is not having autofocus a big issue for UWA?

fisheye easy to MF.

hey guys! appreciate some opinion here

i'm thinking of getting a used 18-200 VR1. main reason is i need a wide angle lens (well 18mm kinda counts as wide angle)

the thing is, i cant afford one so im probably going to sell off my 85mm 1.8G for it. the reason i bought the 85mm is to get full body portrait shots with nice bokeh (see below). can the 18-200 VR1 produce a similar shot (at longer focal length, smaller aperture)?

user posted image

if no, then ill probably just get an 18-55. what do you think?

u cannot compare between zoom and prime bokeh. its just not fair unless its 70-200 we talking about ;P
*
i suspect at 200mm, f/5.6 can produce good full body portraits as well. i'm curious how does it compare to a 85mm, f/1.8 shot.

bokeh is affected by both the aperture and focal length. i want to see the comparison between the effects of each. i think that's a fair question smile.gif

Well I cant get to technical with you on that, after all I'm just starting out, its just the feeling I get from first impression (and maybe different build, i guess?), but thats the initial factors why I'm starting off with Nikon. Anyhow, if I somewhat turn pro and understand more then I'll compare teeth to teeth later  rolleyes.gif

ANYWAY, I'm still not sure if I should go for D5100 or D3200!

I love portrait and macro shots, but I guess those I can optimize from the lenses I buy in the future? So what should I look for in the camera body to help make my decision? Hope to hear your wise opinions smile.gif

both D5100 and D3200 are very good. i'd lean towards the D5100 for the screen though tongue.gif

Get one before the wedding. You'll be amazed with what the flash can do.
*
yeah i guess i should. i never really like the bulk and the weight balance. would an SB400 do a good job or should i just go for an SB700?

off shoe? try remote cord + flash

QUOTE(bad melatonin @ Oct 19 2012, 02:03 AM)
if u hv money go wt SB700 or straight SB910. biggrin.gif
if budget constrained, no problem, just go wt 3rd party flash eg. Yongnuo basic ttl speedlite YN-468II. i think price around RM250 ~ 280. it does hv optical slave built in which u can trigger it off camera using ur d40 onboard flash. nod.gif
*
does a remote cord work with the yongnuo? how much would a remote cord cost?

remote flash cord would work with any flash unit. not sure wats the price now but I got mine I think under 50RM. One of my fav tools. For me its enough of a distance to make a difference. you got to experiment if you like it or not. I use it in product photography as well. CLS is good but I dont like killing the lifespan of the built in flash on my d80 n d300.

Problem with optical trigger is, if your in lets say a actual wedding scenario, you will also have a lot of other ppl w/ camera. and your optical trigger would be triggered by flash, ANY flash from compact to even handphones w/ xenon flash bulbs.  So your most likely to deplete your batt juice before u get to use it yourself hahaha. Unless you tell everyone to not take photo it kinda might work.

And another nice modifier is the Demb diffuser pro. Gives off pretty sweet light. Even with flash mounted on hot shoe. U might want to look into that as well.

If you want to pop your flash far far away then maybe can investigate in remote triggers. xD thumbup.gif plant a few light stands all around the main area with triggers and flashes and your good to go!  thumbup.gif
*
holy crap! shakehead.gif you're right about other people's camera setting off my flash hahaha. that would suck tongue.gif thanks for the heads up. now i realise optical trigger is a very bad idea.

remote triggers errrrrr if i can afford that, i wouldn't have to ask here LOL.

thanks for the remote cord recommendation. i'll consider it. i've been reading Tangent's blog on on-camera flash, he's getting really good results. i'll get an SB700 first and practice2. if no need off-camera flash then good la, one free hand tongue.gif

see how the center flower stems are sharper compared to the flower itself. that's not very good.

DOF (depth of field) refers to a range of distance in front of the camera that will be in focus (sharp). in this case, only the stem is in your focus range, but the flower and the background is not (that's why they're blurry).

so DOF can both be a good thing and a bad thing. the good thing about your photo is the background is blur. this is good so the background wont be distracting. but the bad thing about your photo is your subject (the flower) is blurred as well.

the two main things that control DOF is Aperture (your lens can open wide and small just like your eyes...aperture is how big the opening is) and focal length (distance between you and your subject). this means there are two things you can try to improve:

1) easiest is just take the photo from a further distance. you can later crop (cut off the sides) the photo on your PC. unfortunately this also makes the background less blur (or less "bokeh"). just try to find a good balance smile.gif

2) if you have a camera with manual controls (or any DSLR and interchangeables), set to Aperture Priority mode. normally there's a dial on top of ur camera and you switch it to 'A' or 'Av' (canon). take multiple exact shots while you increase and increase the aperture 'F' number. you'll see the higher number makes a larger 'range' of things in focus (a deeper DOF) so you can have more of the flower in focus.

BUT....shooting at this range (near closest focus distance) with small aperture is also hard to get the flower petal and the middle part in focus, dept of field goes even smaller when the focal length increase
*
i find it the opposite. it's easier for me to get more things in focus if i shoot from afar. seems that you're also (adversely) implying that decreasing focal length would increase depth of field. this means if Pro3363 shoots closer to the flower, he would get more in focus. this is of course not true.

QUOTE(gerald7 @ Oct 19 2012, 09:08 PM)
nothing wrong with on shoe flash, jst try to bounce to larger white source (such as walls) to 'amplify' the light. But bear in mind if its a chinese wedding u will be bouncing into a lot of red! LOL
*
i haven't got the chance to survey the location yet. i've looked at a lot of great photos made simply by using one on shoe flash; i'm convinced!! praying for company bonus tongue.gif

Hello guys... Is your 35mm 1.8g focusing ring rotate a little more rough compared to the 50mm 1.8g? It is sort of like being able to feel every single cog of it... I just bought a new one online so couldn't compare it
*
you also own a 50/1.8G?

*
i see. i always see people buying either one of those. u have both thumbup.gif

i wont call the focus ring of my 35mm "able to feel every single cog" though. i can feel like there's a gear somewhere but not that pronounced
