I wish people would stop harping on that stupid 1Malaysia tablet. The jokes are getting old.

My best guess would be 899 for 16GB and 1099 for 32GB.

you mean 899 for 8gb and 1099 for 16GB. There's no 32 GB for Nexus 7.

sorry, yea. My mistake.

Am I the only one who thinks RM999 for the 16GB is reasonable? Take into account that ASUS does not get a discount (as Google is selling the tablet at a loss anyway). So USD250 is RM767.

Add overhead, profit margin and shipping, I expected it to be around that price anyway.

Also note that it is RRP, which means some people will be selling it cheaper anyway. So around RM950.

In 'preparation' for the launch, anyone know where we can get Nexus 7 cases and screen protectors?

I think people have misunderstood the situation here. It's not that we don't want the product at a cheaper price, EVERYONE wants cheaper products.

The fact of the matter is that US got Nexus 7 at a cheaper price because 1) Google wants to dominate the 7" market there 2) Google is aiming to make profits from app sales.

Most of the world will receive the Nexus 7 at around RM900+ because ASUS, unlike Google, is a manufacturer which need to make profit on the products they sell. In fact, if you compare the profit margins of the Nexus 7 with other ASUS tablets, the margin is a lot less for this.

The fact that the US get products at a cheaper price is nothing new, the Brits have been complaining for years that due to the high value of the pound sterling they're always paying more for gadgets (eg. PS3 at release).

Conclusion is this: We don't like the price either but we accept that profits need to be made and instead see RM999 as a fair reflection of the value of the product (compared to other tablets).

Edit: grammar.

i think you go senQ buy better.

999, rm50 difference, but you get extra 1 year warranty from them.
much more worth compare to some accesories in my opinion.

Especially with the problems being reported by many...that extra year warranty could come in really handy.

Added on September 21, 2012, 1:25 pmCan anyone confirm which senheng and senQ currently selling this device? Wanna get mine today.

QUOTE(jpaq @ Sep 21 2012, 01:40 PM)
Apple is running a different business model. How can they make money while the prices for the iPad is relatively low (although still not exactly cheap)? The iPad is currently having a 23-32% margin. How do they do it?
-Apple has their own retail channel (online as well as brick-and-mortar shops) and their own after sales service channels as well, therefore cutting out any middlemen costs. Middlemen generally extract a 30-40% markup. The biggest cost saver is here.
-Apple gets HUGE discounts on parts due to the volume Apple is able to commit to suppliers.
-Even if there are 3rd party retailers selling iDevices, due to Apple's popularity, Apple is able to nego for lower middlemen costs/markups. Bear in mind 3rd party retailers only sell a tiny percentage of Apple's products too.
-Apple's costs are further offset by revenue from their App Store. Apple takes 30% of every app sold on the App Store.
*
Very good point. Google only takes 5% of app sales as announced at Google I/O 2011. Also, keep in mind again that we're buying the product from ASUS, not Google. There is a huge numbers of middlemen between the content provider (Google) and the consumer. ASUS is the manufacturer but you also need to account for the logistics, distributors, supply chain, resellers, marcomm...all adds to the price.

hmm.. i see
btw what is project butter actually?
what about N7 compare to the amazon kindle fire?
quite cheap also that 1
*
Project butter is an initiative by Google in Jelly Bean 4.1 to make Android more...well, smooth (like butter).

Not only is Nexus 7 a lot better than Kindle Fire, the Kindle Fire (and the newer versions as well) don't even work without rooting in Malaysia. It's meant for Americans to watch tv shows/movies/books online via the Amazon market.

Isn't meant for people in Malaysia who torrent everything.

Yeah, I need 3G better.

As for the price debate. For me if it was meant to be sold at RM999, then I have no issue. But if is was meant for RM760, then ASUS jack up to RM999, then I have issue with the way they price the product.

At which point was it "meant for RM760"? Every other country besides US is paying RM900+ for it.

I find it hilarious that there are folks here who say Asus is nothing but greedy. To those who think that... are you doing your own business? If you are, I will pray for you. If you are not, then go make more friends who are full time businessmen.

You can only get so greedy. There is a limit. One can't exactly sell the Nexus 7 for RM9k, can you? But if one can find that sweet spot of achieving that sales target with the max price that they want, why not? And if enough consumers don't buy at the price they want, then they will be forced to revise it too.

Consumers always have a choice. Supply and demand still rules. But to say this and that company is greedy because they want to maximize profits, that is just plain oversimplistic. Complain it's expensive, yes, maybe, because that's subjective to a certain extent (although I still think Rm999 is really pretty good). But show me a business who doesn't want to maximize profits, and I'll show you a failed one.

"Eh... I estimate can sell thousands of Product A at Rm1k! Seems like got demand lah! But I think I will just sell at Rm 900 lah. Got some people complain. Never mind, make less never mind."  Can you imagine any company thinking like this?
*
The funniest part is that most of those complaining about the price are still gonna buy it anyway.

Should I wait for N7 to become available at SenQ and get 1+1 warranty or just buy at Hotspot with the 1 year warranty? So anxious.

I bought mine from there, they do not provide 1 to 1 exchange, if you are going to buy there just check everything on the spot.

It would be great if you or someone could list he problems we should check for when buying the N7 such as dead pixels, screen lifting, speakers...what else?

Added on September 28, 2012, 11:37 pmQuestion regarding the USD25 credit...

Once I use the USD25 credit, will I be able to change my home country in Google Wallet back to Malaysia?

If no, what are the pros and cons of having my home country set to US? I plan on purchasing app using my visa card as well, will this be affected?
