Winson Seow says sorry

PETALING JAYA: A man accused of faking his medical qualifications and for misleading the public about his relief work in war-torn countries and disaster areas has apologised.

The statement, published on Winson Seow's Facebook page yesterday and written in Mandarin, read: “I have misled the reporters who interviewed me and I sincerely apologise. I hope everyone will forgive me.”

The 26-year-old's story came to light earlier this year when local dailies wrote about his inspiring tales of serving in Third World countries and an autobiography documenting his journey, To Serve With Love, was published.

However, there were several discrepancies in his educational background, including the universities he claimed to have graduated from, leading to a public outcry.

According to the statement, Seow said he had taken a three-year course in traditional Chinese medicine at the Beijing Chinese Medical University in China before signing up to do relief work with International Medical Relief in 2010, during which he rendered care in disaster areas in Senegal, Haiti and Peru.

“I decided to go to war zone countries to help people suffering there. I would like to clarify that I am just a trainee in treating people,” read the statement.

Earlier, Seow had claimed that he performed surgery on victims of bomb blasts and shootings.

Seow said he would return all the donations he had collected amounting to RM38,099.97 through his site, adding that all versions of his book would be removed from bookstores.

“I would like to apologise especially to those who bought my book, the publishers and sponsors and I hope that everyone can forgive me,” he said.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Winson Seow has said in past media interviews that he graduated from Peking University Health Science Centre, King's College London and The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Seow, who completed his secondary school education at Pay Fong High School, Malacca in 2005, had apparently said that he held qualifications to be a trauma surgeon, emergency physician and psychologist.

However, Sin Chew wrote to the universities and all of them replied saying they had no record of Seow.

Really shocking for me from a good person become a scam and for a short period become a doctor..
He told me he is doing electrical in this Pay Fong school and he don't like it..That's all i got from him..

i think it's obvious to anybody who is an actual doctor that he's a fake. i doubt he have the right knowledge to treat people

PEMUDA ini teringin benar menjadi seorang pakar bedah plastik kerana pendapatan lumayan yang boleh diraihnya. Bagaimanapun, segalanya berubah pada empat tahun lalu.

“Semasa mengikuti penerbangan dari New York ke London, tiba-tiba pesawat yang saya naiki menjunam pada kedudukan 45 darjah.

“Saya dapat rasakan pesawat yang berada pada ketinggian 7,500 meter itu seperti ditarik ke bawah. Saya hanya fikirkan kematian,” cerita Dr. Winson Seow, 26, yang pada waktu itu sedang menuntut di Sekolah Perubatan dan Pergigian King’s College London.

Tidak lama kemudian, semasa berkunjung ke Mumbai, India, Winson dihidangkan pula dengan kejadian seorang kanak-kanak perempuan cedera parah akibat dilanggar sebuah kereta di sebuah kampung.

Selepas peristiwa itu, Winson sedar betapa singkatnya hidup ini. Dirinya yang sebelum ini berkiblatkan harta dan wang tiba-tiba diselubungi perasaan ingin membantu sesama manusia.

“Saya mula bertanya diri sendiri apakah saya perlu menjadi pakar bedah plastik semata-mata untuk mengejar kemewahan.

“Insiden itu menyebabkan saya tekad mahu menghulurkan bantuan dengan berkhidmat sesama manusia,” katanya yang menyertai International SOS, sebuah syarikat yang menyediakan perkhidmatan perubatan untuk operasi antarabangsa, sebagai doktor bedah trauma.

Selama dua tahun menyertai International SOS, Winson telah bertugas di rantau bergolak dan dilanda bencana alam seperti Haiti, Somalia, Kenya, Senegal dan Libya. Bagi setiap tugasan, Winson dikehendaki berkhidmat selama antara sebulan hingga dua bulan di sesebuah negara.

Menjadi seorang ‘doktor medan perang’ bukanlah sesuatu yang diinginkan bapa Winson. “Bapa saya yang merupakan doktor ortopedik dan pengamal perubatan tradisional terkejut dan beberapa kali memujuk supaya saya memikirkan semula hasrat itu,” beritahu Winson.

Apa yang dibimbangi bapanya, Dr. Seow Teck Shong, 55, menjadi kenyataan tidak lama kemudian.

Winson dihantar bertugas di Mogadishu, Somalia pada tahun 2010. Somalia ialah negara kedua yang dikunjunginya selepas Haiti.

Menurutnya, negara itu dibelenggu masalah kebuluran dan pertelagahan antara puak. “Pada suatu hari semasa saya merawat seorang pesakit di dalam khemah, tidak semena-mena sekumpulan pemberontak bersenjatakan pistol menceroboh khemah kami.

“Tiba-tiba salah seorang daripada mereka yang bertopeng hitam meluru ke arah saya dan terus menumbuk muka saya hingga terjatuh. Saya begitu cemas dan terpaksa menahan kesakitan. Mujurlah selepas penterjemah kami berunding, kumpulan itu pergi meninggalkan kami,” cerita Winson.

Namun, kejadian kekasih Winson, seorang doktor British berusia 24 tahun, terbunuh akibat terkena peluru pemberontak telah meninggalkan kesan yang sangat mendalam dalam diri Winson.

Tragedi itu berlaku beberapa minggu selepas peristiwa Winson ditumbuk oleh pemberontak Somalia.

“Pada masa itu, saya dan kekasih sedang merawat pesakit dan mangsa yang tercedera. Tiba-tiba peluru yang dilepaskan sekumpulan pengganas terkena leher kekasih saya menyebabkan dia terjelepuk di atas tanah yang berbatu kasar itu.

“Saya menyangka dia hanya cedera ringan tetapi terperanjat apabila mendapati dia sudah tidak bernyawa,” cerita beliau yang enggan mendedahkan nama kekasih yang dikenalinya di kampus universiti itu.

Winson juga mempunyai banyak pengalaman yang tidak dapat dilupakan semasa menjejakkan kaki ke Haiti yang baru sahaja dilanda gempa bumi berukuran 7 pada skala Richter 12 Januari 2010. Dalam kejadian itu, seramai 220,000 rakyat Haiti terkorban.

Suasana di situ begitu menyedihkan, ujar Winson. Banyak mayat terperangkap di celah runtuhan bangunan manakala wabak penyakit seperti kolera sedang merebak.

“Apa yang saya dengar, berlori-lori mayat ditenggelamkan ke dalam sebuah tasik di negara itu. Ia dikatakan amalan biasa orang Haiti. Malangnya, air tasik itu juga menjadi sumber air minuman semasa bencana berkenaan. Ia sudah pasti menyebabkan wabak kolera menular,” terang beliau.

Mulia

Kemuliaan hati Winson bukan sekadar menghulurkan kepakarannya bahkan dia tidak kisah membelanjakan hampir semua wang gajinya untuk membeli kaki palsu dan peralatan perubatan untuk mangsa bencana alam dan perang berkenaan.

Kehidupan mewah yang diimpikan Winson sememangnya telah berubah 360 darjah di zon perang terbabit. Winson memberitahu, dia akan bangun seawal pukul 4 pagi setiap hari. Dia gemar bermain gitar dan biola sambil menyanyi bersama kanak-kanak dan kaum ibu di tempat terbabit sebelum memulakan tugas pada pukul 8 pagi.

“Kadang-kadang saya bermain bola keranjang dengan kanak-kanak di kawasan lapang berhampiran khemah perubatan kami.

“Tiada jaminan nyawa kami akan selamat. Malah, untuk melelapkan mata selama lima minit pun agak sukar. Ini kerana saya perlu bersedia jika berlaku kecemasan atau diserang pemberontak,” katanya.

Ditanya mengenai makanan, Winson menjelaskan, makanan hariannya hanya sebuku roti yang keras tidak ubah seperti batu dan dimakan bersama serbuk cili ‘tobasco’. Winson yang mengambil suplemen vitamin setiap hari berkata dia cuma tidur bertilamkan batu dan bertemankan sehelai selimut.

Dia juga mengaku berat badannya menyusut secara drastik.
