Dehydrated skin lacks water, therefore it needs to be hydrated. Dry skin lacks oil, therefore it needs to be moisturized. Hydration makes our skin soft, but it won’t stay that way if there is no oil protecting that hydration from evaporating & leaving our skin, which would make it dry and flaky. On the other hand, applying oil on top of already dehydrated skin may smoothen it, but it will still lack the hydration that makes it feel soft and elastic. So, both hydrating & moisturizing our skin is important.

Firstly, you need to learn which can actually hydrate & which can really moisturize. The key to proper skincare is to learn the ingredients. Once you roughly know the ingredients, just 1 look at the ingredient list can tell whether the product is indeed what it claimed to be or what it can actually do. Don't just blindly follow people's suggestions to try brand A, try brand B, try brand C etc etc. If you enjoy being a guinea pig, then by all means feel free to try around.

To hydrate, the ingredient must have humectant properties i.e. the ability to attract moisture, like a moisture magnet. Some examples of natural ingredients with humectant properties are glycerin, hyaluronic acid, honey, aloe vera etc. Be very very careful with synthetic humectant because it pulls moisture from deeper level of your skin to hydrate the surface. That will lead to severe dehydration & speed up your skin aging process aka you'll look old & beaten up really quick.

To moisturize, you need oils. There are 3 types of oils in the world; mineral oil (petroleum byproducts), animal oil & lastly plant oil. Among those 3, only animal & plant oil can truly moisturize. Mineral oil merely traps moisture on your skin, it'll clog your pores along the way. The most common natural moisturizers are plant based oils because it's difficult to get animal oil consistently. Some examples of plant oil are coconut oil, olive oil, shea butters, cocoa butters etc. Besides moisturizing, each oil has its own nutrients & benefits. So use that one that suits you the best.

Man, you really know your stuff.
Some hydrating/moisturising products or oils can clog the pores and cause pimples, therefore, find one that suits and stick to it. It is also the best to know your skin type 1st, and then find the products with ingredients that is best suits your skin type.

No choice, have to know or else I'd be getting lawsuits from my disgruntled customers laugh.gif

A lot of people only & truly learn about skincare after they started work, because good skincare tend to be beyond a normal student's budget. Plus students usually go for "trendy" stuffs with strong placebo effects.
