It's more important what you do after the accident... for me I would stop to see what can be done to help or if hopeless case put the animal out of it's misery.
Sad but it's a fact of life... just have to remind myself to drive carefully and not speed.
Please be careful if you decide to help an injured animal because you could get hurt also. Best if you got a towel try to cover/wrap the animal before lifting it.
Touchwood I have never run over an animal yet, altho got few near misses. I was either able to stop, slow down so the animal can get away or safely avoid the animal
