I believe many of us, like me, have dreamt of a laptop that combines powerful components with small footprint, with this, I am wishing that our prayers are finally answered. Let me present to you, ASUS U500VZ.

Thickest at 0.78 inch
Ethernet
HDMI
3x USB 3.0

October 2012 shortly after Win 8 launch

News and Preview/Review [added ixbt.com, Trusted Reviews, Ibtimes, PocketLint] 31/8/12 0350

So here are the only questions:
1. GDDR3 or GDDR5?
2. which CPU?
3. any throttling?
4. which chipset? HM77 (raid-able) or HM76 (non raid-able)
5. weight?
6. PRICE?

CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS TO BE RELEASED!

Based on link to pricing - 1 632,52 € (exclude sales tax) - RM6,388/=

ASUS U500VZ-CN046H 15.6inch FHD+IPS Matt Intel i7-3612QM NV GT 650M 2G GDDR5 VRAM 8192MB DDRIII 1600 128SSD+128SSD 8 cell W8-64-bit (U500VZ-CN046H)

Similar price to retina MacBook Pro. So this is not like Zenbook Prime level price

considering ASUS's aggressive pricing here, i'm guessing it'll be about RM5000 when it launches for a medium configuration....

They have to put a good price to compete though.
Especially competing against the Sony Vaio S15.

The pre-configured Vaio S15 with i5-3210M, FullHD IPS, GT640M LE 1GB, 640GB HDD, 6GB RAM, W7HP, weight around 2.0kg cost about USD899.99(roughly RM2,835).
While the one with i7-3612QM, FullHD IPS, GT640M LE 2GB, 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, W7Pro, weight around 2.0kg cost about USD1,249.99(roughly RM3,937).
Get your own M4 512GB SSD for RM12xx, and you're done.
That is without the discounts and rebate yet.

Hopefully this Asus doesn't have the orangegate issues like some of the fullHD 15" IPS out there(vaio s15 is one of them with the issue).

Edit : Also noticed that if you customize it to i7-3612QM, FullHD IPS, GT640M LE 2GB, DVD Drive(instead of Blu-ray), 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, W7HP cost about USD1029,99(RM3,241).

Asus's laptops are generally fair in terms of price, I'm guessing it'll be around RM4-5k too~
I just hope we don't get the lousiest configurations here tongue.gif

Dell XPS 15 is not coming afaik... so it'll still be considered as special... at least until other manufacturers decide to step up their game nod.gif

so some guy at NBR forums got his hands on a pre-production sample, here are some of the findings:

1. hints of release in November
2. 3dMark11 & PcMark07 for 2 hours = CPU @ 85C, GPU @ 75C
3. during this time the palmrest and keys are cool, while the area above the keyboard. the bottom and cooling grill gets unbearably hot
4. keyboard feeling is close to N56, travel is alright, Numpad & arrow keys are a bit cramped
5. trackpad seems a bit jumpy, like on the UX31A
6. has mini-VGA & full size HDMI
7. has Raid 0 with 2x 128gb SSD, TRIM works
8. comes with optical drive, BR may be option
9. 90W adapter, 74Wh battery, lasted around 3~3.5hrs, BatteryBar shows 20mAh per hour
10. about 2kg
11. screen somewhat between glossy/matte, like other Zenbooks, same display as Envy 15 & Vaio S15, but minus the red/orange issues, bleeding not a problem, sample #1 #2 #3 U500 on lower left, X220 on lower right
12. fans are running all time, but are barely audible in quiet room with idle/basic task
13. wireless performance consistent and on par with X220
14. might come with sleeve in final unit

and here's the hands on video
