Sorry, I do not know of any language program sponsored by Thai Government in Penang. Added on August 16, 2012, 4:25 pmQUOTE(pingy_ping @ Aug 15 2012, 10:05 PM) just show up will do? any catch? Just show up will do. There is no catch in this free language class. The salary of the Thai teacher from Bangkok is paid by the Thai Government. Currently, students attending Thai Language classes at Wat Chetawan are paying RM30 per month. These classes are conducted by private tutor, volunteer and Thai monk. They are not administered by the temple. Thus, I believe that all current classes will be replaced by Thai Government sponsored classes in September. Thank you You do not have to give your name to reserve a seat. All you have to do is to sit in for the meeting on that day to hear what the Thai teacher is planning for the Thai language classes. He/she must see how many persons are interested to attend classes. Currently there are about 20 beginner students and about 10 intermediate students attending Saturday and Sunday classes. Each class is about 1 1/2 hrs and they are conducted in English. I believe that they will be coming to the meeting to register for the new classes.

Mejar, we have to thank you for your constant dedication in helping to announce and coordinate the classes.
For those who are interested to learn Thai language, you would meet with other fellow Malaysians from all walks of life who would also share your interest.
Attending the class at Wat Chetawan last year had helped me able to read and write- so I can read basic signs when I travel to Thailand. I am grateful for the sincerity of the teachers who had taught the Thai language.
Usually we contribute RM30 which we would use for cost of photostating materials, and as part of donation to the temple as we are using the facilities. The teachers teach on voluntarily basis.
But for this time, the collaboration between the Thai and Malaysian government, the classes are held for free.
