Yeah that's what annoy me everytime to see new notification either Need unlock my phone or open app. On ios and android u do not need to do that it will notify u by sound or light notifications

Both on 3g and wifi? Ask him restart the phone then immediately use another phone send a what's app message ro him. Whatsapp does work in the background once u open whatsapp and minimize it to the background

The biggest limitation of WP7.5 is for non-native instant messengers, you have to re-execute the apps once you click on the notification to read new incoming messages. Worse still, most of these apps need reconnection to server and it takes a few more seconds. Why???? lol Only Whatsapp managed to partially solve this issue (without reconnection to server, but you still have to start the apps again once u click the message in notification).
I hope this is fixed in WP8!

just to confirm the steps, i restart my phone, then immediately use my friend's phone to send the message to lumia 920.

somehow, i couldn't find tango on the store, probably not compatible with wp8

the price for contract ones are varied. depending on the plan, you can get as cheap as free or as high as £240. but since here in UK lumia 920 is exclusive to EE/Orange/T-Mobile, the monthly payment is not cheap compared to other provider.
i bought the off-contract one at Phones4u since somehow their system rejected my debit card as i suspected, they don't want to accept university residence as billing address. grabbed the phone for £460 and Orange PAYG sim, but over wpcentral, someone mentioned that he saw EE store sells lumia 920 off contract for £400
there goes my £60 which i can use to buy another Wii U games later
