Sifus, i have few questions here.

i just recently graduated from local uni, in EE eng. major in instrumentation & control. I have spent few months applying for jobs and went to several interviews. Its been my dream to get into o&g sector upon my graduation.

i just been offered a job as application engineer at national instruments (NI), albeit the company business is not into o&g but more to manufacturing and testing for electronic kinda companies. Its main products are Labview data acquisition cards, for engineering projects.

although the package offered is quite attractive for fresh graduate, but l'm thinking on the career prospect down over the years in term of experience and salary growth. the offer is not as high as big o&g players but i can say its above average. So should i accept the offer or reject it. My main concern is whether i able to jump into o&g maybe after 5 years over there, but my experience maybe cannot be related much to o&g.

3 years is also a long time to spend haha. But maybe after 1+ years and try to jump into o&g again, but then the time spent over there cant be considered as experience right (to apply position in o&g)? yeah, maybe i accept the offer first, receiving monthly salary rather than sitting at home try to find one, and along the way, find opportunity to get into o&g

From your opinion, if we earn 400K here in M'sia, do you think it's worth it to move over to middle east with 600 - 700K offer? I know cost of living is quite high (esp accommodation, school fees even dining out). I would think the lifestyle of 400K in M'sia is much better than 600 - 700K in Middle East. But from your experiences living in middle east, is this true?

thanks for advice. Yes, money and cents are just part of the deal. We look at different angles as well such as lifestyle, career development, etc.
I read a lot of expats review on living/working in middle east, but need some inputs (carry a lot of weight) from M'sian as well. thanks for your advice too.
To be clear, it's annual household income. Loss of income is expected since only me will be working, thus we have to consider this factor as well.

Shell screwed-up FEED. They had to redesign the pontoons due to blunders in topsides weight estimates. That delayed the project close to 1.5 years.

That much? The amount I heard was USD60million. Petronas was mad like hell, and decided to teach Shell a lesson by pulling out the Gumusut topsides detailed design work from Houston and brought it to KL. (that in turn made Petronas push MMHE's capability of building both topsides and the hull to the limit! hahahaha!) Shell US was annoyed, but it's their own fault for taking Petronas for a ride during concept and feed stages. Ini kes Mat Saleh ingat Malaysians still live on trees.

On the 'concrete slab concept', where was the application of this concrete slab on the Gumusut FPS? I doUBT it's on the topsides since it would add weight to the topsides. I thought the hull (pontoons) wERE built from solid stiffened steel plates....

Try google Hays Oil and Gas Global Salary Guide 2012. You will see that last year Subsea Engineer is in demand and hence the higher salary in that career path. If you read up on news in Malaysia regarding subsea also you will see that the career path will be valuable here as well.
