Hi all,

My 6 speed gearbox used in 4age blacktop have some grinding sound when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Most probably the synchro already spoiled. Was thinking of replacing the synchro (repair). How much would that be including workmanship? Wanted to know the average price as i don't want to be cheated by the mechs.

Or should i just change the whole gearbox to japan reconditioned ones? The reason is I heard that once the gearbox is opened, it would probably have problems after that. How much would this cost then?

Thanks a lot blush.gif

Can replace the worn out synchro. However, the workmanship cost would be high. So asking for opinions smile.gif

Thanks guys for the comments.

Went to the mechanic last week and he told me that its not my synchro...my clutch is actually the main problem cry.gif

According to him, if my synchro is gone, whenever i shift into 2nd gear, the grinding sound will always be there ( not sometimes have and sometimes don't). He also fully whacked my car (with me inside) to prove to me that its my clutch that needs replacing. After 5-10minutes whacking, my gears are totally sizzling hot and hard to move into all gears.

However i do have some doubts...as what i think is, if clutch gone, wouldn't all of my gears have sound when shifting? I do admit that 2nd to 3rd gear also sometimes have sound (but rarely) but downshifting from 3rd to 2nd is the most painful.

He says its confirmed. Clutch need change, synchro still ok. Total damage for kayaba japan racing clutch is rm1200 include workmanship... cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif Then he say no need pay deposit, he order 1st. If i really want then only i come next week. rclxub.gif

My ride is a toyota ae101 with 4age blacktop 6 speed manual..

Help!!

Just thought of this, why is it has to be Racing Clutch in first point? I know blacktop is an interesting engine, as well driven one. Even if the mechanic is correct you may just set down with normal clutch system at lower price ?

Planning to use the car for another 10 years as well as some spirited driving. Also, the clutch set have been replaced around 1 year ago for RM505 by the previous owner (guess this is a very cheap set, not sure what brand). Also heard that the difference is quite significant from good racing clutch to normal ones. Also from the mechanic advise, if want reliable, better take japan racing clutch.

Overall, I love my car. So willing to sacrifice to built her up to her best condition as long as I can afford it. But still pain to see 1.2k fly away...
