Agreed, giving more sources of laurel won't actually encourage the pve only players to try pvp for the sake of having fun, it forces them to do pvp that they didn't care in order to maximise laurel. And we all know how thats gonna end.

This is what gw2 pvp needs, observer mode, proper matchmaking and private pvp room. It is the lack of these that makes pvp such a lacklustre part of the game.

you should be able to see some basic items when you first learn the profession, there are 4 tabs at crafting station, 'discovery', 'production', 'bank' & 'collections' make sure you are in 'production' tab to see the recipes that you can craft. To get new recipes to craft or to level up crafting efficiently you will have to mix and match components in the 'discovery' tab to discover new recipes.
