One typical lossless album is around 300mb. You can calculate from this number multiply by the number of albums you want.

Rip from your own CD is okay. Illegal ones u can google it. Haha.

There are a lot of LYN members selling used cd/sacd in the garage sales (music and audio related). You can hunt there.

APE and FLAC and ALAC are all lossless. Meaning they preserve most (if not all) of the sound quality from the CD itself.

I usually buy mine. Due to money constraints and being picky about what is worth converting to FLAC (like S.O.A.D and C.O.B albums need to be in FLAC tongue.gif ), I don't have a large collection of FLACs, just around 10GB. It is growing but very slowly.

I think the law states that copying the music for others to use other than yourself is illegal. The CD is yours, but the music is bound by the copyright law, and that you the buyer is the only one who can have a copy of the music, and that copy is not for distribution.

Metal and many of its sub-genres, prog-rock, nu-prog, some classics, cello metal, alt-rock. smile.gif Also some gothic, and piano and cello pieces. Those are what I mainly listen to.

Rock Corner has not a very good selection of non mainstream albums. And its just not as good as HMV in UK or any online store.

It takes about a week to arrive after it has shipped out. And I have my items shipped back using my company account so I have no idea.

Even Ripping is consider as illegal in a sense, unless you bought it from somewhere else.

Anyway you can still get lots of classical music through download online (legal).
You can refer here if you can afford and has the way.
http://www.head-fi.org/t/231404/best-websi...c-encoded-songs
This is where you can actually search for HQ Vinyl Rips (legal). Though, you need to have a US address in order to purchase from them.

RIAA said you can't even "copy" your music, means the music stays at the CD, and die with it, so if it dies, buy another? sweat.gif
So you can't even "backup" your precious physical collection due to such Law.
Those which bought from store such as HDTracks, iTune Store are different, they're possibly the only digital music that's legally available through digital (soft) media so you may buy from them legally. They're not too expensive, neither they're cheap if you need hell lots of collection, hehehe... doh.gif

I don't know where you are getting your information from but this is a direct pulldown word for word from the RIAA laws. And bear in mind that the RIAA Laws are only applicable in the USA and Malaysian Laws are so laxed its almost nonexistent.

----------------------------------------------------------

Unauthorized Copying is Against the Law

Copyright law protects the value of creative work. When you make unauthorized copies of someone’s creative work, you are taking something of value from the owner without his or her permission. Most likely, you’ve seen the FBI warning about unauthorized copying at the beginning of a movie DVD. Though you may not find these messages on all compact discs or music you’ve downloaded from the Internet, the same laws apply. Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, rental or digital transmission of copyrighted sound recordings. (Title 17, United States Code, Sections 501 and 506).

Its only if you copy the Material and distribute it, if you copy it and keep it to yourself for personal use, its alright. By unauthorized copies, it means copies that you distribute to others without permision not copies that you make and keep to yourself.

What the Law Says and What it Means

Making unauthorized copies of copyrighted music recordings is against the law and may subject you to civil and criminal liability. A civil law suit could hold you responsible for thousands of dollars in damages. Criminal charges may leave you with a felony record, accompanied by up to five years of jail time and fines up to $250,000. You may find this surprising. After all, compact discs may be easily be copied multiple times with inexpensive CD-R burning technology. Further, when you’re on the Internet, digital information can seem to be as free as air. U.S. copyright law does in fact provide full protection of sound recordings, whether they exist in the form of physical CD’s or digital files. Regardless of the format at issue, the same basic principal applies: music sound recordings may not be copied or distributed without the permission of the owner.

Even digital files are protected even if you buy them from HD Tracks.

What the Courts Have to Say

A long series of court rulings has made it very clear that it’s against the law both to upload and download copyrighted music without permission. It doesn’t matter whether you’re dealing with sound recordings, pictures, software or written text. The courts have consistently ruled that many peer-to-peer (P2P) programs and other unauthorized uploading and downloading inherently amount to copyright infringement and therefore constitute a crime.

Common Examples of Online Copyright Infringement:

You make an MP3 copy of a song because the CD you bought expressly permits you to do so. But then you put your MP3 copy on the Internet, using a file-sharing network, so that millions of other people can download it.
Even if you don’t illegally offer recordings to others, you join a file-sharing network and download unauthorized copies of all the copyrighted music you want for free from the computers of other network members.
In order to gain access to copyrighted music on the computers of other network members, you pay a fee to join a file-sharing network that isn’t authorized to distribute or make copies of copyrighted music. Then you download unauthorized copies of all the music you want.
You transfer copyrighted music using an instant messenging service.
You have a computer with a CD burner, which you use to burn copies of music you have downloaded onto writable CDs for all of your friends.
Somebody you don’t even know e-mails you a copy of a copyrighted song and then you turn around and e-mail copies to all of your friends.

Its not copyright if you keep your rips to yourself, the same owner who owns the CD's that you bought.

When we were taking Cyber law paper in university, the lecturer taught us that in Malaysian Cyber Crime law (which is still pretty raw and under developed), it is illegal to transfer any copyrighted materials from one medium to another without the consent of the owner of the copyrighted material(s).

That's what i remembered from my law studies. Please forgive me if I'm wrong. Just sharing what i was told.

I think it is fully alright for you to have a digital copy of the disc. However, the disc and the digital copy is yours and YOURS only. The disc and/or digital copy may not be in others' possession (by them copying it). You can have it in multiple devices as long as they are your devices and they stay yours (meaning you willingly give them a copy through the device, if it's stolen then tough luck tongue.gif ).

Oh heck we all do it. Even MUSE in an interview said they used some form of P2P program (forgot the name, probably Limewire as it was famous back then) to download some music for inspiration (and this is when they are rich and famous). laugh.gif

*ahem* you know I know la, not everyone can afford those SACD, don't tell me poor guy have to listen to poor quality?
Which is why the digital is so talk-about nowadays, Foobar even support 32-bit encoding (24-bit not enough??????)
But of course if I can afford it, I wouldn't mind spend on SACD equipment, may cost up to 10k for entry...

Some (FLAC) get from chinese forum and some bought from YesAsia and rip to AIFF then transfer to my iPod.

And for how big, mostly I'm listening Korean songs only.

i'm also support the Korean singer, so bought their albums too. Usually I buy their albums for my own collection.

Lossless which I download from Chinese forums, the best if you know Chinese language because China market is spread widely in nowaday. They share everything widely throughout the Chinese forums, Chinese websites and Chinese blogs.

Oppa Gangnam Style FLAC lossless, download from a Chinese forum.

Some are rip directly from an original CD, 100% pure CD quality AIFF format (AIFF is CD quality but not a lossless quality).
Attached Image

AIFF is an uncompressed audio format
Attached Image

while, FLAC is a compressed lossless audio format
Attached Image

You can rip them to WAV, AIFF .. uncompressed format. But the files sizes compromises your HDD or storage availability.

something like a music quality matching, it compares your disc to the internet average which is the best, and rips it with corrections
