bad experience with both brands. My asus went kaput after only 15 months.
-Processor: Dont need up to i7. i5 is more than enough.
-Usage: Minimal design need i.e. only for my websites, heavy multitasker & multitabber, play game like fifa.
-Size: 13" is sufficient. #not a must
-Battery: As long as it can be

# Hope that the recommended laptop has not been launched for some time and i prefer ultrabook. Im a gadget geek. So, I will go crazy if after 1 month, there will be new laptop with same brand being launched with MUCH BETTER spec.

I think that's all. Hope you guys can help me out. Really need the laptop asap. There is high possibilty that I will get the laptop tomorrow.

Would be good if you guys can recommend me place to buy the laptop too...

tq for the help.

Not really a lot of options, closest would be these two (with dGPUs):
13"
Asus
[Ultrabook] UX32VD-R3001H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@RM2999[1.45kg], 4GB, W8
[Ultrabook] UX32VD-R3024H, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA SSD + 500GB HDD@TBA[1.45kg], 4GB, W8

Sony Vaio SVS13125CV, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M LE@RM3099[1.72kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8; colors: maroon/white/black/pink; Vaio carrying case *not exactly an ultrabook

Otherwise this one:
Dell [Ultrabook] XPS13, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3299[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit

Care to be more specific on which series 5 model? And what is your usage?
Generally the series 5 ultrabook has pretty good build quality (but can't compare with some high end ultrabook). Good screen (matte option available, and Samsung screen is always nice and bright smile.gif ), keyboard and trackpad ok, speakers is ok among ultrabook, and some spec has GT620M (which is not bad for ultrabook).
Just make sure you get the 3rd gen (ivy bridge), because there are still some sandy bridge models around.
Samsung series 9 is the more "premium" (cough .. expensive ... cough) ultrabook line whistling.gif

Series 5 with 620M which model? Sounds ok i think if the price is reasonable. Got FHD? I dont even mind sandy if its dirt cheap tongue.gif

And actually what is equivalent to 640M and beyond if getting ATI chip? Real world usage, not just benchmark smile.gif

If you are looking at discrete GPU in Series 5:
13"
NP535U3C-A01, A6-4455M + AMD HD7500G@RM1899, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HP
14"
NP530U4C, i3-2377M + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD@RM2499, 4GB, W7HB
NP530U4C, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT620M + 24GB mSATA + 1TB HDD@RM2999, 6GB, W7HP

The A6 spec, if you spend a bit of money to swap out the HDD with a (say 120/8G) SDD, could be lots of fund, depend on your usage smile.gif If you run benchmark in standard spec, it will get blown away laugh.gif
The i3-2377M is the sandy bridge.
The i5-3317U is the ivy bridge. At that price, if you into gaming, Lenovo Y580 is a better bet.

These 14" Series 5 weight around 1.8kg (the 13" is around 1.6kg). The Dell 14R SE which we mentioned earlier, weight around 2.2kg, and have much better spec at lower price. Again, take your poison laugh.gif

AMD HD 7730M is more or less on par with Nvidia GT640. The problem is you don't find AMD GPU in lots of laptop in Malaysia. In fact, I think beyond 7730M, you have to jump all the way to find HD 7970M (which is on par with GT680M) in high end gaming laptop. Can't blame manufacturers though, AMD driver support for most recent few years was really disappointing doh.gif

With that spec i think u better go for Asus and save rn1k++. I think the trick with Asus is buy with with big retailer that handle warranty claims, like Challenger which i know they always send to Singapore for repair. ASUS got 2years international warranty should be np. Their stock also come from sg, last time when i put order.

Thanks nexus2238 for the lenghty info. YeahAMD driver issues... Neverending @@

I called one of the Lenovo shops about Y580.

The guy say add RM350 will get 16G RAM. And add RM50, get Win8.

Does it worth it or wait for Y500?

Thanks

16GB should be just around RM250,
Win 8 for RM50, is quite right, $14.99 through the Windows upgrade promo..
