Hey guys, as per title.

Other than cost difference (since garage = bricked up), any reason as to why there are not many around in Malaysia?

What are the disadvantages of a lock up garage when compared to a car porch?

Disadvantages:
In term of space, garage will take more space and it will occupied almost more than half of your ground floor entrance.
In term of ventilation and view, it will block your ground floor living room ventilation and views.

Advantages:
It will more safe for your car storage.

Appearance is really hard for judgement. It depends on your designer.

In order to have a garage, the house design have to change. Instead of vertical where depth is longer than wide normally what we have here, it need wider lenght than depth. The garage will be at the side of the house. An indoor door will be connect between the house and the garage. That won't block your hall or anything infront.

Garage use to be as a car park, storage and workshop. Specially during winter time for the western.

In here malaysia, garage is separate out far from the house. You still can see this kind of garage house at PJ or Ipoh.

Thanks for the response guys.

So from what I am gathering, reason porches are more popular is for the extra open space?

I am in the process of purchasing/designing/renovating two single storey terrace unit (one corner). 500sq meter. Overall it's about 21m deep with a 16m flat frontage and another 7m but at an angle.

I am very much fixed on wanting a garage, but I wanted to know if there are any drawbacks that I am unaware of.

These are the few drawbacks that I know of:
Costlier - more materials required
Heat - Enclosed area, making it an oven during day time, easily fixed with proper insulation + air flow, I am sure
Size - Aesthetically not as pretty
Natural Light - It takes up precious wall space, and so it will give you that much less windows

My idea at the moment is to have the garage built up at the front of the inner unit (6m wide frontage, perfect size for a standard garage), sharing walls with the neighboring terrace. That will still give me another 17+m of ground floor entrance.

Thanks everyone for their input, really appreciate it.

Hi, like to know how is your project going on. I personally like garage very much but I am not sure if I am able to do so in normal terrace house. Wanted to see if you can show some photos of your garage is done.
