KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has signed a general terms agreement (GTA) with Airod Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd (Nadi), to collaborate in providing aircraft engineering and maintenance support.
In a joint statement yesterday, the two companies said the two-year partnership will enable MAS’ engineering unit and Airod to take advantage of each other’s strengths to provide cost-effective and competitive maintenance expertise for all aircraft ranging from propeller to jet-engine types.
Nadi’s executive chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Johan said the GTA will help the companies co-optimise resources and share existing facilities to undertake additional third-party aircraft maintenance work.
“This is a bold step for Malaysia to become the world’s largest independent third-party MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) service provider,” he said in the statement.
MAS and Airod will also explore and evaluate future business opportunities, in relation to the expertise sharing, and develop it into a profitable and viable business model.
MAS executive vice-president for engineering and maintenance Mohd Roslan Ismail said the coming together of the two leading local maintenance, repair and overhoul (MRO) organisations will not only strengthen the capacity and capability of the local MRO industry but also position Malaysia as a leading global MRO service provider.
“We are glad to share our expertise with Airod and, at the same time, tap its skills in order to improve our competitiveness in the market,” he said.
The two companies have a total manpower of 6,400, and their collaboration will allow them to handle 64 wide-body and 364 narrow-body aircraft heavy maintenance visits per year from global aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus and ATR.
