Multitasking as in instantly resume to where you left off from an apps (like how Meego and symbian does)

I think i read somewhere on wmpoweruser, they say multitasking only worked for gps enabled apps / first party apps for wp8..so for now i guess the multitaskingdoesn't work too different with wp7.5

If that's the sort of multitasking you're looking for, then I'm pleased to tell you that that's exactly how multitasking works in WP / Windows 8. There are 3 states to an app, active, suspended and terminated. When you switch away, the app is put into suspended mode. As soon as you switch back, it'll be just the way it was. Of course, this is app dependent, depending on how the developers craft them, but all necessary SDKs are there.

Also, to top it off, an app can also multitask (much like PC, suspended but continue to work) under a few conditions. The most common scenario is download / upload. This will also keep WP7 connected to WiFi, even when it is put to standby. That's how KeepAlive app works, by continuously sending IGMP packets to a server.

GPS is another such scenario.

Thanks for the clarification, but it's quite of confusing when some wp users say apps will only be "re-launched" instead of "multitask" rclxub.gif
somehow I think I should wait first hand review after wp8 launched to judge sweat.gif

Like I said, it depends on the developer. Take Whatsapp for example, when you go back to start, open another app, switch back to Whatsapp, you'll still be in the same chat window that you were in previously.

in other words, multitasking is not "supported in nature" but developers had to activate them whilst designing their apps, so it works differently as what meego and symbian does ;.;

but it doesn't matter for now, let's wait until 29th :/

Err not exactly. If you look at the code (if you're even into coding), it's just a simple if / else block. So it is indeed supported in nature. Just a matter of implementation. Developers don't even need to "activate" them, just place the code within the block, done.

Right,i mean developers don't even need to do anything xD

But I'm more curious about native coding on wp8,iinm they said wp8 shared core as win 8, dies that mean theoretically we could run pc application in wp with slight modification?
I believe gamers will be bloody excited as well to play some light PC game on it tongue.gif

Well, native coding really means that apps can now be written in C++ without restrictions. This means apps can be written to directly interact with the hardware. Also, most games on other platforms were written using C++ as well. So porting over would be a walk in the park.

Wrong. We can't run any PC applications (all based on x86) on WP. They share kernel, network stacks, memory management and so on. These are the core. WP8 only inherits a subset of Windows 8, namely the ARM part. So it is only able to run ARM apps (Metro) while Windows 8 is capable of running regular x86 and ARM apps.

Oh, how can I forget. WP8 also shares a subset of DirectX 9 (could be full set, to be confirmed), the most popular gaming API out there.

Edit: These are only based on leaked documents. Since WP8 SDKs aren't available yet, I can't truly tell the difference between W8 and WP8 smile.gif

Do you have any programming / development background? If you do, it'd be easy. Otherwise, it'd take a lot of time and effort on your end
