surprisingly waze can work without data but on an ipad
not sure iphone can or not. but no data means no traffic report only
*
Hmmm… Are you saying that without a data plan on the iPad, Waze app is still functional but you are unsure if it is functional or not on an iPhone?

It sounds wrong, to me.

The ipad WIFI only model does not have GPS built in
Apple has never explicitly stated why it does not include a GPS chip in the Wi-Fi-only models, but I suspect it is because many apps that use GPS for navigation and other duties need to draw on data from the Internet, even when they are out of range of a Wi-Fi signal. This means these GPS apps would effectively be "broken" when out of Wi-Fi range. That kind of problem is a no-no in Apple-land, and we can't argue with the reasoning.

Confusing the issue somewhat is the fact that a Wi-Fi-only iPad can fairly accurately pinpoint your location under many conditions. As long as the iPad can pick up even a few Wi-Fi signals, it can use Wi-Fi positioning - which draws on a database of known Wi-Fi hotspots - to determine where you are

So if you are able to use Waze on the WiFi only ipad it could be due to these external WiFi hotspots

Benny is right.

Wifi triangulation as they call it. However that was partly due to using Google Maps. Remember Google was charged for collecting Wifi spots? I wonder if it still work in ios 6 with Apple very own map.

Don't be too happy just yet. If I remembered correctly, even the 3G version only has assisted gps aka a-gps. This is what they refer to as cellular tower triangulation. Only works in area with cellular coverage. Correct me if I remembered wrongly.

Even if Waze is able to utilize external Wi-Fi hotspots, authentication to the Wi-Fi hotspots, if it is password protected, which is usually the case, is required and it takes seconds, if not minutes, for authentication to complete, and that only means the continuity usage of Waze on a Wi-Fi only iPad will break, not just when it is out of the connected Wi-Fi hotspots range but during the authentication period of next the Wi-Fi hotspots, when one is on the road or mobile, and that translates into troublesome and not recommended method.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Practically not feasible to use wifi only ipad for Waze due to all these constraints

I thought so too. I am just wondering how did the other forumer managed to use it despite such troublesome approach.

It's funny reading every comments posted here. If you see properly the Maps: Turn-by-Turn Navigation will be available in Malaysia by October. So its no hassle waiting for a mere month. Australia as well will not have the feature by October. Check the link below.

This additional line was just added today. It was not available yesterday.
I am glad that Apple does listen to our complain smile.gif

It's okay, as Malaysia map is always not supported by US based GPS company, already expected this to happen.
Just use sygic or papago.

It'll be useless without all those POI.
Garmin and Papago are widely used here, thanks to local community MSM & MFM.
I'd be happier if both Garmin and Papago Malaysia work harder for a rock stable software and updated maps on the iOS.

So does this means Nokia turn-by-turn is better than ios6's? Thinking of having of one of those in near future.

We are still waiting for an announcement from Apple.
Maybe it will be in conjunction with the iPad mini launch event. tongue.gif
