I had my internship with Petronas Carigali miri for 8 months in 2011. From my point of view, it really depends on which department you're attached in. I didnt learn much from my department, but they also allow you to be attached to different department for a certain period like 2 weeks, 1 month. This allow you to grasp knowledge from various disciplines.

I can't say much about Nippon though, but it is also operating company like petronas, but smaller. I believe their working culture is different. Policies might be different too. For example, petronas doesnt allow interns to go offshore. I believe Nippon does allow such thing. Try asking Nippon yourself

Just go to petronas even if they give you to do admin job you can still learn by watching, talking to others and build youre network there...
Most of oil and gas project come from petronas so if youre have a network there you have an advantage when working plus they have a lot of division just go around and ask what are their job scope, what they do, what kind of software they are using....same goes to other company as well.
In my place intern only can join purchasing, planning and internal sales but doesn't mean they can't come to engineering guy and ask what they do....

I have been rejected for many times for applying internship in Miri. Now i realize that  it's hard to join without proper network/connection. I need to have my intern on 1st July and still finding now.
