I wonder on average, how many job applications do you guys send before you get a confirmation on your application?

I usually dont go through jobstreet or monster. I have a relative who used to work for worldwideworker.com who helped me in the processing of my application but now that the company has be acquired by rigzone, the opportunities for employment has expanded since rigzone is a fairly popular site.

I noticed that its way easier to get a job if you have some "contacts" within a company or specific industry who can vouch for you or recommend you. That was how i got my previous 2 jobs. The last job i had hardly required me to have a lengthy interview with the recruitment officer since i knew both her as well as my future superior who was the one who recommended me for the position.

You mean like Social Network is very important to change job? I do agree that with better Social Network, it helped a lot and comparing with friend helped you forward your resume to HR is way much more easier. But some time luck and company requirement do play some roles in job hunting, some can find it after send >20 application, some send >100 application also cant get one.

In my field it is.

I don't know how true is for other industries but for OnG I'm currently in, we know most of the people in this circle and most move around this circle as well. so contacts play a large part in 'getting in'

Welcome to the club. I didnt know keppel is considered as an OnG player? More in the marine line.

Actually i have the utmost respect for you.
how do you manage to makan on $280 a month?
I can barely do it with $800 a month (i only eat economy rice almost everyday)?
Are you sure it can be done?
*
Those burmese, indian and bangla usually survive around $200 dollars. They cook all their meals to keep the cost down and they buy their produce in bulk to enjoy near to wholesale price when purchasing goods in places like little india.

I knew one guy who did his shopping once a week or every fortnightly for the whole household. It also helps if your meals mainly consist of vegetables.

hi to all the brother and sister,

Recently i was getting a job offer as project engineer in SG. However, i have a question regarding the EP. I'm a fresh graduate in degree. I do not have the letter of study completion and all the semester transcript. My university is at Sabah where it is expensive for me to go back. My convo is at next week and i'm not going back. I request my uni to post back the cert and transcript for me. But it takes time.

So, can i start working while waiting my cert posted to me?
*
Cant they provide you a scanned copy and email it you all the relevant documents that your employer requires?

is it legal to do freelance as a permit holder in Singapore?
*
Yes.

If MOM finds out, they can/will/could cancel your permit.

As the saying goes, "You can do whatever you want, just dont get caught". Its not uncommon for ppl to do things illegally in singapore, their just careful not to attract to much attention from the authorities. How else can you explain prominent people having paid sex with minors.

Yes your head. Whether somebody wants to take the risk or not is up to them, but you shouldn't be telling them "yes it's legal" when in fact is is not.
*
My bad. Sorry about that. I guess being civil is in short supply.

O&G itself is very broad so it depends on which area of O&G are you working in.  I was in O&G and had worked in SG for about two years being part of a mega project at a refinery.

More problems ahead?

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporesc...-063411977.html

I wonder if it will materialize like some ppl have mentioned that to accomodate to workforce strikes, business will have to increase prices due to the strikes.

QUOTE(ky_khor @ Dec 18 2012, 08:51 PM)
Actually I pity those WP foreign workers who're exploit by employer here in Singapore. All of us were having the same dream to earn a comfortable living in Singapore yet some of them were sent back home empty handed, being owed months of salary, and slept at inhumane space for months.
*
For most of them, earning a comfortable living in singapore is either 2nd of third in their reason for working in singapore. More of often then not, its not about making money and living in singapore but rather to earn as much as possible so that they can repay the loans they took from agents who got them a job in singapore and then save up enough to either set up a business in their home country or if their the sole breadwinner of their extended family and remit money back to their "kampung".

I've met numerous of those exploited workers and the inhumane accomodations isnt as bad as not being paid their contracted salary for months on end. The smack on the face is when the boss announces to his staff that the company does not have any money to pay them their full wages but is then seen going out with his new mistress.

You should try talking to the common WP workers in singapore, makes for interesting stories.

can't deny that mostly in the first to second year of start working. indeed many interesting stories and their cultures can be known when talk with them.
sometimes, also better draw a gap with some of them as they may become not respect to others with bad attitude. but of course, there are some with good attitude ones too.
*
More often then not, most of them are decent people. I find it amusing that some racial stereotypes are true when it comes to the indian community and the disastrous effect that power and authority is bestowed upon them.

I couldn't recall there's an OnG company at Loyang. Mostly at Jurong area or at Jurong Island.
*
There were a few back in 2006 but most of them have moved to tuas for obvious reasons.

Could be the company maybe situated there to service deep sea work boats who dock at the loyang offshore base supply base.

me too, turning 30 liao.. working in msia is hard... n no $$$ to save, but how 2 get job in sg? pls help...

i think they would just stop hiring prc and replace wif msians...

employers dim exploit them... it is those agents who do... those in their own country that got them their jobs....

owed salary m inhumane accommodations r not exploitations.. it is a crime, n i doubt many employers in sg dare

microsoft, sap
*
If only malaysians would accept the jobs that are being offered to the PRC's. Highly unlikely for msians to take over prc workforce since we have become more "discerning" when it comes to employement in sg, you need not look further than in this forum.

True, the agents for the most part exploit their own countrymen, but the trend from what i heard is the potential employer is getting a cut of the agents fee since the agent there is competition between foreign agents to secure work for their workers, so they strike a deal with the potential employer to get a cut of the agent fee, usually around 10-30 of fee paid by the poor sap to the agent with the tacit knowledge that the agent can rely on the particular employer to use the agents "services". This sort of thing mainly affects SME manpower companies.

Yes it is a crime, but a crime which is not enforced is no better then not having the law in the first place.

I agreed that employee who needs to do OT are inefficient, but sometimes employer just want to see which staff willing to stay for OT, for performance review, idk why.
so now SG company counter offer you with SGD8.4K? hmm, did you let you current company know? i wonder how much they will counter offer back? MYR 25K with lower exchange rate at 2.48?
i wonder which field you are in? did i miss out that you mentioned? tongue.gif
*
Hey, dont overly generalize people doing OT as inefficient. I used to do OT, but that mainly in the servicing sector and the client are the ones who requested me to do OT since it was either urgent work which had to be complete ASAP or due to last minute scheduling changes, i was called up around 3pm or later to go onboard the ship to do some work.

There are some OT scenarios which are both valid and beneficial for the worker, i once had to go onboard a drillship at the edge of the south china sea, due to some odd reason, the transport that was provided for the transit voyage between singapore and the ship at sea was not the faster turbine boats but an older prop model. So the journey alone took 14 hours to and fro from singapore to the ship and back again.

most FT from indian sub continent hv very bad BO, n the locals hate FT coz of that.. but although Nepalese r dark skin, they dont smell... local luv gurkhas too...  biggrin.gif
do u use d cane?  hmm.gif
*
Haha, you could chalk that upto their "diet". But then again anybody who toils in the hot sun and sweats would have bad BO. Plus dont they usually have company transport which is usually at the back of a truck?

The cane is not as bad as that malaysian step dad who practically "b**** slap" his step son which the mother recorded. Another alternative to purchasing a cane can either be a belt or a phone book.
