Guys, I'm looking at a few of the SSDs. Is IOPS important for us on daily usage of the drive?

I guess all brand of SSD will show no huge difference in normal daily usage right?

I'm looking for a 120GB SSD and I don't know which one to pick.

Intel 520
Samsung 840 Pro
Plextor M5 Pro
Corsair Force GS

My requirements and priority of the SSD goes like this, reliability > price > good access time > consistent read and write speed.

On daily usage, you won't notice the difference.

OS boot up time... all within the 30 seconds.

Loading apps... all almost the same.

Only doing benchmark see the difference. But you're not going to do benchmark daily right? that will burden the SSD as benchmark also stress the SSD to the limit.

Plextor M5S 128GB SSD RM 287 @ Jayacom

cheap, reliable and stable. And the best part is you get extra 8GB space compared with 120GB SSD

I built a IB rig for my friend and I was using 128GB M5S also. I think I'm better off with M5Pro or Intel 520.

If the game has already read all the data it needs from the HDD/SSD, no.

If the game dynamically loads data while you're playing, you may see less stutter when doing or encountering new things from a cold start. It has been a rather popular observation for some people who play Diablo 3 and upgraded to SSD. For example, smooth first-time casting of skills from a cold start.

On the other hand, some games may not benefit from SSDs. Internet flash games for example probably wouldn't be affected.

The read/write performance is good enough and hasn't seen significant improvement in a long while. The current focus in SSD improvement is in IOPS performance consistency.

In addition regarding to whether SSD improve gaming performance, there's some game like "Fallout 3, Borderlands 2, Rage" have a features call "hidden loading". Running these games under SSD will reduce the time taken for "hidden loading" making it unnoticeable. So technically yes, SSD improves gaming performance, but not too much.

Planning on building my first pc in August/September.
A friend of mine is selling his Intel 510 Series 250GB SSD (owned for a year) for AUD$120 (RM360 approx.).
EDIT: He is also selling his Corsair Force 120GB SSD (owned for a year and a half) for AUD$60 (RM180 approx.).

Since my SSD knowledge is sub par, what do you guys think about buying a secondhand SSD? What is the selling price of those SSDs in Malaysia?

Not recommended, especially for Discontinued SATA II SSDs and with the price like that I rather buy a new one IMHO.
Some hardware are just not suitable for 2nd hand re-sale, and SSD are one of em.

I thought the Intel 510 series is SATA III?

Yes, but they're discontinued,

Main point is, get a new one, because old used SSD tend to have minor defects. (that's why they keep making new model of SSD to eliminate bugs and known defects)
