Hello to all the masters of marine tank here, I just started a marine tank. I also thinking of a way to get rid of extra LR as well, cause now my tank looks more like a LR tank instead of reef tank or FWLR tank.

Is the way, doidoi suggested can really replace bio-ring. How about the effect ?

And one more question, what is the different between tap water and RO water ? I have been browsing through the net, but still can't figure out the answer.

erm.not so sure bout the test.as i know is.the lr is clean ,(no red algae or green algae) ,if u buy from lfs u can c the water condition.normally if the lr tank was connect to their fish tank.means the % of clean was high.if u want make sure 100% the lr is clean.mayb u can put inside the fresh water for few day or let it dry under sun.of coz this will make ur lr become dead rock.hope my explanation was correct

if i was u,i wont use the "master or sifu"as we all still  learning.don think got  ppl who know very well every reef secret ..ppl will afraid to share their experiences coz afraid as giving wrong reply will get flame.
we sharing k  whistling.gif
1st do u know wat bio ring work as?it give a benefit bacteria as home to survive and population .so thn the crush coral.
2ndthe more lr u have ,the more stable tank u can get.coz it provide lot of hidden place to populate the bacteria and    pod.normally a 3 feet tank will intro 50kg-100kg depends.thats y reef tank need a strong support cabinet.
3tha ro water is a pure water free from all chemical by using a gd filtering like diamond water .or u can go buy ro water from water machine somekind like rm 0.20 per litter .and tap water is normal "paip water' inside the paip water got alot of Carolin ,phosphate,ect..

The LR just way too much, i just worried no space for those fishes to swim, and if the fishes hit the LR, it might fall on the glass of my aquarium sweat.gif

if only fot(fish only tank)u not need so much lr lo.without lr also nvm whistling.gif
*
hahaha, but my tank already cycle 5 days d. If wan to do all the scaping, really need to restart the whole tank again lu, cuz need to make the LR to dead rock 1st.
But i m planing to just dry the rock with tissue paper and glue it with epoxy and quickly place it back into tank again, hope wont kill those organisms. laugh.gif

Just now i manage to make a fast glance at the hitchhiker shadow, and i browse through the net, it is more like feather duster. I m not really wan to drill hole on the LR, just planing to drill hole only cuz wan to make more space for my fishes, hahhaha.

Added on December 13, 2010, 9:45 pmHelpuru, can anyone tell me why my tank water evaporate so fast ? I place it close to window, but did not have any direct sunlight on it.

wind blow on the surface, it will evaporate faster. use chiller and have cover closure will reduce.

Hi Alex, at last manage to see you to post. My tank is about 1 or 1.5 ft, so i dun think chiller is recommend for that.
But i saw a LFS, they selling a type of cooling fan that just stick to the aquarium and blowing the wind at the glass instead of surface of the aquarium, is it ok to use that ? About the cover, is there any flat type selling in the market ?

Hi Mallow, indeed been very long time i didnt follow up any threads.

don't waste the money on such thing, just get a small fan to blow it if overheat is your concern.

yet still you need to show some photos and tell me your setup, what you keeping, how long the tank been running. only than i can give you some proper advice.

you can keep money to invest on a small 2nd hand chiller

Hi alex, now my tank keep nothing, just live rock and sand bed, with a Dolphin H-500 filter. My tank has been run for 1 and a half week. I plan to add live stock after 1 or 2 months. Tester kit haven't buy any yet since not adding any live stock in so soon, and lighting still thinking what to get. I will try to snap a more clearer pic, but for now this is a pic snap with my webcam.

mallow

you can reduce the rock a bit, overcrowded.

what you need to buy is

1) termometer
2) NO3 test kit (rest all don't need)
3) some extra sea salt

after you monitor your water tempreture for 1-2 days only can decide need a fan or not.

keeping fish only ( tempreture swing 3-5c tolerance )
keeping coral ( tempreture swing 1-2c tolerance )

stable tempreture is what you looking for.

it can be 30-31 all the time and your fish will be ok

but if you use air con and it swing 24-31c on/off than that will be bad.

lighting depends on you want to keep corals or not? what type
sps? lps? target feed?softie?
*
Yea want to keep coral.
Still don't how to distinguish coral type yet tongue.gif , but after checking in the net, mostly every type also got something I want.

Added on December 17, 2010, 4:50 amRegarding the rock, i still thinking how to get rid of it. Thinking of giving to someone who gonna start new tank, but seems like no one there. There is a "kerang " like thingy on my life rock, I took it out and place it at the send bed, but it switch it place back to rock, looks like it is still alive, it is good or bad to keep it in my tank ?

Hi alexlow and icemamario, just got 3kg salt and no3 tester kit, and i went to Puchong Oceanic to checkout the LS, so nice there, but still have to hold on for 1 and a half month.
Dolphin mini chiller RM150 ??!! Where to get 2nd hand, forum more reliable or LFS.

Is it possible for me to introduce hermit crab 1st before any other LS ?

And there is a carbon pack in my filter, the LFS recommend me to change every 2 months. Is it function same as active carbon ?

Added on December 17, 2010, 9:27 pmJust checked my NO3, is about 0 to 10 mg/L is it a good sign ?

true i find a marine tank is a pretty slow hobby ..if u rush you might lose ur whole tank or ur money..

corals are not easy to just add add scrap2..you must consider their growth/nature..you dont really want to cramp everything inside a tank..

bro just keep ur LR i also got keep some ..wat i did is dry it for few days then keep in double plastic and tadaaaa settle
*
Mean it gonna be dead rock ??

Added on December 18, 2010, 11:25 pmThe piece of LR i wan to move is a small 1, but there is a feather duster like hitchhiker at one of it corner, feel like wanna keep it, can i break the part with feather duster and keep the other remaining part ?

Just bought a waver and a thermometer, and check temperature is about 28.1, haven't add light yet, grrrrr.. My tank size is 50cm x 30 cm, i tried to find light in LFS, they just got 60cm length and 30 cm length. if wan to add some coral, 2 x 30cm to put in width or 1 x 60cm to put in length or 1 x 30cm to put in width, which 1 better ?
