Hi there, i am fairly new in android. Owned a HTC Diamond2 till 10 days ago when the maxis deal became too good to ignore, so got myself a blue 16G s3. Rooted for backup purposes. Can i find out whether what i think is correct?

1. My titanium backup can be copied into my external microsd. If something bad happens, i can always copy the information back to internal memory, use TB and restore, correct?

2. ROM manager created the backup in my internal memory. Not sure why. So in order to open up more space, i moved the whole folder into my external microsd. If i need to restore, can ROM manager restore from my external or do i need to copy it back into my internal memory?

3. Lastly, since i have already rooted my phone, do i need to re-root if i do a minor ICS update? I am not referring to the major ICS to JB update, just the small incremental update of ICS that pops up on and off.

Thanks in advance to all the sifus and experienced users out there.

i answer what i know

2 never use ROM manager, use titanium backup or rom tool box pro
3 if you update stock rom will be need reroot, better use wanamlite or checkrom, have same update just stock apps need install yourself
*
Thanks apisfires for you advice. I used ROM manager because i thought it was able to do complete system, app, setting all in 1 go in case factory reset become inevitable. Haha. Currently also using TB for all my apps backup.

Was toying with the idea of wanamlite but currently my knowledge a bit too fresh. No guts to flash my s3 yet. Maybe after a little while to get a bit more experienced. biggrin.gif

1 - U can always select where u want it to be copied , internal or external memory . Save u the trouble of coping here and there and corrupt the files

2 - What backup are u referring 2 ? Sorry , didnt use ROM Manager for a while . Best is go recovery and backup and restore from there

3 - Sorry , havent update using KIES for a long time
*
Thanks Noobi3, but for some wierd reason i couldnt figure out how to force it to backup (both TB and ROM manager) to my ext SD and not my internal memory. Still toying with the app. Haha.

you must know S3 have different framework with your old device, so i advice you never do complete system, app, setting.
backup apps+ data only, never backup system, your phone will be fuked  icon_rolleyes.gif

Phew. Lucky you told me. Haha. Thanks apisfires.

QUOTE(Noobi3 @ Sep 2 2012, 07:08 PM)
For TB , go to Preferences > Backup Location ...... If it's internal memory , it s should be mnt/sdcard  . . Fromc there , u can crea te external memory . I forgot exactly but I think is externalsd ...... Try around , it's somewhere there . No idea on ROM manager but for Android backup , it's dependant on the recovery . Some save in internal , some in external
*
Thanks Noobi3, will go to my setting and check it out after this.

If you want to do full backup for your phone system, current firmware/rom and all your apps plus data then it's better you do Nandroid backup using CWM recovery.
Anything bad happen or you need to do factory reset then you can just restore everything back using the same CWM recovery.
*
Thanks for the suggestion waveweaver, pardon this question from an inexperienced (<2 week android, <1 week root experience) user but when you mention CWM recovery, i assume it has already been installed into my phone when i rooted it even though i can only see CWM and SuperSU icon in my apps. I assume i can enter the recovery either via the CWM manager or the triple button combination on phone. Does the choice of backup appear in the recovery mode or is it an apk app that i activate similar to all programs e.g. ROM manager and it will self boot and self backup after that?
Strangely when i try to use the CWM, it says "This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you are running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled". Umm, i am in need of a dictionary to explain this. Does this mean i have to re-flash again? I used the Odin method of rooting my phone last week.

Thanks again.

Ignore the error.....The backup and restore can be access via the 3 button mode...
*
Thanks TunYau, strangely when i boot into recovery i only have 5 choices (reboot system now / apply update from ext storage / wipe data factory reset / wipe cache partition / apply update from cache). How do i do a backup? DO i need to enter one of these choices? Or is there something wrong with my CWM recovery?

Thanks

Do you using custom kernel.? And did you root your phone by flashing CF-root.?
Anyway if you use custom kernel the then CWM Manager app will be disable much of its feature. That's okay as you can still go into CWM recovery by using three buttons combo and still can do Nandroid backup.

One more thing..CWM Manager app is NOT compatible with ROM Manager app.
*
Thanks waveweaver. Will look through my files and let you know. I think i flashed with CF-root via Odin but will confirm with you later. Through my 3 button technique into recovery mode, i got these choices: reboot system now / apply update from ext storage / wipe data factory reset / wipe cache partition / apply update from cache but no backup choice, any idea whats wrong? Will uninstall ROM manager and retry again, maybe its an app clash causing it..

No luck, uninstalled ROM manager but still same issue.

Which CWM version? maybe you can get cf root 6.4 and try root again.

Backup restore shoudl be there...
*
TunYau, you are probably right. Need to root again probably. Btw, how do i check for which version of root i have. Other than having to dig through my files at my desktop is there a way to check the version on my phone through my phone?

Thanks

Are you sure your CWM recovery dont have 'backup and retore' in it..? Is it CWM recovery or stock 3e recovery.?
Hmm..i suggest you try root again your phone using PC Odin using CF-root from the link below

*
Thanks waveweaver, will re-root again, I havent found my previous files yet. Haha.
You are right, it is stock 3e recovery. What does that mean?

It means most probably your phone got root but not CWM recovery. Since you got root edi then you can just flash the CWM zip files via PC Odin to get the CWM.
Below is the link for CWM zip files. You can use either way biggrin.gif

Cool. Thanks waveweaver. Will try to do later. Haha. Thanks for the advice. Will update you of its progress. Haha. notworthy.gif

@TunYau
@waveweaver

Many thanks to both of you for your suggestions. Manage to finally get it to recovery mode to backup my phone. Not sure what was wrong but i failed even with flashing the CWM recovery 5.5.0.4 - "v1.5" by itself. So decided to do the whole shebang CF-Root 6.4, that reset the whole thing and now it works, even the CWM manager. Yea! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

My previous attempt to root was with CF-Root 6.1, maybe that version caused some gremlins in my S3. Not sure...

Anyhow, all is well. Till JB anyway. Haha. laugh.gif

I am curious if there's a setting i missed. In my previous HTC diamond2, i managed to sync 2 years of calendar events with gmail calendar that i can peruse when i log into gmail.
However when i bought my s3, and synced with the calendar, it only downloaded that particular months's event. All the rest of the previous 2 years were not syned into my phone. Is it because it is considered past events? Is there a way to sync it into my phone even though it is 2 years ago?

Thanks in advance

i was trying to figure out whats taking up my internal memory and saw these:
/sdcard/.thumbnails (474MB)
/sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails (1.3GB)

Does anyone have these high amount of GB used for thumbnails? I am not even sure if they are duplicates.

I am using x-plore as my file explorer. Not sure if they are created by it or other programmes. Do you think its safe to delete them?

Thanks in advance.

The most sure way is to factory reset using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...84&postcount=15

Boot into recovery CWM, and clear cache and dalvik. Then flash your desired rom.
All traces of junk files will be gone.
You then boot up the phone, use titanium backup to restore Applications only (go through the list and only restore the ones you still consider is useful to you).

then your done :}
For regular maintenance, just use an app like 1tap clear cache usually does the trick.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...e=search_result

For more advanced users there is SD Maid Pro. However unlike CCleaner on the Desktop, it doesn't safely select junk files. You need to select your self, which can be hard to identify for newbs. I only use SD Maid Pro to uninstall apps, and check which is the biggest files on my device in ascending order.
Thats my tip for keeping your S3 nice and clean  nod.gif

Moogle Stiltzkin, excellent advice. Will do as you advised tonight.

you PAAIDD?? seriously? since when the paid thing started?

Theoretically, apparently, after a year in android, you are supposed to pay usd1.99 i think.
So i did it via ipad for usd0.99 and ported it over to my s3. I dont support the idea of different charges for different OS, thought i could save usd1. Also android apparently is a recurring annual fee while its not on ipad.
I guess i miscalculated something. When it working before this, it was awesome, now, not so much

Been using whatsapp on android since android 2.1 no payment needed. license auto renew by whatsapp once expired.
You must been conned by "apple" last time. No need to be so sad.
BTW whatsapp down 1 day already did this much damage to your life??
Be happy on the application icon_rolleyes.gif

Sad its not functioning. Not damage, just great inconvenience, some contacts no viber or line, ended have to sms, waste $ equivalent to usd 1 already. Sigh.
Anyhow, tellvmyself the usd1 is support for developer. Hahaha.

I agree. Just that i dont understand why apple is single pay (10 years) while android is yearly. vmad.gif

Thats why i paid via ipad n ported over for a 10 year license on my s3. Hahaha.

I dont mind paying fair value for apps but not when got different price structure.

I hope they are clearing out batch by batch of phone numbers. mine only worked very late yesterday when lots of other people could already use whatsapp. you probably can't do much except wait and have patience.
