What so good about star craft 2 wings of liberty? What is so disappointing about it?
I am kinda disappointing with it. After waiting for 10 years (after brood war), it ended up as nothing but a repeat of star craft & brood war. Here are some example Zero Hour Did we not play this in star craft? Holding out for 30 min until 2 drop ship arrive to pick us up. The diff is now matt horner come with hyperion. Ghost of a Chance Sarah Kerigan (an american of african decent - now red haired caucasian) did the same thing when she had to kill a confederate office. Here the diff is Nova kill Gabriel Tosh Invasion of Char This is no different from the scenario where the sons of kohal rescued edmund duke. Same old two bunker with scv to defend off the zerg's lame (couple of hydra & zerglings)sporadic attack which is no match two bunkers.
Wings of Liberty lovers, please dont turn this thread to a fighting zone. People who are disappointed with it are also fans who purchased the game. They are not haters but simply disappointed.
campaign is aa interactive guide on how to use certain unit most effectively. and i suppose they ran out of ideas to bring that unit to its full potential
This was the same with starCraft. Teach you how to get mineral, vaspene, and train marine. Next mission was about using firebats then vulture ... Even right up to brood war there are new units like doctors, valkarie ... the actual test was playing all the custom maps.
Story line is a bit different to merge d&d concept with war strategy games. Back in the days of d&d, games follow this typical path (go on a journey, pick up items, get experience to enable skill enhancement). Then came the war strategy games like red alert, total annihilation where you get resource to build and defend/attack. StarCraft being a late entry manage learn for them and put out the best. It was the top selling game in the late 90s (rank by most pc magazines). All of them were war strategy games but one d&d game "Hero of Might and Magic" made the top 5 list. Blizz wanted in on this market too. Still wanting to keep their war strategy game fans, they came up with WarCraft. You get some d&d (like seeking items to enhance amour, attack ... of your hero) and yet maintain the label of a strategy war game as it was the in thing then. With the dota branch charting great success, merging d&d into war games became their latest theme. Back in starCraft you are the executor, celebrate, commander (typical of war games), now you are jim raynor the hero in the game (typical of d&d games). Enhancing skills which was researched in each mission previously become a permanently acquired technology at the end of the mission through the lab and amoury upgrades. They did a decent job in the storyline to make this switch (war strategy to war strategy + d&d) as Tosh put it "the great jim raynor on the move but lack funds". Only thing is mission tend to repeat it self with a small twist. The XelNaga artifacts ability to restore kerigan is a bit old fashion but that is what people want. Losing a heroine to the swarm gives the fans a dissatisfied feeling. They did they same in warCraft (Slyvanas Windrunner becomes undead) to know fans dont like this too much. So they had to bring back sarah. Make her more desirable (by their racist standards) to come back as a hottie red haired.

how else are they going to go? after marine, the next tech upgrade is either firebat or "slow grenade throwing guy. forgot name". they cant give u marine on mission 1 then the next mission intro siege tank right? for new players they dont even know that marine can be put inside bunker and place ST behind for better defense
they need to build the player familiarity with the unit 1 by 1, 1 tech upgrade at a time
I agree that is why I said that starCraft is no different where the missions are actually tutorial. In the days when Red Alert was the top war strategy game, there was a manual in hard copy. If you buy "pasar malam" product then you don't get a manual. The manual will save you a lot of trial and error hassle. This in a way increase production cost so they go paperless with a built in help file. This concept does not go too well as people are not interested in reading the manual paper or paperless. People are eager to start playing after buying the product, so they (game makers) make their missions a tutorial. Every thing is built for you as a result don't know built progression. When it comes to custom game you start blank (the real test). My nephew played starCraft when he was two. That time the mouse was bigger than his hand. Now he is 15 with a bit of internet skills, he said he found the building and tech chart online. I told him that is was the same with starCraft (something I taught him when he was 2 year old). He reflected on it and said how stupid of him not to realized that he knew it all along yet thought is was a kool when it was presented in a graphical tree-branch format. What he know is practical and not a drawing. So, the drawing looks kool. The progression is marine to doctor to bunker (kinda slow compare to starCraft). After that it is not firebat. It depend on the option you chose. It is either marauder or firebat. You went the for the typical/expected pattern (hero saves the damsel in distress). Like most people my nephew went on that path too. The urgency of Dr Ariel will draw you there. I did not play Dr Ariel mission until I had a battle cruiser and made mince meat out of the zergs (in was on brutal difficulty too). I start on brutal because I don't like to play it so many times under different difficulty level. Just whack it good the first time around. Casual is for my niece to play. Now she almost completed the mission under normal difficulty. Heheh girls are somehow not drawn by damsel in distress scenario. She already had a siege tank coming into saving Dr Ariel's mission. My nephew thought I use some cheat code to get the Jackson Revenge (elite missionary battle cruiser). Yet he know his uncle never uses cheat code. My niece said to my nephew, "you hamsap mah, want to save leng lui only, so for you is mission number 2 after zero hour lor. I had siege tank lah". FrostLord, play it again and go for mission that is recommended by Tychus Finley. I go where the tech takes me and that is what you get when you follow Tychus. You will find that you get a cruiser before any other planes and tank before any other vehicle.

If you don't like what I say then tell me what do you like so much about wings of liberty (see first two line of post #1). By the way, what I said can be read somewhere?
so you are telling me that after i get marine (1st mission) i can straight get a Battlecruiser? wiki.teamliquid.net/sc2 will like to have a word or two with you
from teamliquid site, its shown that the below unit will be unlocked before u get BC ST bunker medic marauder medvac banshee
do check more on your facts before posting
and regarding the marine -> bunker instead of FB/marauder, there is a difference between unit tech tree and buildings tech tree. and why FB/marauder instead of medic, i do admit its my mistake. i watched too many tourny vids that i forgot the medic existence (they are replaced by medivac which u dun get till much later in the game, rush excluded)
First mission is Liberation day - where you get jim and some marines liberating the people of mar sara. Second mission is Outlaw or something - you cant even build bunker. just marine and medic to destroy the dominion base and steal an artifact. Third Mission is Zero Hour - You hold out against the Zerg until matt horner come to rescue you. So I said here the progression is marine, doctor, bunker. After that you have two options A) Planet Agria (I think) the home of Dr Ariel Hanson. This mission is recommended by matt horner in response to a distress call. I think it is call Evacuation where you get firebats to escort people to a starport. B) Planet Monolyth (Not sure of spelling) inhibited by some protoss. tychus finley want to go for this to get artifacts for moebius. This mission is call Smash and Grab. You are given marauders. (It is the first mission after zero hour if you choose it).
Assume you do Smash and Grab Next mission available are A) Evacuation B) Devil's Playground (mining in lava area and you get the grande throwing guys call reapers)
If you did Evacuation Next mission available would be A) Smash and Grab - tychus. B) Devil's Playground - tosh. C) mission name cant remember - this again is about saving Dr Ariel's people where you get hellion. attack only comes at night. You get to move ahead with the next mission on Dr Ariel's agenda.
Each time you follow a person's recommendation, you move ahead with that person's agenda until it is exhausted. Example if you keep following tosh he will lead you to some place to get tarazine gas then to new folsom to do jail break out.
Tychus agenda is where moebius wants him to go to get protoss artifacts. Tychus leads you to marauder, tank and BC.
No need to tell me who wants to have a word with me and what their website say. Go back have some fun playing. Keep following tychus and you will know I did not bs you.
go check the link above. dont be lazy, do some google search on it
If what I had done is contrary to what they wrote then no point looking at the sites right? Since I done something the site said is not possible are you not curious to try out what I said when you get home?
You cant exactly follow tychus all the way. Like after doing smash and grab you either do evacuation or devil's play ground, then tychus comes on again. Then at some interval zeratul will visit you. My idea was to go for the option with higher research items and more money. It is harder but you get to do it eventually since they have auto save feature. when zeratul came I did all his mission because his mission gives zerg and protoss research item. I did not do ariel until I had no options. My tech was already at full when I got to ariel. So dealing with a bunch of zerglinks and hydra is no prob. When it came to the fight at nigh mission I do it in 3 days & 3 nights (not counting the first day where you start building bunkers and gather resource and first night where you observe the attack) because I fight in day and night hours. I had 1BC & 4banshee (elite missionary). The last mission where you help the protoss in fire cleansing, I held out until I had 6 BC to sweep the zergs.
dude, the mission in all the campaign is easy, even on brutal. in brutal the only thing that improve is the unit count (enemy). the ai is still dumb as shit and u can easily outmaneuver them with a bit of micro. ie in last mission where u need to def against kerrigan, spamming bunker + ST is still damn f**king effective. and if u dont care bout achievement/research points, u can basically roflstomp all the mission. so u can skip all the "how i win this and win that" part
and u r missing my whole point.
my point is 1) you unlock unit at the mission where they are the most useful. imagine if they let u unlock FB in a mission dominated by flying units
2) the tech tree is unlocked 1 at a time. from level 1 to lvl 5(or 6,7,8,9,10). but this doesnt mean once u unlocked the last unit of a tech tree, u will already unlocked all the other unit of lower tech tree. SC2 have mission branching, so this is totally impossible. anyone with common sense will know this.
3) SC2 WoL is bad in sense of there's no campaign for zerg/toss, in other words no tutorial for these 2 races. old sc players will have little to no problem dealing with this but new player will have some hard time mastering each unit. eventhough there is tons of video available, practical usage of each unit in their best fight/environment is still the best for learning
I get your point 1 to 3 above. Stuck on SC, I agree. Talking to you made me realise my reason for disappointment besides mission repeating itself as mention earlier. What I did was do the harder mission first (by going after money and research) and end up leaving the easier mission for the last. When things comes specially easy at the end, the thrill is not there. Zergs and protoss are just meant to be bashed by terrans especially when you had BC. So they design kerrigan to take out your BC with a snap of the fingers. That being the case then go for basic build a gauntlet of bunker + marine will do. What is micro and ST. AI must the same at different difficulty level or the whole programing had to be rewritten for each level. At brutal the game speed is faster too. As to the achievement. Mine is grey-out (colorless) even though you achieved it. Is it suppose to be that way?
For some missions, brutal can give me a good run for my money. My hand and response is not as fast anymore. Not all is really shit easy. I guess you are a much better player.

because u using "ahem" copy. same like me. cant get achievement. iinm need to be online and connected to Blizz server for achievement
oh and for difficulty level, it can be done. look at war3/custom bot for sc
Play online I figured out when I accidentally clicked on the achievement tab on top left (a new screen opens telling you that you have no online connection. Thanks for confirming it.

I used to play everyday, can't play much these days cause desktop back in Pee-neneng and I'm in KL but if you think so much bout the storyline, I think you just don't get the appeal of SC2 at all.. Most of the guys here, regardless of ladder rankings already understand the fun of playing SC2.. Some more than others.. Heck, I've got friends who stopped playing SC2 altogether still takes time to watch GSL/MLG/DreamHack etc..
But, if you wanna complain of the depth in story-telling as opposed to how it was in SCBW, then you're right, it doesn't have that many details, nevertheless, go try playing ladder once in a while, then if you catch the bug, good for you, if not, just don't think so much about it and let it go.. Dwelling on a couple hundred bucks spent won't magically conjure you the money back..
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I did not complain about the story. I think the story is acceptable. I was more piss with repeated mission than anything else. Invasion of Char is the same as when we had to rescue edmund duke in SC. you have bunkers protecting the sunk BC. The SCV sneaks inside the bunker then come out to repair after attack is over. Ghost of a Chance is the same when kerrigan took out the confederate officer. ST, Science vessel, and turret covering the main entrance. Zero Hour - hold out for 20 minutes with bunker and turrets until help arrive.
I am not complaining to try to get my money back. If that was the case I would have gone to blizz. I just want to know how many people are disappointed like me and if everyone is happy about it, what is it that they so like about it? I dont see much to shout about where the new units are concern. Marauder are just another firebat except the had better range while firebat have area damage. Reapers not that strong but can jump. Not that useful Doctors' optical flare and restoration removed Ghosts' lock down removed
Hellion, how pathetic! I dont see what is so good about it. Thor the so call engine of destruction is the goliath opposite (weak air strong ground) but high cost and cant even withstand a mad rush Diamondback cool because can fire while on the move but range is bad and firepower is weak.
Which of there new units are your fave that you will produce for combat? Seemingly like a lot more new choices but not many are practical. Ya, I know FrostLord is going to say I am stuck on SC. So, it come back to what other who like is impressed by what?
Banshee another pathetic case. I still prefer writh (air and ground) both are vulnerable to canon and spore.
Viking is impressive when range is upgraded it can fire more than half screen. Get an old squadron (12 units) it can take out most flyers in one shot. Raven is also impressive.
So 2/10 new units manage to impress me is not equal to disappointment for me?
Disappointment does not mean I dont play it. I only started playing last month so I have not reached bored with it stage yet to stop playing it. Age is catching up too, I no longer had the enthusiasm and addiction for game to play several hours daily.

lol, u need to start to play the MP to know: - - marauders aka lolders are super awesome and was part of the biggest Terran imba whines - u already gone pass the meta of 5rax reapers - mass ghost was THE LATE GAME for terran - banshee is the most annoying thing u can go against as a protoss (together with the infamous 1/1/1) and is quite the standard TvZ openers with hellions now (watching lucifron do this is really awesome) - vikings are actually bad lolx - thor's are mainly used for their anti-air lolx... ever go against muta flocks? nt to mention the infamous mech push - blue flame hellions was the reason why so many patch changes were made... roasted drones was the normal 10min gg lolx... they are insanely awesome to micro and totally imba back then (till the nerf on MP) - raven is well, best troll unit in the game ever!
once u watch pros micro those units, u'll realize how awesome some of the units are lolx...
This is the type of comment I want to see from people who are not disappointed. Quazacolt below knows where I am coming from. I get no thrill watching people play as I rather be playing it. I no longer play online against another player. Call me kiasu if you like, I have no problems with it. I know my response is not as fast anymore.
By the way half the terms you used I dont understand because I did not keep abreast with the game online. but still hearing comments like yours is one of the intention I open this thread. These comments alone is enough already and can save me the time watching people play.
QUOTE(Quazacolt @ Oct 10 2012, 04:09 PM)
i think he is still commenting on single player, which extended range + aoe vikings are pretty damn god like anti air if you ask me
ahhh yes, god like that is the term I am looking for. I think 4 elite marauders, 12 war pigs and some medics are god like already. I had used his combo to mop up any mission on brutal (expect for the last mission).
this lolx... i actually managed to beat the campaign using marines and medivacs alone lolxxxxxx (unless some maps which doesnt really allow it)... they are cost effective and mobile especially wit the paradrop thingy (campaign upgrade)
the funny thing is tat tat they dun allow marauders to stim in the campaign else it'll be more of an ezmode >.< sc2 is pretty much built for esport... the new units in campaign are pretty much getting u introduced to them in MP....
since u are coming from the bw days u should realize tat units which are simple (and less of a gimmick) are those which reward skilled players due to the higher skill ceiling... the first person in sc2 imho who does this is pretty much MKP with his marines...
Added on October 11, 2012, 2:39 pmbtw, u can say that i am one of those a little disappointed with the campaign... but only from the story wise... i am very satisfied with the gameplay which is really polished imho... being an RTS, it allows me to use various strategies even for the same mission and none of them feel overpowered (though upgraded marines with double heal medivac is lolx)
story wise, it was a big letdown... its more like a setup for the other 2 games when things really get starting (prologue imho)... still the gameplay and multiplayer experience especially the esport scene made it rewarding on its own... spent more than enuff hours on it to make my money worth...
By different strategies you mean different combination of units or angle of attack?
basically the builds (which is a combination of both u said) u can use from the standard bio, turtling mech, hellion banshee, 1-1-1, ghost ravens, heavy drop plays etc... since i do follow competitive sc2, i do tend to play back campaigns using their builds (including bitbybit lolx) and they all work pretty well... of course, only possible for the ones where u can select which units to build >.<
Yes, I experiment with different build combinations too. I think most people would once the complete the campaign. You will never get enough of it after one campaign so trying out different combination is the only thing to do.
