If you're uning win7, basically it has strong enough protection, it all depends on user on how they act when a virus attack or before ti infect anything on ur pc.
For additional protection i suggest avast free smile.gif for easy user

I'm currently using Kaspersky IS. But MSE (freeware) is very good too

Norton, McAfee and kaspersky are quite popular now. Since my license on norton and McAfee just expired, i use microsoft security essentials. It's free of charge.
