Even if i were them, I also butthurt, 9 million USD to charity while you get nothing at all. Usually Humble Bundles dont get that much, to be honest but the Origin Bundle is just insane.
I think the investors and share holders will be questioning them soon. EA can argue that this is for marketing purposes as by giving people your older games, you'll make them hype to anticipate for your future games, ie: BF4 or Sims 4 if not just brand exposure that is always good for the company, especially most of the games there are decent to good games. At the same time, this bundle also improves their poor reputation.
Humble will be the ones laughing to the bank, as even if they only get 5%, they also get a few hundred k for doing nothing much.
I think they actually saved a ton of money from marketing instead and get a good reputation as well.
Origin was stuck at growing I think, so by giving out Origin exclusives such as Dead Space 3, Battlefield 3 and the Sims 3 to cater for different crowds, suddenly a ton of new users suddenly signs up for Origin and expose themselves to the Origin Store. Where other Origin exclusives are sold such as their sports range which I think Steam has a complete lack off other than Football Manager.
Humble Bundle are also mostly Steam users and some have never heard of Origin, so by giving Steam users exposure to their Origin Store where they have never seen before. Expose them to FIFA, NHL, NFL etc
Future Origin exclusive releases suddenly gets a very wide audience, such as BF4 and Titanfall.
