KUALA LUMPUR: No traffic summonses will be issued to road users under the new Automated Enforcement System (AES) during the Hari Raya holiday period, the Transport Ministry said.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the Government had not set a date to fully implement the system as the cameras were still being tested and certified.

“We'll announce later when the system will start and we'll ensure that there are enough signboards in the areas that are under camera surveillance.

“We hope the system will be fully-operational by year-end,” he told a press conference after launching the national Hari Raya celebrations traffic awareness campaign at the Integrated South-Bandar Tasik Selatan Transport Terminal yesterday.

It was reported that under the new system, 566 speed cameras and 265 traffic light cameras would be installed while 250 mobile cameras would be in use for places with inadequate infrastructure for setting up a camera.

Kong said some of the cameras had already been put in place in some “blackspot areas” but were only on trial mode.

On another matter, Kong said the national speed limit on federal and state roads would be reduced by 10kph during the Hari Raya period.

“The speed limit will now be 80kph for federal roads while those travelling on state roads will not be allowed to go more than 70kph. It will take effect beginning Aug 12 until Aug 26.

“The Road Transport Department will also impose restriction on heavy vehicles carrying goods from Aug 17 to 18 and on Aug 25 to 26,” said Kong.

Meanwhile, several people interviewed were all for the lowered speed limit during the holiday period and gave the thumbs up for the AES system.

Student Chye Hui, 20, said she welcomed the move to reduce the speed limit during the Hari Raya holiday period.

“It is a good start to help reduce the risk and number of accidents. I hope the Government will also deploy more traffic police to reduce congestion during the period,” she said.

Another student, Mohamed Shafiq Mustafa, 21, also lauded the move to lower the speed limit and also expressed hope that the AES system would be implemented soon.
