i wonder Legoland Msia will be profitable or not

Disneyland Hong Kong until now still in red  sweat.gif

and itchy hand of mine, just bought this Lego 6339

I was wondering about the profit that the park can generate. I remember when I was in Disneyland in Japan where it was packed as hell with people and people were buying lots of stuff inside. Of course Japanese are the kind of people who loved theme parks and they can run it very very well. Then the weather there is very cooling unlike here sweat.gif

I am quite worried about the price of Lego inside the park. There are 2 scenarios:-
1) Price cheaper than the whole M'sia - lots of people with annual pass are going to act like middleman and buy Lego in the park for resale. Postage is cheap, I remember the cost to Poslaju a Technic flagship box from Penang to KL is around RM 30.
2) Price similar to the RRP in all the shops in Malaysia - sales will be very bad as all the tourists are going to hold off buying Lego in the park. I can imagine every single tourist going to the park asking the tour guide in the bus if it is worth it to buy Lego in Legoland. What do you think the tourist guide will tell the tourist? What if the tourist go to Orchard road only to see the Police Station he bought for RM 550 only costs RM 400 after super big discount due to the Great Singapore sale? Me myself get all my large Lego sets online and not through TRU or Brickboy. Sometimes I do buy from TRU but that is when opening time or holiday discount period. Part of the profit to the park is through the sale of Lego.

Then there are prices of Lego accessories like stationary, water bottles etc. TRU themselves brought in some stationary sets and water bottles and those stuff cost a bomb shocking.gif Maybe it is due to the TRU mark-up and it is not through ALJ or Lego but the price is insane for China made stuff. Sadly the yellow color of the stuff is not the yellow Lego bricks are known for.

Thinking of going on opening day, but I think I want to do a 'wait and see' approach first. sweat.gif

QUOTE(dilvin @ Aug 13 2012, 09:47 AM)
Good analysis there. Rationally, the price should be cheaper inside LM as compared to Msia's RRP. Otherwise, visitors would complaint why would they buy things inside LM. But another view would be, the main income is from entrance fee and not retailing. LM might even argue, their shops has more variety or exclusive products only available inside LM. (That will also help TLG to jaga hati ALJ ). Hence the price is same as RRP

i really not sure. i just go a bad vibe, nothing will be cheap inside LM

One thing for sure, if it is cheaper than RRP, the scalpers will made a weekly (even daily) trip to LM and more online blogshops/shops/threads will suddenly appear after september 15th. Whoever is going, please help to report on its prices
As for exclusive sets, so far I see it is stuff like stationary, t-shirts, clothing, towels etc. I do not know if there is any sets which are exclusive to Legoland itself. There is however exclusive bricks based on certain special events. For us AFOL the main stuff we want is mainly for the bricks or sets only. I wonder how much are they going to charge for the pick a brick. If the price comes up more expensive than buying a modular building might as well buy a modular building for parts. I will seriously compare the RM/kg of a modular to that of the pick a brick. Unless of course they have rare colors like the green from green grocer (unlikely) or Maersk blue (more unlikely).

I foresee those retailers in Singapore will make a major killing if the price inside LM is expensive.

Oh, anyone will predict the mad rush to the Big shop at opening time to picit-picit all the Series 7? laugh.gif

Hey guys

Sorry for missing out on updating from Legoland today, my phone ran out of battery halfway.

Musha got most of it right - ALJ prices (ugh), although there were some positives.

I checked on Amazon the shipping weight of the Town Hall is 11 lbs. Assuming the town hall itself is 10.5 lbs, it will be around 4.8kg. Taking the RRP of the Town Hall of RM 899, the RM to kg for the Town Hall is RM 191 per kg or RM 19.10 per 100g which is still cheaper than the RM 30-RM35 per 100g. So if you want parts better off buying the Town Hall since you are getting a full building plus some minifigures (best man and the bride thumbup.gif ).

Unless there are rare bricks in rare colors like Maersk blue, Sand Green then it might be worth it to get a bucketload of bricks.

How is the selection of 5 digit set there? They say the Big Shop was supposed to have the best selection of Lego in SEA but I do not see the Town hall, Sopwith Camel, SSD, Maersk train etc. I read someone mentioned no LOTR which I think is ridiculous since there are LOTR sets everywhere.

If the prices are as what you have mentioned then I see no reason to buy the annual pass and visit the park often to get my Lego.

ALJ is the evil distributor responsible for notoriously high Lego prices in Malaysia. Basically, Lego prices in stores here are jacked up above and beyond what many Lego fans feel they should pay for sets. Sets in Singapore are much cheaper in Malaysia, for example.

Because they're the sole distributor, they pretty much have a complete monopoly and can dictate the prices they set without much fear of competition from anyone else.
*
Lol, you phrase it quite dramatic haha. But I do agree on the sole distributor part.

Waiting on Cafe Corner, stuck in customs. :/

It's true, modular building price go up faster than stock market. sweat.gif Last time Green Grocer and Cafe Corner so cheap only, now more than twice the price. That's why some people have to Bricklink the whole set aka buy each individual piece by piece.

I now have 4 modulars, GG, FB, Pet Shop and Grand Emporium. Using this few days to build them all since I want to see a row of them. Pet Shop and FB was MISB before this, GG and GE was taken apart and rebuild. Actually wanted to have the Town Hall too but still have not arrive yet. Oh well. I have build 3 already, only left the GE to rebuild.

I see some comments on the Best-Lock bricks. I have yet to try them out due to the high price of the sets. The price is quite expensive and the picture of the bricks and the minifigs does not look good. Another reason is due to the fact most of my budget is on the real Lego and nothing left for alternatives. sweat.gif

I feel Kre-O is a serious competitor to Lego, but Hasbro is doing it very wrong by pricing itself more expensive than Lego. The irony is that the Transformer and Battleship franchise is Hasbro's own theme, much like City and Friends are Lego's own theme. So there should not be any premium price to pay unlike Star Wars sets where part of the price goes to George Lucas' pocket.

If there is a clone brand which should be in TRU it is Oxford. some of their military sets are well designed.

In terms of building(technique and surprise element), value (no. of bricks/parts, including interior furnishings which can't be seen outside) and playability(like pet shop can split into two standalone buildings which I think it's cool)? Hope you don't mind sharing your thoughts wink.gif

You have not seen the Town Hall yet. brows.gif It is much taller and have a much higher piece count than the Fire Brigade. So far the best among the 4 is still the Green Grocer followed by the Fire Brigade. Both are HUGE and have detailed front façade.

With all the rage on figs these days... we should really start a collaborative effort to make vignettes (8x8) ,(12x12) or (16x16)  with local flavors.... then  find ways to exhibit them by connecting them to each other.  Maybe this can be our baby steps towards bigger things/events in the future.

We can make meaningful or sarcastic scenes  on current happenings in this country, from "broken public toilets"    until "bunch of yellow shirted figs with protest signs crammed into a 16x16 plate"  biggrin.gif

For me I would hit on even more kampung flavored vignette like "atuk handling monkey climbing up palm tree" or simply  "boy jumping into riverfrom tree branches"
*
I have already made a Cap Goh Meh vignette back during CNY time. Of course now it has been dissembled already.

As for the Bersih vignette, I believe everyone have to be top naked since all Lego minifig's skin is yellow. Also I do not think there are that many 'yellow' torso minifigs around.

Nice LDD of the Melaka clockhouse. Would like to see it in brick form.

I did make a minifig scale shop house before. Used to tumpang a bricklink bulk purchase to get all the white bricks and roof tiles. Even a simple building like this almost 800+ parts and then need to use some of my own parts as well. The 2x2 dark grey tiles alone almost 60 cents EACH.

Correct, it is the famous Lego bank from last time. The building was quite unique for its time with the truck and the angled doors. I still have most of the parts of it though.

On Eurobricks there are some AFOLs crying foul at TLG for originally pricing it at 139.90 Euros but later reverted to 179.90 Euros when TLG suddenly realize something. In fact there are posters on Eurobricks where people manage to buy it at the original cheaper price. sweat.gif

You can read the thread here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?...ic=70696&st=495

I too wanted the set since it is a great set to put it by my modular buildings. But after the price jumping by TLG the mood to buy it went out the window. vmad.gif

Hi everyone, need some help from the Lego experts here  biggrin.gif

I'm trying to get the Ninjago Lloyd ZX spinner set (9574) for my son but I'm not sure whether it's been released here or not.

Lego.com have listed the release date as 26th September, but I know it's already on sale on eBay.

I've asked some of the toy shops here but I getting different answers. For instance, some Toys R Us branches said they were sold out but others said the stock hasn't come in yet. Same goes for different branches of Isetan's toy sections.

I called up Brickboys Toys (Gardens) and they said it hasn't been released yet. But yesterday, my son's classmate said he bought the last one from Bangsar Shopping Centre (not sure which shop).

I'm totally confused now. Is it out yet or not?  icon_question.gif

I was a Brickboy yesterday when I saw the Green ninja spinner set. In fact at the same time I saw a mother buying the green ninja for her son. sweat.gif Did not see any new ninjago stuff in TRU MV.

I think those designers in Lego are dying to have a military theme to show off their skill but due to TLG's policy they have to stick to 'safe' themes. Like the new SWAT van in the museum set where the SWAT team has no weapons at all rclxub.gif

Below is the tank I recently bought. It is from the Enlighten brand and while it is a step above the old one which I have it still have some issues like:
1) There is 1 missing piece, a 2x2 green plate
2) some bricks have sharp points due to the flares on the plastic which was not cut properly
3) The wheels on the mini quad bike came with 2 of them slightly smaller but the rim size is the same. Managed to force the rim into the tyre.
4) The minifigs face painting is still a step below Lego's
user posted image

Technic suspension system in a knock-off brand. You don't see this in any Lego set for that matter.
user posted image

The new one is really a step forward from the original one I have below. I bought it around 2009 if I recall.
user posted image

Other than that lots of printed pieces and the design is ok. Not as detailed or sleek as those Oxford tanks but the fact it has suspension surprised me since it is not advertised on the box.

Modular, Star Wars and Technic flagships are appreciating Lego sets where they go up in value over time. At one time the Batman sets were a hot commodity until TLG decided to re-release all of them as part of the Superheroes line. laugh.gif If you look at the price for MISB modular buildings the rate of increase is like better than stock market lol.

Of course there are some sets like the Maersk sets which feature the Maersk blue bricks which are high in value.

For the TMNT I wonder if it is going to end up like how TLG distribute the figures for LOTR and Super Heroes. Very very sien to collect all the figures such like Hulk and all the 4 hobbits since they are all distributed in so many sets. The worst is the Hulk one which I find it being in an overpriced set with lots of useless pieces and repetitive mini figs from other sets. sweat.gif

At least for LOTR some of the sets have alot of useful pieces.
