For this week we are advising you on High-Rised Properties. Many would think that my condominium is situated on 15th floor and there's no way i could get termites up here.

However the truth is Termites can go up as high as
possible on your structure to chew and munch your wood away.

Attached is a Picture of a Toilet Bowl at a Client's Place in Bangsar. Home is on the 5th Floor and the Termites have penetrated from the neighbor's home starting from the Ground Floor, 1st Floor, 2nd Floor and all the way to the 5th Floor and track starts in the Toilet.

The Question that might arise is why the toilet.
Termites Need only a Business Card sized crack to work their way up and they do use the Plumbing Lines to crawl up. It's because all pipes has ground access to the Earth.

That includes power-points since earth wire is grounded to the Earth.

but surely the termites need to feed on something. discarded papers? timber?

I'm currently staying on the top floor (15th floor) and facing termites problems too.
It is not surprise to get termites no matter how high you stay.
Worst, as Im on the top floor, they have lots of nest there!
(The wooden beams supporting the roof gives them daily buffet)

I have hired termites contractor on a few occasions but it was only a temporally solution & the termites will crawl back into my unit later from the roof. The only solution is to do baiting system but it is too costly for me as it involves the whole block's rooftop & don't think my condo management will be paying for that. Using baiting can kill the whole colony as the termites will bring the poison to their nest & queen.

So for temporally solution, I used BAYGON to spray them whenever I saw they are trying to get into my house.
Yes, Baygon insecticide (buy the one that kill cockroach one, not the one used for mosquito, with a straw-like nozzle. They have stronger killing power compared to those that kill mosquito. But make sure you wear a mask when spraying) The nozzle also helps me to spray into the cracks / holes at walls)

You can easily see if they are coming if you notice some brown, sandy trails starting to appear from ceiling.

I have termites at the bathroom too & some of them lives inside the tiles (there are space for them to travel as the cement under the tiles are 'combed' when tiles need to be installed). Some of them will feed on the wooden door frame & the wooden skirting at the adjoining room & even the parquet flooring.

Some of the info I get when asking why there's termites when I stay so high up:
* It could come from neighbor especially if the neighbor is a vacant house
* It could come from some furniture bought (second-hand, or some old furniture from relatives & friends)
* Termites can 'fly' into home (they looks like winged ants 'tai-sui-ngai')

Anyway, I will be shifting to my new home soon & I will be removing all the timber skirting there & do a prevention termite treatment before I move in

The Best Method is combination of Dusting + Baiting + Drilling..

For High Rised Buildings, the Dusting Has to be on Affected Areas on the Top Floor . Baiting + Drilling has to be done on The Ground Floor and the Soil has to be treated.

So mostly it would be the job of the Property Management to ensure that this Treatments are constantly done to not let your Toilets/Door Frames Get Infected with termites.

Lets say for Example if Apartment on the 14th Floor Gets Affected and the Owner pays RMXXXX amount of money. Do you know by doing so, you actually help all the OWNERS of your BUILDING and THE BUILDING ITSELF by eliminating that 1 COLONY!!!!! IT'S BECAUSE THE TERMITES ITSELF WILL CARRY THE CHEMICAL BACK TO THE NEST FROM THE TREATMENT DONE ON THAT FLOOR.

Please Do NOT Spray Other Insecticides as this will only make the situation worse.

Termites have a Feeding Behaviour whereby the eat the food bring back to the colony and feed others. Hence to elminate the colony, We Must Use The Existing Termites to bring the Chemical Back to the Nest and Wipe them OUT!!!!

what is "dusting"?

There is no such thing of highrise of high floor, then won't face termite problem.

Termites need to feed on something, they go to where they can find good 'foods' and shelter place.

Bad Wood species + good moisture.

Termite like certain wood and dislike some others, as far as I had experience.

You can place 2 species wood side by side.
One can infested with termite, the other one can be still intact.

Termite eat soft wood 1st then move to hardwood but not chengai… even un-treated chengai they won't "chew", karanci too

Dont waste money on bygon. Go to ace hardware or any hardware shop, buy termite poison. One of the commercial name is call termitox.

Just applied around ur roof or common area that got termite.

Do read the instruction. Key still is remove the main nest.

Dusting is a very ol'skoo method which is not used anymore. Experienced Termite companies would know bout this method.

It's a combination of three very very strong chemicals. Holes are puntured in Certain Termite Hot Spots such as Door Frame, Window Frame, Toilets, Plug Points, Wooden Skirting and Roof. Chemicals are like Talcum Powder and it's very fine and dangerous.

What happens is that Termites will come in contact with this Powder and it won't die Immediately (that's the Idea). Never Kill Termites Immediately. Infact they will carry this Powder back to the Colony and spread.

How Fast will the Chemical Spread and Eliminate the Colony...??
It takes only 2 weeks (14 Days) to wipe out 99% of the Termite Colony...


It's very unlike Liquid Chemicals....
Liquid Chemicals are only meant to be for Future Penetration of Termites Underground. To cure termites on the Spot.


Dusting + Baiting is the Method (14 Days)
Drilling to avoid Future Penetration of New Colony

Good Advice. Termites will eat not only Wood. But anything that is Cellulose Based. Can you imagine getting a Snicker Bar and Breaking into 2. What do you get inside...Pure Sugar (Energy) and Celullose.

So now think About this besides wood, what else is Cellulose Based....

Paper, Plaster, Wallpaper, Cardboxes, Books etc etc and the List Goes on.

Notice the Picture Frame. Take a Look at how did the termite actually Came From the Deco Light (SMALL MUDTUBE TRAIL) using the Ground Wire and Destroyed the Picture Frame
