Guys, any tips for drawing realistic faces?

I can draw anime style faces, but I failed miserably at realistic faces. I been trying to draw my friend for ages, but I just can't seem make it resemble the person or realistic enough. Facing troubles especially at the eye and mouth and the overall shading I should use.

I need to reach a level where other people can see the picture and recognize the person I am drawing.

My skill levels is lower than the quoted Adamiquesce picture above.

I look at some tutorials, but none seem to help me at drawing better.

More info - I draw with purely pencil and paper, I don't use photoshop or anything to touch up.

These videos are useful to show how to draw the basic structure of the head:

They're actually simplified instructions from this book: https://archive.org/details/andrew-loomis-d...-the-head-hands.

Learn to draw a basic, generic face first using realistic construction methods, then in order capture your friend's likeness, you just need to adjust the placement of the construction lines used to create a realistic head, so that they match the proportions of your friend's face.

Interesting... Will give it a shot, although I'm an illustrator, not a fine artist XD

Looking at the "BEST OF DIGITAL ART", I have already thought this is not my game, honestly I'm hardly impressed by fine arts, maybe it is not technically superior to illustration type of arts or concept arts, no real skills involved.

I mean look at that, just give people the impression that you intended something deep (although you just flying about your brush thoughtless) and you are good to go! rclxms.gif

yeahhhhh that's the thing about fine arts sometimes, needs to be "deep" and "meaningful".

I, on the other hand, just say "f--k it" and draw porn. So eh.

It makes me wonder if those who do digital fine art actually just doodling with different brushes only...or they just sketch on the train using sketchbook and voila, a masterpiece formed. But of course they would tell they wreck their brain in the studio trying to produce those arts. Who knows, I'm just skeptical with fine artist lol.

Oh, I really dislike how plebs (non-artist people) consider what is "fine art". I believe that illustrations can be fine art and vice versa. Heck, all those classical paintings people like to rave about in museums, like da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and Rembrandt's "Night Watch" and the like? They're all technically paid commissions/illustrations.

Even in the terms and conditions, they only define "professional" as this:

QUOTE
Participants must not be professional artists. Individuals who have mounted at least one exhibition at any established art gallery or museum in any part of the world (in Samsung's opinion) are considered professional artists for the purposes of the Award Program and are not eligible for the Award Program.

UHM.

THAT MEANS PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS WORKING IN THE CONCEPT ART INDUSTRY CAN JOIN, RIGHT?

As long as they haven't had any kind of art gallery or museum display tongue.gif (which a lot don't).

idk if this fits here, just my mural work done during form 3 in secondary school some 15 years ago, not sure if still there. the mural is in front of school library and it's meant for program nilam to encourage students spend more of their time reading.

my friend said the colors look dirty, some mistaken the mural for a beach. it's actually a sea bottom with water caustics in the background. students will submit their drawing of marine creatures and paste it on the mural. that's why most of the space is empty.

thanks for viewing btw.

At 15 years old? Pretty damn impressive. That's a very nice bit of work there.

Hm, I've always had interest in art, but I never practised it during my school years. Like, maybe 1-2 drawings a year? Definitely didn't draw ANYTHING during my SPM/STPM years.

It wasn't until I was around 20-ish, when I have a steady job AND a lot of free time, then I started drawing just to not get bored.

And I'm a competitive perfectionist, so when I do something, I make sure I'm always improving/growing in some way laugh.gif

wow, that's a really positive attitude in arts. what kinda drawing media you prefer? u do both manual and digital?

Haha, some artists don't like my approach, because I think discipline > "inspiration". If I only paint when I'm "inspired", I'll never get anything done.

Primarily digital. Traditional painting is just...messy laugh.gif and oil painting takes forever to dry.

Eh, most pro artists consider "sketches" to be "stuff that I don't consider finished"

They still might have messy during the base+construction stage.

Although, for "form" sketching (i.e. lineart sketching), one usually tries to be as precise as possible with each line, since the goal is to practice catching the forms/lines of a figure.

Contrast with value sketching, which is to practice capturing the values of an image, and may look a lot messier.

Most of these looks like a result of practice, because their hand-to-eye coordination has to be precise to get that level of "clean" in their lines.

Nice concept!

Maybe add a bit of contrasting teal/blue-green to the light shining from the figure's chest? Right now it's very monochrome in color scheme, nothing wrong with that but if it's a punch you're looking for some accents of contrast color won't hurt. It'll also make the red brighter, however.
