Yup. Big Sam's style is always gonna be high ball, physical and crash, boom, bang. So it's gonna suit him. While we concentrate only on our tiki taka Kiki lala mini myni mo style that never produces any goals from open play.
*
If the team cannot score a goal from open play through "possession football", I do not see why or any harm trying plan B of high ball, and physical.
After all many said PL is more physical than most other league, isn't it?

If manager cannot have all the money to buy whoever players suit to their philosophy of football, then with existing resources available, won't be better to try to utilise what the player can offer aka play at the strength accordingly, until the manager can find the target personnel, only change the way of play?

QUOTE(Mikeshashimi @ Sep 5 2012, 12:45 PM)
fixed.

Seriously, this pair WAS awesome...

Still remember the Gerrard Pass - Owen Goal vs. Newcastle.
*
Gerrard last time was very good of sending this kind of pass to forwards that resulted 1v1 with GK and Owen/Torres to score.

This has not happening lately.

Also miss his thunderbolt as well.

I seldom see current players have a long range shooting nowadays, last time got Mascherano, Hamann, Risse, Berger as well as Gerrard to score those long range goal or thunderbolt, but lately has not seen already.

Financial fair play will never work. Teams will always find a way around it. For example, if I own a football club, I could simply transfer 100 million to my brother's account, "family reasons", could anyone stop that? Then my brother's company sponsors my football team for 100 million, I don't think there are any rules that stops family members from investing? If there is, it can be considered as discrimination. There are many other ways around FFP, which is good in prnciple but can never be implemented. Just like the speed limit in highway, people will slow down at areas where they know there is a speed check, in other areas they can still speed like hell. Some rules just can't be 100% be implemented. A better rule would be to implement salary cap or transfer fees cap, that way no matter how rich a club is they still can only spend a limited amount of trasnfer fees and also wages. That wil create a more level playing field, and is much harder to find a way around it, if not impossible.

Also I don't understand why Rodgers is getting so much stick here, a good manager is manager who believes in his own philosophy. Or would you say the likes of Pep Guardiola is not a good manager? Cause I'm pretty sure he woldn't set up his team in any other way but short passing and quick movement. Every manager who comes in will want to stamp their mark, Kenny did it too. Remember when Kenny first came in, he played pass and move as well, for 6 months where our form was like a title contender. Then came the summer where Kenny sold the likes of Meireles, sideline the likes of Kuyt and Maxi and bought in players like Downing, Adam and Henderson. Basically what Kenny was trying to do was to switch from the pass and move to a more rigid 4-4-2 with crosses from the wing where Carroll was supposed to thrive. Needless to say, things didn't turn out as planned.

Rodgers is not wrong imo to sell players who doesn't fit his style, the fault lies in the owners not backing him to get the players he needs. Look at Barcelona, do you think that their youth academy plays direct football cause they don't have Messi? No, pass and move is the ethos there in Barcelona, all the way through, from the youngsters to the coaching staff, so much so that Guardiola can leave and be replaced without any problem by Villanova, cause there is a philosophy there which is instilled all the way through the club. I'm not saying that Rodgers will be successful like that, but all I'm saying is that he is trying to do that and I for one am all for it. FSG talks about building for the future, so I'll say it can be considered as similar, playing direct football with Carroll may be seen as a short term fix but not long term, cause in the long term Rodgers aim is to play pass and move, the Spanish football style. So we must try to play pass and move, cause the only way to become better at it is to play it.
*
Yes & No.

Yes, good managers have their own philosophy and have own way how the team want to play.
But you need to look at your available resources as well.
Just like suddenly you become a CEO or manager of a new company, you have your own philosophy of management, so existing available resources are working at different way, so sack all the employee, and resulted the production lack of personnel and may affect the production or output of the company, only then found cannot get a replacement for the sacked employee.
You only get rid only when you assure can get a replacement, not directly sack or ship out all that cannot fulfill your philosophy straight away.

So if new resources is not available, a good manager need to find way to work out existing resources available, to bring best out of them.

If short term cannot fix, you do not have long term. Sadly to say.
Existing good and top players may leave and good players won't like to join if the club is consistently out of CL as well as Europa league placement.

QUOTE(dillonyong @ Sep 17 2012, 09:22 AM)
You cant really take it out on fans as some of us have supported the club for more than 20 years. Since Roy Evans era until now, we have always been a  work in progress. Under Houllier and Rafa, at least we get Champions League football while being a work in progress. Now, after a miserable 20 years, we are still "a work in progress".

Liverpool fans are the last people on earth that can be categorised as impatient! Bring down expectation? Isnt it already low enough? Down further? You sure about this?

I understand that you may be disappointed by a few comments but to attack fellow red who treats you as brother in common love and support for our team is really low. Hope that you will never post another scathing attack on your brothers anymore.

Bring down expectation that staying at 16th in the table? sweat.gif

The performance of recent match is not something to be happy about.
23 shot on goal, 6 on target against Sunderland, sums up the problem the team current has.

As said for another 3-4 matches still can score or can win, we may be more impatient fans. No offence, but reality can blame totally the fans.

The team may have lot of possession, but real threat to the goal is not as good as possession stat shows.

QUOTE(markblurberry @ Sep 16 2012, 03:01 PM)
Its already bad reading some dreadful and really stupid comments in this thread, but to read some mindless freaks banging their keyboards - sometime you would wonder - 'my god, are they watching another game, in another dimension!!' Seriously guys - a notable few, you know who you are - your comments sounded like SCUM, and that you have nothing better to do but troll in this thread....rightly or wrongly, i hope you are not trolls, they are lowest in the food chain. Sometimes, the thing you write, tells a lot about you, your credibility and your understanding of the game. If you are not good enough, dont write - get some tuition or something, but dont write! Its blardy awful reading it! I for one, will take note of those few names who, probably tranverse or time travel a few dimensions, watching different version of Liverpool play a  different version of Sunderland - probably high on Ice or whatever party drugs- yes -you, please spare urself some credibility, and spare us some really awful incomprehension, STOP WRITTING

Back to Liverpool, didnt watch the game in full, but we tend to play better away last season, but to have this performance for an away game, i think i take a lot of the positives. Last season, away to Sunderland - our 1st game - correct me if I am wrong - we play awful, and also outplayed, out manouvre and out fought - the same cannot be said this time.

I been saying about Stevie. G's decline, but i tot he played much better yesterday - and please please you guys, if your misconception or expectation of gerard is about lung-busting or door breaking move in the centre and scoring with a thunderbolt all the time - think again - its not saturday everyday...best to bring down your expectation, or even better - erase the part where he score 19 goals season- its been playing at a rewind in your memory and its not healthy in the long run

I think you get it wrong already.

First match of the game last season (it is home game for Liv), against Sunderland, Liv totally outplayed Sunderland in the first half, Suarez missed the penalty, hitting the workwork and many commentator said Liv should ahead 3-0 by half time. But all change in the second half.
I remembered clearly, because there was huge optimistism when seeing the first match after big spending before the season started.

Bring down expectation?
Who is going to score more than 10 goals then from the midfield?
Allen?
Lucas?
Sterling?

You need a midfielder that can score 5-10 goals, can't always rely on striker to score.

See how Paul Scholes still inspire the team, scored goal, and made key contribution in coming back and win the game after trailing, this is what the team needed especially from the captain to boost the morale of the team.

Liv play is predictable in recently, no aerial threat, only by feet, crowded Suarez with 2 defenders, then all move to the final third easily die down.
Midfielders long range shoot either tame or most of the time out of target.

You can't blame some fans, lot of possession and passing, but not clinical in final third and finishing. Unlikely for the top team, whenever attack, you can sense there is every goal opportunity.

See how Sunderland scored the goal, cross came it, only 1 upfront to meet the cross, bang, goal.

Nah, I don't think so, many reports says BR will be given time to prove his worth.
*
Talk only, but when come to real test, situation may not as same as talk.

After 8-10 matches and still no win or win 1 or 2 only, and languish at 16th, only then we can see how real report will be.

We are in serious need of a striker. Luis is heavily marked all the time and bullied by defenders who will take advantage of referee not siding with Luis all the time. Borini has scuffed quite a number of open chances. I really hope we can sign someone tall, quick and intelligent like Stevan Jovetic in January.

Defensive positioning also needs major improvement or we will continue conceding goals while struggling to score.
*
The team need striker that can make decisive shot, like Berbatov.
A striker who can make a header goal, a striker that can pop up to make a tap in, like Kyut's goals in the 3-0 win against MU.

Just like Sunderland goal.

You do not need tiki taka, slick passing before a goal is scored, sometimes, make it direct and simple.

Yup. Easier fixtures by then. Hopefully strings of wins will get us going by then. biggrin.gif

1st match of this season was taught as easier fixture also.

At current form and ability to score goal, there is no easy fixture.
