QUOTE(jonchai @ Dec 19 2012, 05:20 PM) Google is also doing away with POP3. It will be replaced by self-signed certificates, I don't really know what it means, but meh.
The IMAP from Google isn't an industry standard IMAP protocol. Google has tweaked it so much that Microsoft really has to study (like Apple did) its API in order to implement a Google IMAP on Windows Phone. Standard IMAP protocols are supported on Windows Phone, that's not an issue. Google is a different beast altogether. ah makes sense. no biggie then. hardly ever get "urgent" emails on my personal mail anyway. Just forward them all to my outlook.com

Just forward them all to my outlook.com That's a wise choice Afterall, I find Outlook to be more intuitive. It's just so much easier to use compared to Gmail, which hides all the damn buttons after the updates. On top of that, I find Outlook to be more responsive and fluid

Urgh. This puts a bad taste in my mouth about purchasing this. I believe the 8X already has the Portico update available OTA?

You're misreading the link you quoted. Since Malaysian Lumias aren't carrier bound, from the link, those with carrier-linked Lumias would get the update faster than those without carrier-linked. Which points towards the Malaysian version, which means at the earliest, February 2013.
I'm not a fan of waiting, and waiting for 2 months in tech years is a lifetime. What I dont understand is why the non-carrier-linked Lumias had to wait for the carrier-linked ones are given priority for update first. Wouldn't it be easier to update the non-carrier-linked ones since they should universal across all region, compared to the complexities of those linked to carriers?

Those linked once are the ppl that push their sales just like iphone. Its not apple selling iphone but telco selling the iphones

Carrier or non-carrier shouldn't matter if the update system is designed properly and implemented efficiently. iPhones/iPads all get the same update within 24 hours of each other.

My point exactly. Why segregate between the non-carrier-bounded and the carrier-linked version?

QUOTE Availability for International Lumia 920 and other carriers
Now for some not-so great news. For those who are not on AT&T or Rogers, the Portico OS update and firmware enhancements are not expected to go live until early February 2013.
Nokia is working with carrier partners to make sure the experience is top notch and that there are no issues when installing the update, resulting in damaged or sub-optimal performance. Of course schedules can change and unbranded devices may get it earlier than carrier-supported ones. as above quote from WPCentral, it indicates that priority is towards non-carrier-linked phones. why are they segregated? i am not sure but i assume its because there is custom firmware for carrier-lock and these are usually tested by carrier before released to public. Therefore it should be easier to update non-carrier-linked 920s

All these "can change" and "may" points towards probabilities and not confirmations. The only thing CONFIRMED are the AT&T and Rogers 920s getting their updates NOW. I dont base my purchases on "probabilities".
Maybe I'm used to Apple's way of doing updates, in which they've set dates for ALL iOS devices to arrive on a specific deadline. Not half here half there.

Guys, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but from a WP perspective how are the apps doing? I just want to know because i have been an android user for 2 years and I am considering a change to WP8 either this or next year. So I am not comparing to Android, I am just asking you guys as a potential WP user in the coming months
