Vettel becomes youngest point scorer

BMW Sauber's stand-in racer Sebastian Vettel made the most of his Formula One debut with a first-rate drive to eighth in Sunday's United States Grand Prix. Aged just 19, he becomes the youngest driver to score a world championship point.

Third driver Vettel was only named as Robert Kubica's temporary replacement on Thursday, after FIA doctors decided Kubica should not race until he had completely recovered from his high-speed crash at last weekend's Montreal event.

Although Vettel had worked wonders in the F1.07 during qualifying on Saturday - taking seventh on the grid - it looked as though the German's nerves had got the better of him at the start of the race. Struggling to get away quickly enough, he initially lost four places.

But with David Coulthard's Red Bull retiring soon after and Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella taking to the grass, Vettel was able to reclaim two places. Gradually growing in confidence, he managed to keep the F1.07 on track and push enough to keep up with the Red Bull of Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli's Toyota.

In fact in the later stages Vettel even began to pressurise Webber for a points-scoring position. But unable to find a way past the Australian's RB3, Vettel was eventually gifted a point thanks to the late retirement of fellow countryman Nico Rosberg.

Vettel's one championship point was BMW Sauber's only reward at Indianapolis, after team mate Nick Heidfeld was forced to retire on lap 60 after a hydraulic leak. Despite enduring their worst race of the season, the German-Swiss team remain third in the constructors' table, with a 14-point advantage over Renault.

bmw were not really up to the pace to fight for a podium.... i guess heidfeld was fighting more with the renult than the ferrari b4 retiring.
*
u right, they have no enuf pace for podium,bmw-renault battle so interesting,i predict McLaren will win, then Ferrari 2nd,Renault and BMW will fight for 3rd

QUOTE(sqwerk2 @ Jun 19 2007, 09:20 AM)
the current BMW pace is ok, above average, if compared to yesteryears. this season they are stronger, and i believe they can give ferrari a run for their money for the second spot if not the championship spot.

good work from Mario Tessien,i think BMW will more competative next year, maybe can win a at least one GP

Kubica confident of race return in France

BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica believes medical clearance for him to race in next weekend's French Grand Prix should be a mere formality. Kubica is due to be checked by FIA medical staff at Magny-Cours on Thursday.

Following his high-speed crash during the Canadian Grand Prix, Kubica was advised to sit out the following Indianapolis round as a precaution.

However, after what will be almost three weeks of rest, the Polish driver is confident of being allowed back into the cockpit in France.

"I may not have been given the green light to compete in the USA, but I hope the medical examination at Magny-Cours will be a formality," he said. "The reason why I wasn't allowed to drive at Indianapolis had nothing to do with how I felt; the problem was the risk involved in suffering a second accident within such a short space of time.

"That's also why I wasn't allowed to test. I've used the time to focus intensively on preparing for the next race. I can't wait to get back into the car."

Should Kubica not be cleared to drive, BMW Sauber third driver Sebastian Vettel will again step into the breach to partner Nick Heidfeld.

Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (4th, 1m 15.493s):
"It was good, a positive weekend and I am happy the car is working well. I was happy about the balance of the car yesterday, and again today as we have improved it and this morning's lap times were very consistent. I think a better result than this wasn't possible, but I feel we are in good shape for the race, although I think Renault here are closer to us than we are to Ferrari. Overtaking here is very difficult and that was why it was very important to qualify in front. I think we have to make a good start and keep up our speed for the whole race."

Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (7th, 1m 15.900s):
"The qualifying was okay, but not particularly good so I am not completely satisfied with my grid position. On my last outing in the first chicane the rear was very nervous and the car was oversteering. Nevertheless, the balance of the car today was better than on Friday. My lap times from this morning didn't reflect the true performance because I had too much traffic. My back didn't cause me any trouble at all. It was a painful muscle cramp and this was treated successfully last night. Obviously Ferrari is stronger than us and Renault has caught up. For tomorrow the weather forecast predicts rain and I would welcome a wet race. We haven't had one for quite a while and I like driving in the rain a lot. It could mix up the field and provide good entertainment for the spectators."

Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (4th):
"This was a good race for the team with us finishing fourth and fifth, and it has been a very good weekend for me. It was a very quiet race. I made quite a good start but we were on the dirty side with Lewis Hamilton, so had no chance to overtake. After that I was close to him just once when he was coming out of the pits and we had a short fight, but he had new tyres, braked later into the hairpin and overtook me again. The last 20 laps were about bringing the car home for a good result for the team, as Lewis was a long way in front and Nick (Heidfeld) behind. The car was very good, physically I am a hundred per cent and mentally too, and I could do another race now."

Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (5th):
"I am very happy with the result. It was a great race for us, and we scored valuable points. At the start both Renaults went to the middle of the track, I tried to overtake Giancarlo Fisichella on the right hand side, but he moved over, which was not correct. The fights with Fernando Alonso were a lot of fun and also useful for my result. At times I had to defend hard, but I think from both sides it was fair play. It was not easy to keep him behind me, especially as in the middle stint he was very fast with obviously a low fuel load. Ferrari was very strong here as we already saw at the last test. You should never discount Renault as they are the reigning champions."

Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber (3rd):
"This was a superb race for me. I was on the podium for the second time this year, and podiums were on our - to do - list for this season. I had a bad start on the dirty side of the track and lost a place to Kimi Raikkonen, but anyway both Lewis Hamilton and he have clearly been faster today, so a better start would not have changed much. I had some difficulties with the second and third sets of tyres and it was not easy to race against a 'ghost'. Of course I knew I was racing Fernando Alonso but, due to the different strategies, he wasn't visible to me. We decided early this weekend to go for a three stop strategy because the softer tyres caused trouble. I only used them in the last stint when my car was relatively light and the track had a lot of rubber. Fernando was faster than me almost everywhere and put me under pressure, but he didn't have a proper chance to overtake as this is very difficult here."

Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber (5th):

"I am happy with the pace. Today the car worked well, and my race was pretty good. I had to start with used tyres, therefore, the first laps were very difficult for me. However, after the first stop the pace was really good and then I closed the gap to Nick (Heidfeld) to three seconds. Without yesterday's problems we could have finished a lot better. Nick had a good result and this is good for the team."
